Giants signing Panthers 2020 draft pick Stantley Thomas-Oliver III

Per NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the Giants are signing former Panthers CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III.

Of the moves the New York Giants have made on Monday, we have a feeling that this one is going to fly under the radar just a bit. But luckily, we always have time for an old friend.

As first reported by Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the Giants are signing former Carolina Panthers cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III. This sliver of news slipped in below the shadow of Big Blue’s monster deal from this afternoon—a swap that sent Pro Bowl defensive lineman Leonard Williams to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick and 2025 fifth-round pick.

Alas, Thomas-Oliver III has found a new home five weeks after being released by the team that drafted him back in 2020. The Florida International University product was a seventh-round selection of the Panthers, one made with former head coach Matt Rhule leading the charge.

The six-foot, 190-pound defender appeared in 25 games for Carolina between 2020 ad 2022, totaling 17 combined tackles.

Panthers release CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III

The Panthers released CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III with an injury settlement on Friday.

The Carolina Panthers officially released cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III with an injury settlement on Friday. The 25-year-old defender was on the practice squad’s injured reserve list.

A holdover from the Matt Rhule regime, Thomas-Oliver was a seventh-round pick of the Panthers in the 2020 NFL draft. Prior to his selection, the Tallahassee, Fla. native spent four years at Florida International University—where he recorded 94 total tackles (seven for a loss), 2.0 sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles and nine passes defensed over 43 games.

Thomas-Oliver appeared in 10 games during his rookie campaign for Carolina, playing 108 of his 182 snaps on special teams. He saw a bit more work in his sophomore season, amassing 235 total snaps (215 on special teams) in 12 games.

The six-foot, 190-pounder then went on to play just three games in 2022 before being placed on injured reserve. He was cut during the team’s move to their initial 53-man roster this summer and later signed back as a member of the practice squad.

Panthers make signing of Tarik Cohen official on Wednesday

The Panthers have made the addition of former Bears RB and 2018 All-Pro Tarik Cohen official.

It’s officially comeback season for Tarik Cohen.

As announced on Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers have signed the former Chicago Bears running back to their practice squad. Reports of the addition first popped up last night, following the 28-year-old’s workout for the team just hours earlier.

Cohen, a Bunn, N.C. native and North Carolina A&T State University product, was a fourth-round pick of the Bears back in 2017. He’d go on to spend four seasons in the Windy City, including his standout 2018 campaign—where he earned First-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl nods for his work in the return game.

In addition to his prowess on special teams, the 5-foot6, 191-pounder also proved to be an offensive threat. Cohen notched 1,101 rushing yards, 1,575 receiving yards and 14 total touchdowns out of the backfield for the Bears.

He spent three of those seasons in Chicago under current Panthers special teams coach Chris Tabor. So if Carolina is still searching for a return man—and perhaps even a spark on offense—the electric ball carrier could have himself a strong advocate in his path back to an NFL field.

Cohen has not played in a regular-season game since Chicago’s Week 3 contest of the 2020 campaign, where he sustained ACL and MCL tears as well as a tibial plateau fracture while taking back a punt. He also tore his Achilles tendon during a workout session last spring.

The Panthers also added wide receiver Mike Strachan to the group. To make room for the additions, the team released running back Spencer Brown and placed cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III on practice squad injured reserve (hamstring).

Panthers’ initial 2023 practice squad

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ initial 16-man practice squad for the 2023 season:

The Carolina Panthers have officially rounded out their initial practice squad for the 2023 season—adding former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver and Frank Reich draft pick Dezmon Patmon on Tuesday.

So, let’s take a look at the entire (and complete) 16-man group:

Panthers announce 11 signings to initial 2023 practice squad

The Panthers signed the first 11 players to their initial 2023 practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers did plenty of work on Tuesday, making over 20 moves to get their once 90-man roster down to just 53. But, as always, their work was never done.

Next, on Wednesday, came the construction of the team’s initial practice squad. Here, as announced this afternoon, are the first 11 members of the group:

  • RB Spencer Brown
  • G Deonte Brown
  • G J.D. DiRenzo
  • G Justin McCray
  • DL Raequan Williams
  • DL Taylor Stallworth
  • OLB Eku Leota
  • OLB Jordan Thomas
  • CB Mark Milton
  • CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III
  • S Eric Rowe

With NFL teams allowed to carry 16 players per practice squad, the Panthers will have five more spots to fill in the upcoming days. So expect, especially after the extra cuts and maneuvering throughout the league on Wednesday, some more additions soon.

As for who those additions may be, Carolina could look to bring back the trio of players they just waived in quarterback Matt Corral, wide receiver Derek Wright and linebacker Chandler Wooten.

‘Madden NFL 24’ ratings for Panthers cornerbacks revealed

The “Madden NFL 24” ratings for the Panthers’ cornerbacks were rolled out on Thursday.

One of the biggest questions marks for the Carolina Panthers in 2023 is the cornerback position. Between injuries to their starters in Jaycee Horn and Donte Jackson and a lack of discernible depth, they don’t exactly boast the most trustworthy of groups in the NFL.

But, can you trust them on the sticks?

Here are the “Madden NFL 24” ratings for the Carolina corners:

Panthers place DT Derrick Brown on reserve/COVID-19 list

In addition to placing DT Derrick Brown on the reserve/COVID-19 list, the Panthers made a few adjustments ahead of their trip to Buffalo.

The Carolina Panthers, as of this very moment, have gone relatively unscathed through the latest wave of COVID-19 cases. But they will, unfortunately, be headed to Buffalo without one of their key defenders.

On Saturday afternoon, the team announced the placement of defensive tackle Derrick Brown on the reserve/COVID-19 list. In order for a player who has tested positive to return under the updated league protocol, he must be asymptomatic over a 24-hour period. This, obviously, takes the second-year lineman out of their Week 15 matchup with the Bills.

Brown had been coming off one of his best performances of the season in the 29-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, having totaled five tackles (two for a loss) and a pair of quarterback hits. The Panthers will go into Sunday with DaQuan Jones, Bravvion Roy and Phil Hoskins as their only defensive tackles.

Carolina, additionally, made a few adjustments in the lead-up to tomorrow’s tilt. Cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III has been activated while running back Reggie Bonnafon and wideout Willie Snead have been elevated from the practice squad.

Panthers activate G John Miller, place CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III on IR

On Saturday, the Panthers officially activated G John Miller while placing CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III on the IR.

The Carolina Panthers have to be feeling pretty good about their offensive right about now. (Boy, who ever thought anyone would be saying that in 2021?)

Anyway, amidst the unit playing its best football all season, the team announced on Saturday that right guard John Miller has been officially activated. Miller, who was designated to return earlier this week, is fresh off his three-week stint on the injured reserve.

In addition to the ankle injury that’s kept him out since Week 8, Miller missed the season opener after testing positive for COVID-19. Whether the seventh-year lineman reclaims his starting spot for the Week 11 matchup with the Washington Football Team is still, however, up in the air.

“He’s working on getting his wind back, getting himself back into playing shape.” head coach Matt Rhule said of Miller’s status during his Friday presser. “It’s only been one week for him of practicing.”

If Miller isn’t on the field to kick off Sunday’s tilt, Trent Scott is expected to take over those duties at right guard once again.

To make room for Miller, the Panthers placed cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III on the injured reserve with a toe issue. He was listed as questionable for the game after a limited practice on Friday’s injury report.

Panthers Week 11 injury report: One player questionable vs. Washington

The Panthers should be feeling good about themselves, both mentally and physically, heading into Sunday’s game against Washington.

After a rarity at practice on Thursday, in which every single available player was a full participant, the Carolina Panthers carried over their good health into today . . . for the most part.

Only two minor concerns popped up on the final injury report for the team’s Week 11 matchup with the Washington Football Team.

One of those was defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos, who was added on with an ankle issue. Luckily, his lack of game designation should keep any of that concern to a minimum.

In the second notable listing, cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver III was downgraded to a limited session on Friday following his two full days prior. He is now listed as questionable for the contest.

Here’s the full report:

Injury Wed. Thurs. Fri. Game status
DE Marquis Haynes Sr. Foot DNP Full Full
LB Frankie Luvu Shoulder Limited Full Full
CB Rashaan Melvin Hand Full Full Full
CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III Toe Full Full Limited Questionable
DE Yetur Gross-Matos Ankle Full
