Washington defeats Texas, 37-31

A memorable season comes to an end as Texas falls to Washington by six points.

The Washington Huskies remain undefeated. The Huskies defeated the Texas Longhorns, 37-31.

Washington outplayed and outcoached the Texas, yet somehow the Longhorns managed to stay in the game.

The Huskies did their best to take Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers out of the game, taking the RPO and intermediate game away and having the Longhorns passing attack out of sorts.

Ewers started the game 10-for-20 as Washington seemingly took away every available receiving option. Yet after a 9-for-10 stretch for Ewers and despite being significantly out-gained offensively, Texas cut the Washington lead to 34-28.

Washington quarterback Michael Penix, who feasted on the Texas defense all night, promptly drove his team down for a field goal to put the game out of reach, 37-28.

Texas rallied back within striking distance down 37-31, but was unable to cash in on its second chances.

The turnover battle was the deciding factor. Both Texas running backs Jaydon Blue and CJ Baxter fumbled on positive runs while the Huskies played mostly clean football.

Credit Washington for a tremendous gameplan and near perfect execution on offense and defense. The Longhorns finish their best season since 2009 with a 12-2 record and reason for national title optimism in 2024 should Ewers return.

Texas is tied up with Washington at the half, 21-21

Texas tied the game with a late drive.

Washington quarterback and Heisman finalist Michael Penix has cooked the Texas Longhorns’ secondary in the first two quarters. The Huskies have been able to pass the ball at will, with the Longhorns not being able to stop them. Penix has 255 yards and one touchdown on 11 completions.

The Longhorns’ run defense has stood the test against Washington’s attempts, allowing just 51 yards and a huge fourth down stop deep into Texas territory.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers and the passing game have had a tough time getting things going, throwing for 97 yards. CJ Baxter and Jaydon Blue have been phenomenal, along with Texas’ offensive line in running the ball against Washington’s shaky defense, combining for 116 yards and three touchdowns in the first half.

A late drive tied the game at 21 a piece, with Ewers scrambling and putting the Longhorns in prime position to punch it in for their third rushing touchdown of the night.

The Longhorns need to run the ball more to keep Penix off the field and run out the clock. They must stay disciplined and avoid costly penalties to stay in the game.

WATCH: The mission continues for Texas football against Washington

The Texas Longhorns cross into uncharted waters against Washington in the College Football Playoff.

We have arrived to Sugar Bowl game day. Texas fans have waited for the day for nearly a month. College football fans have waited for the game for nearly a year. It’s time for the College Football Playoff.

The playoff is uncharted territory for the Texas football program. It is the first time the team has played in the four-team tournament since its inception in 2014.

Texas football released a hype video to commemorate the big moment and highlight the opportunity ahead for the team. With a win, the Longhorns move to play the national title game in their own backyard in Houston. What lies ahead for the team overshadows what it has already accomplished.

The 2023 season is a success for Texas. The team ran Alabama out of its own building in Week 2 before going 12-1 and winning the Big 12 championship. But Texas isn’t as interested in what it did in the past as what it could do moving forward.

The journey for Texas has been successful, but the mission isn’t finished. The team will look to advance one game further with a win over Washington.

College GameDay predicts Texas vs. Washington

The GameDay crew likes Washington to beat Texas.

College GameDay likes the Washington Huskies to defeat the Texas Longhorns in the College Football Playoff semifinal. Three of the four hosts predicted Texas to lose in the Sugar Bowl.

It’s reasonable to take the higher seed. Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee and Kirk Herbstreit leaned to the No. 2 Washington Huskies securing the win.

In Washington’s favor is a better and more experienced quarterback in Michael Penix. And while we think highly of Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers it’s difficult to overlook the production of his counterpart in addition to the Washington gunslinger’s experience edge.

If Texas loses to Washington it likely won’t be for lack of offense for the Longhorns. The Huskies’ No. 120 pass defense concedes a whole lot this season. They will need to play uncharacteristically well to slow the Texas passing attack.

Washington’s potent offense will be what wins the game on Monday if it ends up victorious.

Coverage for the game begins at 7:45 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Five keys to the game in Sugar Bowl between Texas and Washington

We look at what Texas needs to do to beat Washington.

We are one day away from Texas vs. Washington. It is the biggest game for the Longhorns since they played for a national title in 2009.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian leads his team into the College Football Playoff semifinal playing its best football of the year. Over the last two matchups, the Longhorns outscored its two opponents in Texas Tech and Oklahoma State by a combined 106-28.

On the other side of the field is a Washington Huskies team that has won three in a row by the skin of its teeth. The Huskies have won each of their last three games by three points or less.

There’s been a month without play for both teams, so it’s uncertain what they will look like after a week of preparation. You can count on each side aiming to bring its best football.

Let’s look at our keys to the game.
