Michigan State football DE transfer Bai Jobe chooses Kansas

Former MSU DE Bai Jobe picks Kansas over Mississippi State and UTSA

Michigan State lost defensive end Bai Jobe to the transfer portal during the spring portal window, much to the dismay of the fanbase. Jobe was a former top-75, 4-star recruit out of Oklahoma in the 2023 recruiting class. Once a crown jewel, now off to the transfer portal.

Jobe has now found his landing spot, making a decision between Kansas, Mississippi State and UTSA. He chose the Jayhawks.

Jobe did not record any playing time during his time at MSU.

Why Bai Jobe and Michigan State football parting ways isn’t a big deal

OPINION: Bai Jobe and Michigan State’s split makes sense for both sides

Bai Jobe made the decision to transfer from Michigan State football earlier this week, ending the former top-75 prospects time in East Lansing. While disappointing for fans, it is not the end of the world for the new staff coming into Michigan State.

Jobe, for one, was not their blue chip recruit. He committed to a different staff in East Lansing and there were fresh relationships that have had to of been established. If this was Smith and co.’s recruit, this is a different story.

Further, Jobe, as many knew, needed a ton of work and development to ever see the field in the green and white. Not that this is a problem, but the want to play early in his career wasn’t a viable option, and the new staff told him that.

Finally, the scheme fit was not there with Joe Rossi’s defense and a guy like Jobe. Within the 4-2-5/3-3-5 hybrid the Spartans will play, one defensive end will be more of a OLB/DE hybrid, that will need pass coverage skills. Jobe does not have that. The other DE will need to be strong in the run game, provided an anchoring support to his defensive linemates. Jobe does not have that skill.

Ultimately, Jobe would have had a ceiling of being a third down pass rush specialist, and that is something he may be very good at one day, but for the desire to further his career, he needed the change of sceneray.

For MSU, while losing a highly touted prospect looks bad on surface, this decision is perfectly okay, as the scheme fit was not there, and it was not their recruit, thus making it a lot easier to swallow.

Michigan State football second year EDGE rusher enters NCAA transfer portal

A former high-profile recruit for MSU has entered the transfer portal:

One of the top recruits Michigan State football was able to land during the Mel Tucker era has entered the NCAA transfer portal. On Wednesday,  EDGE rusher Bai Jobe entered the portal.

Jobe was the No. 55 ranked player in the 2023 class and was considered a big recruiting win for the previous staff.

With a lot of scheme changes and a need for pass rushers who can also stop the run, Jobe’s time appears to have run out at MSU.

MSU DE Bai Jobe makes 247Sports’ ‘The Next Wave’ impactful true freshmen list

Chris Hummer of 247Sports expects incoming highly-rated freshman Bai Jobe to have an instant impact this upcoming season

Chris Hummer of 247Sports expects incoming highly-rated freshman Bai Jobe to have an instant impact this upcoming season.

Hummer put together a list of 100 true freshmen that will have an impact on the 2023 college football season, and Jobe to no surprise made the cut. Jobe was a massive recruit win for Mel Tucker and the Spartans, with Jobe ranking as the No. 55 overall prospect in the class.

Here’s a little bit of what Hummer had to say about Jobe:

There really isn’t an easy path to the field for anyone in Michigan State’s 2023 class, but I’d be remiss not to at least mention Jobe. The Spartans’ top signee — and someone who dominated at the All American Bowl in San Antonio — Jobe has the tools to be an impact situational pass rusher.

Top five true freshman edge rushers in the Big Ten for 2023

Top five true freshman edge rushers in the Big Ten for 2023 #GoBucks

It is always fun to look at recruiting rankings. The recruiting landscape receives more coverage every year because recruiting is a very important aspect of building a program. Still, it is important to remember these players and prospects are not defined by these rankings.

I was diving into the most recent class and trying to figure out which future Buckeye is going to shine brightest and fastest but noticed the Big Ten as a whole was pretty interesting recruiting-wise this cycle. We already dived into the quarterbacksrunning backswide receiverstight ends, offensive tackles and interior offensive linemen. Now, we dive into the top edge rushers.

Sooners four-star DL target Xadavien Sims commits to Oregon over Oklahoma

Four-star defensive line target of the Oklahoma Sooners, Xadavien Sims, committed to Oregon on Saturday.

Oklahoma and Oregon have been doing battle for recruits quite often lately. In the latest round of head-to-head matches on the recruiting trail, the Oregon Ducks prevailed.

Four-star defensive lineman and one of the top players in Oklahoma, Xadavien Sims, committed to Oregon over Oklahoma, TCU, Vanderbilt, and Michigan State. The announcement came live at the C4Sports facility where he and there to Texarkana prospects train, including 2025 QB commit Kevin Sperry. Sims is a consensus four-star prospect and is the No. 121 overall prospect, according to 247Sports.

While it was initially thought that this battle would be an Oklahoma and Michigan State battle, Oregon entered the fray and made up significant ground. Dan Lanning’s time as the defensive coordinator at Georgia has helped give him and the Oregon defensive staff a significant boost amongst defensive recruits.

And yet, while Michigan State owned 100 percent of the crystal balls for Sims earlier this week on 247Sports, the tide shifted quickly in Oregon’s favor. A few Oklahoma predictions came in, and they seemed to be the prevailing choice but a mid-week crystal ball from national director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong, signaled that the Oregon smoke was more than just smoke.

Oregon was the last Power Five school to offer him in the winter, but they hit the ground running to catch up to Oklahoma and Michigan State. Sims’ commitment will sting for the Sooners. They’ve now lost one of the best players in the state to an out-of-state school in consecutive years. Four-star EDGE Bai Jobe committed and signed with Michigan State last year.

However, it won’t discourage the Sooners as they are still heavily in the mix for four or five other talented defensive linemen for the 2024 recruiting cycle. At the moment, they’re the favorites to land two of the best prospects in the nation, five-star defensive linemen David Stone and Williams Nwaneri. Oklahoma’s also heavily in the mix for four-star defensive linemen Joseph Jonah-Ajonye and Nigel Smith.

This is the third major recruiting battle the Sooners and the Ducks have had in the last two cycles. Oklahoma won out in the Peyton Bowen sweepstakes, flipping the five-star safety after Bowen flipped his commitment from Notre Dame to Oregon. The Ducks pulled off the flip of four-star wide receiver prospect Ashton Cozart.
