College Fantasy Draft: Tom Herman and the Longhorns walk away with help on defense

In 247Sports’ most recent article they posed an idea of a college fantasy draft. In this scenario the Texas Longhorns walk away with a LBer.

If you are an avid football fan, it is likely that you play fantasy football. It isn’t just a NFL game anymore as some sites offer a college football fantasy league. Many fans are putting their draft parties together, putting a board together much like a NFL team is doing and prove they have the superior football mind against friends and colleagues. So what about a college football fantasy draft?

What if the contenders in the remaining Power Five conferences got their shot at drafting a player out of the Big Ten or Pac-12 Conference? Throw the transfer portal out the window for just a moment. That is what 247Sports’ staff did. In this scenario the Longhorns received the number 12 selection to try and improve their team. So do they go offense and add to their wide receiver corps? Or do they add to their defense in an attempt to slow down some high powered offenses?

The Longhorns select: Cameron McGrone, Linebacker from Michigan

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

No shock will this selection as the Longhorns have been on the hunt for linebacker help. Recently they were among the three teams vying for the commitment from Arizona transfer linebacker Tony Fields II. In this scenario from Barton Simmons, the Longhorns get their man in McGrone.

Texas needs a fix at defense and has turned to new coordinator Chris Ash for answers. There’s no denying the talent in the secondary and Joseph Ossai is expected to emerge as one of the best pass rushers in the country. It’s the linebacker position where the Longhorns need to find consistency. Cameron McGrone, a former five-star in the Top247 rankings, was poised to have a breakout fall this season at Michigan and the feeling here is that whenever we see him on the field again, he’ll quickly assert himself as one of the best linebackers in the country. That’s the kind of talent that would make Ash sleep much easier in his first year

2021 Recruiting Profile: Denton Ryan athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders

Top rated 2021 recruit for the Texas Longhorns Ja’Tavion Sanders. Will Sanders be the next ‘Jack’ for the Longhorns defense?

While Ja’Tavion Sanders is both a pass catcher and pass rusher, he is projected as a quarterback hunter for the Longhorns. Once Joseph Ossai moves on to the NFL, look for Sanders to try and take up the mantle as the “Jack” over the next several years for Texas.

Sanders was the first player to commit in the 2021 recruiting class and he is also the highest-rated one. He gives the Longhorns their second-straight commitment from a 247Sports composite five-star after the team signed Alfred Collins in the last cycle.

Analysis

Power Five-caliber recruit on both sides of the ball as an edge defender and flex tight end. Good height with enough frame space to add some bulk. Flashes straight-line athleticism to run by much smaller players, including as a wideout in the passing game. Quick off the line when playing in a three-point stance. Not just an edge-bender but a corner-turner when rushing the passer. Strong tackler. High-motor player who’s active and engaged against the run. Shows encouraging hands-catching ability for a two-way player with ample defensive experience. Dangerous against the screen pass because of that. Could potentially fit multiple defensive schemes. Strong junior campaign on offense reinvigorated case for long-term offensive positional home. Great ball skills. Strong production when considering two-way duties against good competition. Will need to expand pass-rushing repertoire if playing off the edge in college. Relies on athleticism to beat high school OT’s. If playing tight end, will need to hone technique as a blocker in the box as he’s often asked to play as a wideout, rather than an in-line TE or H-back. Very intriguing prospect thanks to physical potential, athleticism, and playmaking ability on both sides of the ball. Possesses long-term early-round NFL Draft ceiling. – Gabe Brooks 247Sports

Report: Longhorns’ Myron Warren no longer in transfer portal

According to a report from 247Sports, Texas redshirt freshman defensive lineman Myron Warren has removed himself from the transfer portal.

It was only a few days ago that Texas Longhorns defensive lineman Myron Warren put his name into the transfer portal. Texas has seen this occur a few times this offseason with Anthony Cook and Juwan Mitchell. Much like the previous two cases it appears that Warren has removed his name from the portal and will continue his playing career in Austin per 247Sports.

According to Chip Brown of Horns247, Warren removed himself on Monday morning.

According to a 247Sports check of the transfer portal, Warren’s name was removed shortly after 10 am CT on Monday.

Warren came to Austin as part of the Longhorns’ 2019 class and did not play last season. He ranked as the No. 289 overall player in the 247Sports Composite that cycle. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound Louisiana native is expected to be a part of the Longhorns’ two-deep this season as a redshirt freshman, potentially backing up defensive tackle Ta’Quon Graham.

The redshirt freshman is looking to get into the mix among the defensive line now headed up by new defensive coordinator Chris Ash. The report also stats that Warren could be in the mix at nose tackle as a backup for Keondre Coburn.

Despite rumors swirling around the possible cancellation of the college football season, the Longhorns are in the midst of fall camp. Provided the season continues as planned they will open up the year hosting Texas-El Paso on September 12th at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The kickoff time has yet to be announced. As the Big 12 meeting draws near, we hope to have some finality on all these questions.

Caden Sterns: ‘Worked way too hard for the season to be cancelled’

Texas Longhorns junior safety Caden Sterns went to Twitter to have his voice heard. He feels like he worked too hard for this.

Much like many of the fans are expressing on social media with the reports of a cancelled season, the players are just as upset. Much like Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, other players are taking to Twitter to get their voice heard. Players much like Lawrence feel as if they would be better off on campus around their team than at home. One reason was that often times these athletes are in better situations than home. Football is their way to escape a world and they are given a better opportunity.

One Texas Longhorn has made his voice known. Caden Sterns is no stranger to letting his voice be heard. He took to Twitter shortly after Lawrence to let his frustrations be known.

Caden joined his teammates on Friday in the first day of fall camp as they tried to get ready for the upcoming season. Under new defensive coordinator Chris Ash there was much to be optimistic about. Ash’s defense was going to focus on pressure and taking the ball away. Sterns was pretty good at taking the ball from offenses in his freshman season. It is a craft he was working on early in camp.

After a down year in 2019, Sterns seemed poised to become the ballhawk he was in 2018. He was named Freshman All-American for his efforts and led the team in interceptions that year with four. It is unclear at this moment whether or not the Big 12 Conference and Bob Bowlsby will follow the lead of the Big Ten.

All we know is the players want to do what they do best, play the game they love.

What USA TODAY says about Texas’ No. 14 ranking in Amway Coaches Poll

What did USA TODAY Sports have to say about the Texas Longhorns being ranked in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll?

Fall camp is finally here and with that it feels like Texas Longhorns football is so close we can almost taste it. One of the annual events of the preseason are the rankings. Media and fans alike love to pick apart the rankings with how they feel each college football team should be ranked. Texas came in 14th in the initial Amway Coaches Poll.

The first reaction by many is of course, who is overrated? According to Paul Myerburg, one of those teams would in fact be the Longhorns. Sure one could point to what the Longhorns lost and claim that they are overrated but they return their senior quarterback and key pieces around him. Factor in the new coordinators in Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash and that gives promise. Not to mention they added five-star recruits on both sides of the ball.

What USA TODAY Sports says about the Longhorns outlook

Daniel Dunn-USA TODAY Sports

The USA TODAY Sports staff recently released their outlook on every one of the top 25 teams, they make valid points for the Longhorns.

It’s the question asked, mostly facetiously now, every August: Is Texas back? After a step back – the wrong way, in this sense — in 2019 compared to a Sugar Bowl win the season before, Tom Herman shook things up this offseason by firing his offensive and defensive coordinator, meaning Longhorns players are learning new schemes on both sides of the ball. QB Sam Ehlinger has thrown more yards than any other Power Five quarterback in the last two years, and there’s no shortage of receiving talent for him to target. LB Joseph Ossai returns after leading the team with 90 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. A trip to the Big 12 title game will be expected or pressure will mount on Herman.

The Longhorns head coach Tom Herman isn’t in the hot seat yet but if he fumbles the season (provided they play) then it will heat up.
