Who are the Big 12 Conference’s early Heisman Trophy candidates?

Looking around the Big 12 Conference at the top Heisman Trophy candidates

The Big 12 Conference is still months away from kicking off the 2021 college football season. The Oklahoma Sooners viewed as the favorites once again, for good reason. Until a team can knock them off, the Crimson and Cream are the team to beat.

Another notable accomplishment that experts are looking at involves the Heisman Memorial Trophy, who are the top contenders? Over the last four years, the Sooners have produced two winners and one finalist at the quarterback position.

For that reason alone, the Sooners have the top player on most early candidates lists with quarterback Spencer Rattler.

Who else in the conference could be on the list? Betting odds provided by BetMGM.

Iowa State wins the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl

CFN Prediction: Oregon 26, Iowa State 24

5. The Big 12 delivered in a big, big way

5-0 is 5-0.

You play the team in front of you, it’s not your fault if the other team has issues, and all of those other talking points. It’s all about the scoreboard and the record.

Yes, the Big 12 was favored in all five of the games. Yes, Army was one of those games, a meh Colorado was another, D’Eriq King suffered a knee injury in one, and Florida was missing way too many players in another.

A win is a win is a win, but it’s possible to slightly yuck the Big 12’s yum on a lot of this.

Not on Iowa State’s win in the Fiesta Bowl. It just beat the Pac-12 Champion.

This was a huge win for the Cyclones – more on this later, but it might be the biggest win ever – and it was the one the Big 12 should chirp about more than any of the others.

Oklahoma might have been jaw-dropping great, and Oklahoma State, West Virginia and Texas did what they were supposed to do, but Iowa State was dealing with a very talented, very active Oregon team that looked like it was about to put it all together.

The Ducks still have tremendous talent, and the sky’s the limit going into next year, but …

Texas Longhorns vs Iowa State: Running Backs Tale of the Tape

The Texas Longhorns defense will be tested in the run game against Breece Hall. Can this team be the first to slow him down?

The Texas Longhorns defense and Chris Ash are really going to be tested on Friday. With game-planning for the Cyclones, comes getting ready for the top running back in the Big 12 Conference. Breece Hall has been running through every defense that he has come across this season. Iowa State has been one of the more consistent running teams in college football this year.

The Longhorns have been on the other side, outside of Sam Ehlinger’s runs this year Texas hasn’t been consistent enough. With how Tom Herman’s offenses have operated the last three seasons. The team is ranked fifth in the Big 12 with 160.5 rushing yards per game in conference play.

The Iowa State defense allows just 104 yards per game and six total touchdowns. That ranks second in the conference in both. In conference play that number drops to 102 and five. Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson will be tested, awaiting to hear if Keaontay Ingram will be available this week.

In conference play, he has rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown in every game. Hall has scored at least two touchdowns in each of the last three games. Can Texas bottle up Hall and force Brock Purdy to throw the ball?

Top five running backs Texas will face in 2020

To truly be considered an elite offense in the Big 12, you also need a great ground game. Here are the top five RBs Texas will face in 2020:

After looking at the top five quarterbacks the Longhorns will play in 2020, we move on to the running game. Five out of the top six leading rushers in the Big 12 are returning next season, with Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts leaving for the NFL.

While Texas’ Keaontay Johnson cannot make the list, he should be considered up there atop the Big 12 in running backs. Despite dealing with injuries and the surprise help of Roschon Johnson, Ingram finished sixth in the conference.

For the rest of the pack, this will not be their first time running over, through, and around defenses on a week to week basis. To truly be considered an elite offense in the Big 12, you also need a great ground game.
