WATCH: Highlight plays shed light on Texas breakout players for 2023

Savion Red’s beast stiff arm, Quinn Ewers’ dime to Ja’Tavion Sanders and more.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has his team looking sharp this spring. That is, if this highlight reel is any indication.

There’s a great deal to unpack with a handful of players flashing on the field. Upperclassmen linebacker David Gbenda, wide receiver Casey Cain and backup quarterback Maalik Murphy see plenty of camera time in the featured reels. It gives credence to the notion that Casey Cain brings some of his best football in practices.

The three biggest takeaways for me involve three players who could have breakout seasons in 2023. First, Quinn Ewers looks incredibly sharp in the limited action we’re able to watch. Ewers makes an effortless throw to Ja’Tavion Sanders on the run, hitting Sanders on a corner route in stride.

The second realization is that edge rusher Barryn Sorrell is huge. Sorrell looks like the freshman iteration of Texas defensive tackle Alfred Collins.

The most enlightening highlight sees Texas running back Savion Red displacing second year edge Justice Finkley with a powerful stiff arm. Short as it may be, the highlight gives an idea of why the team thinks so highly of Red heading into the season.

Studs and duds from Texas’ loss to Washington in the Alamo Bowl

Quinn Ewers and Terrance Brooks were bright spots in Texas’ loss.

No. 21 Texas fell short to No. 12 Washington in the 2022 Alamo Bowl. The Huskies held control of the game from start to finish, holding on to a 27-20 victory.

The Longhorns’ rushing attack was non-existent without Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson in the backfield. Texas ran the ball 18 times for just 51 yards on a 2.8 yards per carry pace.

Quinn Ewers played a solid game despite the struggles in the run game. He looked much more comfortable with the offense, especially in the second half. However, a few huge drops by Xavier Worthy kept Texas from really getting back in the game.

Third downs gave Texas’ defense tons of trouble all night. Washington converted 11-20 third downs, consistently killing Texas with long, methodical drives.

Texas finishes the season with an improved 8-5 record, leaving much to be desired on the table. All five of the Horns’ losses came by one possession.

Here is a look at the studs and duds from Texas’ season-ending loss at the hands of Washington.

Studs and duds from Texas’ 24-21 victory over Iowa State

We saw many great and not-so-great performances from the Longhorns in this matchup.

Steve Sarkisian has his Longhorns building some serious momentum. Texas is winners of three in a row as they edged out Iowa State 24-21 to improve to 5-2 for the 2022 season.

Texas held on to win the back-and-forth battle, capping off the contest by forcing a fumble on Iowa State’s final drive. Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers hit Xavier Worthy for a touchdown on a fourth down and goal that eventually proved to be the game-winner.

It was a bit of a sluggish performance for Texas on both sides of the ball. The Horns let the 16-point underdog Cyclones stick around until the final minute.

Steve Sarkisian was pleased his team came out on top. He believes winning a close call is evidence Texas is headed in the right direction.

Horns Up: Seven Texas players trending up after Saturday’s game

Texas is back in the win column after Saturday’s win.

Texas started its 2022 season with a 52-10 win over the ULM Warhawks. Despite some sloppiness and struggles in different phases, the Longhorns provided a solid performance overall.

Several Texas players emerged as game changers Saturday. Barryn Sorrell had perhaps the biggest impact, accounting for two sacks. If you were wondering where Texas would get its pass rush this year, Sorrell’s two-sack performance may have given you your answer.

Keondre Coburn also had a good night, earning a sack of his own. The defensive line was noticeably more disruptive and explosive which could pay dividends this year.

Several freshman made an immediate contribution on Saturday also. Cole Hutson frequently unlocked early runs for Bijan Robinson by sealing off defenders. Justice Finkley had a good play early, both setting the edge and making an impressive tackle. Kelvin Banks certainly looked like he belonged, while Jaylon Guilbeau looked like a seasoned veteran.

Steve Sarkisian did a solid job involving multiple players offensively. Casey Cain featured his explosiveness, but the biggest news among skill players was the arrival of Ja’Tavion Sanders. Sanders’ performance led all receivers and could be the beginning of a special connection with Quinn Ewers.

Here’s a look at Texas players’ whose stock is rising following Saturday’s game.

Four Texas Longhorns to look out for this college football season

These Longhorns could be rising stars in 2022.

There is plenty of hype surrounding Texas when it comes to the 2022 college football season, but there are players that may be getting a tad overlooked.

Everyone is well aware of the likes of Quinn Ewers, Bijan Robinson, Xavier Worthy, and DeMarvion Overshown. However, there are a handful of Longhorns that can make an impact that are not getting talked about nearly enough.

Whether these players may have already played a significant role in years past, or are looking to carve out a spot to do so for the first time in 2022, there will certainly be some commonly overlooked names being said this year.

Steve Sarkisian and his staff are now in year two, and not only does that mean the fan base has higher expectations considering the first year went so poorly, but it also means the players on the roster have had consistency for the first time in a couple years. This allows for players to grow in the system and blossom into stars.

Here are a few players that have a great chance of contributing in the 2022 season whether it be as a starter or a role player.

WATCH: Texas WR Casey Cain hauls in one-handed grab during spring practice

Cain seems to be a bright spot of Texas’ spring practices thus far.

According to reports from Inside Texas and Horns247, redshirt freshman wide receiver Casey Cain has made several plays throughout spring practices up to this point.

It’s surely a welcoming surprise, as head coach Steve Sarkisian recently noted that the Longhorns lack depth at the position. Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington are locks to start when healthy, and Isaiah Neyor and Marcus Washington are solid threats on the outside.

Aside from that, someone needs to step up. Troy Omeire will miss this spring as he continues to recover from knee surgery, and 2022 signee Brenen Thompson won’t arrive on campus until the fall. This allows Cain to step up and prove his worth.

On Sunday, Texas released a highlight video from Saturday’s practice where Cain hauled in a spectacular one-handed grab from quarterback Quinn Ewers.

There was also another video circulating on social media where Cain got open in the middle of the field for a deep reception from quarterback Hudson Card.

Cain seems to have great size and a fantastic catch radius. If he continues to consistently make plays, he’ll work his way up the depth chart and receive significant playing time moving forward.

Five bold predictions for Texas’ Week 5 game against TCU

Time to be BOLD!

The Longhorns have picked up momentum after dropping a 70-burger on Texas Tech last week, but they will have to show up in a big way in order to beat TCU in Week 5.

It seems as if whenever Texas plays a great game one week, they have major issues of replicating the success the following week. If the Longhorns can string together a good performance against TCU, they would have three consecutive wins under their belt and it will likely have them jump back into the AP Top 25.

This game is a test of how much the team has improved as a whole, but also how far the new culture under Steve Sarkisian has come. TCU has dominated the Longhorns as of late, winning seven of the last nine matchups. The Horned Frogs are also coming off a very heated loss to SMU that has Gary Patterson fuming over a flag planting injury and the rights to his song.

If Texas comes in and performs as well they have been on offense, while being able to contain Max Duggan and Zach Evans on defense, this game could be the end of TCU’s win streak over Texas.

Last week’s bold predictions were a raging success, let’s see if I can keep my hot streak alive.
