Full list of 2024 Panthers free agents

The Panthers currently have 26 players slated for free agency in 2024.

Things have changed a bit since the last time we brought you this free agent list.

A few weeks back, the Carolina Panthers held on to a few of their own—re-signing tight end Stephen Sullivan and defensive linemen Nick Thurman LaBryan Ray to fresh deals.

So, let’s take an updated look at the team’s pending 2024 free agents.

Panthers place WR Derek Wright on practice squad injured reserve

The Panthers have placed WR Derek Wright on practice squad injured reserve.

The injuries for the Carolina Panthers have not been limited to just their active roster.

As first reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com on Friday afternoon, the team has placed wideout Derek Wright on practice squad injured reserve. The 25-year-old pass catcher sustained a knee injury during Thursday’s practice in the lead-up to this weekend’s contest against the Tennessee Titans.

Wright first joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of Utah State University last spring. He’d go on to spend the 2022 campaign on the team’s practice squad and sign a reserve/future deal with Carolina on Jan. 9, 2023.

Despite being named to the initial 53-man roster for this season, Wright—along with quarterback Matt Corral and linebacker Chandler Wooten—would be waived just a day later on Aug. 30. He and Wooten then returned as members of the practice squad the following afternoon.

The injury now leaves the group with 15 players.

Panthers’ initial 2023 practice squad

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ initial 16-man practice squad for the 2023 season:

The Carolina Panthers have officially rounded out their initial practice squad for the 2023 season—adding former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver and Frank Reich draft pick Dezmon Patmon on Tuesday.

So, let’s take a look at the entire (and complete) 16-man group:

Panthers add Derek Wright, Chandler Wooten to practice squad

WR Derek Wright and LB Chandler Wooten are back as members of the Panthers’ practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers might not have been able to keep Matt Corral around, but they were still able to bring back a pair of their own.

As announced on Thursday, the team has signed wide receiver Derek Wright and linebacker Chandler Wooten to their practice squad. The two, along with Corral, were waived on Wednesday to make room for the roster additions of offensive lineman Calvin Throckmorton, linebacker Claudin Cherelus and cornerback D’Shawn Jamison.

Wright initially joined the organization as an undrafted free agent out of Utah State University in the spring of 2022. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound pass catcher spent the entirety of his first pro season as a member of the practice squad.

Wooten was signed by the Panthers off the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad in the middle of last season. He appeared in nine games, primarily on special teams, totaling one tackle and a forced fumble.

The returns of Wright and Wooten bring the practice squad’s official count to 13 players.

Panthers waive Matt Corral, Derek Wright, Chandler Wooten

The Panthers are waiving 2022 third-round pick Matt Corral as well as WR Derek Wright and LB Chandler Wooten.

After constructing their initial 53-man roster, the Carolina Panthers made a few additions on Wednesday—three, to be exact. And unfortunately, that means they’ll have to be a trio of subtractions.

As first reported by Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer, that trio will consist of quarterback Matt Corral, wide receiver Derek Wright and linebacker Chandler Wooten.

So, yes, it turns out the Panthers will only carry two quarterbacks (Bryce Young and Andy Dalton) onto their active roster—at least for the time being. Oh, and yes, they also have themselves a sunk cost in Corral—who was a third-round pick in last year’s draft.

Carolina moved up to the 94th overall spot to select the Ole Miss standout, sending a 2023 third-rounder and a 2022 fourth-rounder (137th overall) to the New England Patriots. The Patriots, in turn, used those picks to take Western Kentucky quarterback Bailey Zappe in 2022 and Sacramento State linebacker Marte Marpu in 2023.

Corral has yet to take a regular-season snap in the NFL, as he missed the entirety of his rookie campaign with a Lisfranc fracture. In three appearances this preseason, he completed 28 of his 47 passing attempts for 249 yards and an interception.
