Texas Football: Five players to watch vs. Texas Tech

Keep an eye on these Longhorns against Texas Tech on Saturday.

No. 22 Texas makes the trip to Lubbock this weekend for a matchup against Texas Tech.

Both teams enter with identical 2-1 records through three nonconference games. Texas dropped a nail biter to No. 1 Alabama in between two double-digit wins over UL Monroe and UTSA. Texas Tech is coming off a road loss to No. 12 NC State but won an impressive overtime game against a top 25 Houston squad in Week 2.

Texas’ offense put up historic numbers against the Red Raiders a season ago. The Longhorns ran Texas Tech out of DKR by a final score of 70-35.

New Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire has his team looking much improved early on this season. The new-look Red Raiders and rowdy environment in Lubbock will be no easy task for Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns.

Here is a look at five Longhorns to keep an eye on in Texas’ Big 12 opener vs. Texas Tech on Saturday.

Five players to watch in Texas’ season opener vs. UL Monroe

Keep an eye on these Longhorns on Saturday.

The 2022 season provides a fresh start for Steve Sarkisian and the Texas program. The Longhorns hope to leave 2021’s disappointments in the past with an improved year this fall.

Texas will have the look of a much different team in Saturday’s opener vs. UL Monroe. The Longhorns welcome many new faces to the roster via the transfer portal and high school recruiting ranks.

The Longhorns do return superstar running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Xavier Worthy back to lead the offense again this season. The dynamic duo established themselves as some of the best playmakers in the country a year ago.

The staff hopes the influx of talent, along with the returning studs can push Texas into the Big 12 Conference championship race.

Sarkisian feels good about the development of his team over the offseason and feels like the culture is at an “all-time high” in his Texas tenure.

Here are five Longhorns to keep an eye on in their Week 1 matchup with UL Monroe.

Three defensive players ready to breakout for Texas in 2022

Texas’ defense needs to show improvement this fall.

Texas enters the 2022 season looking for improved results on the defensive side of the ball.

Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski’s unit struggled to play consistent football much of last year. Texas finished outside the top 100 in both run defense and pass rush. Getting off the field on third downs was also a constant issue for the Longhorns.

Year No. 2 in Kwiatkowski’s system should prove beneficial for the Texas defense. Texas returns plenty of experience including the likes of super seniors De’Marvion Overshown, D’Shawn Jamison and Keondre Coburn. Those veterans are looking to end their career’s on a high note and help set Texas up well for the future.

The offseason addition of former TCU coach Gary Patterson was a major pull for Steve Sarkisian. Patterson is one of college football’s most accomplished defensive minds. He knows the Big 12 and is going to bring a fresh perspective to the coaching staff.

Here are three players ready to breakout for the Texas defense this fall.

Texas defensive players seem to be thriving in their roles

The Texas defense looks to be improved this year.

The Texas defense has seemingly impressed throughout camp. And while it’s difficult to grade the defensive line based on the unknowns on the other side, the improvement of every position group is noticeable.

While we have diverted our focus to offensive injuries and the quarterback battle, multiple defenders have been making plays.

D’Shawn Jamison has probably had the best camp in the secondary based on practice reports. Ryan Watts, Jamier Johnson and Jerrin Thompson have also been singled out for great play.

At linebacker, DeMarvion Overshown seems to have found the right role in the defense. Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey has emerged as the third linebacker that Texas needs.

The most important development is the emergence of Byron Murphy who could help this defensive line finally stand its ground up front.

Simply fixing the run defense would go a long way, but it appears the secondary has been opportunistic in camp by forcing turnovers.

Practice interceptions will not necessarily translate against offenses they don’t face every day. Nevertheless, it’s encouraging that defenders are catching interception opportunities.

Philosophical and positional changes could vastly improve the defense this season.

Texas Football: Six questions entering the next scrimmage

Hudson Card could be the likely starter at this point.

Steve Sarkisian’s team is preparing for the second scrimmage of fall camp, and so far there are more questions than answers.

The talent is there across the board, but nobody really knows what Texas will look like in 2022.

Perhaps the biggest question facing the team is who will start at quarterback. We will likely find out not long after Saturday’s scrimmage.

There have been a number of conflicting reports across media who cover the team. Additionally, coaches are not selling the same story either. Differences in opinion tell you how close the race has become.

Some say Card is in actuality the far more decisive and better operator of the offense to this point. We won’t know if that translates to the field until he takes off the no-contact jersey and faces a live rush.

That said, it’s time to accept the idea that barring a more mentally ready Quinn Ewers than coaches have seen, Card is the likely starter at this point.

Let’s look at six questions Texas could answer in the scrimmage.

LOOK: A few of Texas’ newcomers in the Burnt Orange

These guys are ready to help Texas get back in the right direction.

The offseason hype train for Texas football has already begun to take off.

Many around the program are ecstatic for the new season to arrive. A major reason many believe Texas will drastically improve from last season’s 5-7 record is the talented group to newcomers joining the program.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff brought in seven transfers to help revamp the roster in a quick way.

Texas boosted the offensive side of the ball with the addition of quarterback Quinn Ewers, wide receivers Isaiah Neyor, Agiye Hall and Tarique Milton, along with tight end Jahleel Billingsley. All of which should compete for playing time from the jump.

On the defense, Texas fill a few holes with veteran transfers. Defensive back Ryan Watts and linebacker Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey join a older defense ready to prove last season’s struggles are behind them.

Here is a look at Ewers, Neyor, Tucker-Doresy and Watts in their new Texas threads.

Which transfer players are the safest bets to contribute in 2022

This transfer class seems different than any group of transfers to Texas in recent memory.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was active in improving the team through the transfer portal in 2022. Adding transfer players is not a new practice, but this class seemed different than any group of transfers in recent memory.

First off, Sarkisian brought in a number of proven players. In fact, nearly every player has contributed significantly to their past team.

In past years, Texas fans bought into the transfer hype for more than one player who showed promise on the field. Tarik Black was lauded for his high school upside and early production, but it never translated to the field at Texas.

Heading into the 2022 season, let’s take a look at which players you can expect to contribute immediately on the Forty Acres, on a scale of 1-10.

Texas’ DeMarvion Overshown is getting more looks at EDGE

DeMarvion Overshown could be the answer to Texas’ pass rush issues.

Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown is back for one final season with the Longhorns. The fifth-year senior is planning on playing a multitude of roles for the Texas defense in 2022.

One spot where Overshown could provide a spark is at the EDGE position. The Longhorns struggled to create duress on opposing quarterbacks during the 2021 campaign. Texas ranked near the bottom of the Big 12 in both sacks and quarterback pressures.

Fellow pass rusher Ovie Oghoufo has been providing Overshown some tips about the position change.

Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski can get creative with the ways he dials up his defensive front. Giving Overshown more time at EDGE allows junior Jaylan Ford and James Madison transfer Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey more opportunity at linebacker. Two guys who Overshown mentioned as stand-out players during Big 12 Media Days.

Five summer additions ready to make an impact for Texas football in 2022

These guys have the chance to make an early impact this fall.

Texas did a masterful job this offseason making upgrades to the roster. Steve Sarkisian and his coaching staff have utilized both the transfer portal and the high school ranks to add some key pieces to the program.

We got a taste of what some of the early enrollees could do in the spring game as the transfer group of Quinn Ewers, Isaiah Neyor, Jahleel Billingsley and Ryan Watts all flashed playmaking ability. Freshman defensive lineman Justice Finkley and running back Jaydon Blue earned plenty of praise from Sark throughout spring ball as well.

The remaining group of the newcomers have arrived and are eager for the start of summer workouts. Transfer pickups Agiye Hall, Tarique Milton and Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey join the No. 5 ranked recruiting class in the 2022 cycle. The final group of fresh faces could be what Texas is missing to compete for a Big 12 title this season.

Here is a list of five summer additions ready to make an early impact for the Longhorns in 2022.

An updated look at Texas’ LB depth chart

Texas can feel more comfortable with its linebacker depth after the addition of Diamonte Tucker-Dorsey.

Texas made another big splash in the transfer portal with the addition of James Madison linebacker Diamontae Tucker-Dorsey.

Tucker-Dorsey chose the Longhorns after picking up transfer offers from the likes of Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Auburn and UCF. Texas was able to get him to campus for a visit earlier this week and closed the deal on Friday.

The FCS All-American fills a major need in the Texas linebacker room that struggled much of the 2021 season. Tucker-Dorsey has a knack for being around the football. He racked up 116 tackles, nine tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and four takeaways for the Dukes last season.

Expect Tucker-Dorsey to push for playing time as soon as he steps foot on campus. DeMarvion Overshown returns with hopes to end his collegiate career with a bang. Jaylan Ford and David Gbenda showed some flashes last season, but need to figure out more consistency.

Here is an updated look at Texas’ linebacker depth chart with Tucker-Dorsey included.
