2023 Cardinals Defensive Player of the Year: LB Kyzir White

White gets the edge over Jalen Thompson in this year’s 2023 player awards.

The Arizona Cardinals’ 2023 season is over and now we can look back at player and team performance. We are at the part of the offseason where awards and honors are beginning to be doled out.

We do the same for the Cardinals and their 2023 season.

Running back James Conner was the team’s MVP this season.

The team’s defensive player of the year isn’t as cut-and-dried.

In a close decision, it is linebacker Kyzir White, edging safety Jalen Thompson.

White set the tone for Arizona’s defense in 2023. Signed as a free agent last offseason and thrust into the “mike” linebacker role for the first time in his career, he was productive.

A torn biceps injury ended his season prematurely, but he still piled up stats.

Despite missing the final six games of the season, he still led the team with 90 tackles and nine tackles for loss.

He added a paid of sacks, an interception and three pass breakups. His physicality was noticed from the very first game.

Thompson had a fine season with 78 tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack, four interceptions, nine pass breakups and a forced fumble.

Thompson did more statistically across the board in 15 games but White gets the edge.

10 Michigan State football players Jonathan Smith needs to retain

10 current MSU players Jonathan Smith should heavily focus on retaining:

The first thing on the list for Jonathan Smith upon arriving to East Lansing will be meeting with the current roster, and recruiting the current roster to stick around and not hit the transfer portal.

No one is denying that the Spartans have a plethora of young talent on the roster, with the past two recruiting classes being very good, and it will be imperative that Smith can keep that talent in East Lansing for his staff to develop.

Let’s take a look at ten players Michigan State and Coach Smith need to retain on the roster:

Cardinals S Jalen Thompson questionable to play vs. Rams as late addition injury report

The Cardinals added Thompson to the injury report on Saturday. He was not listed on the injury report all week.

On Saturday, they made it seven players who are questionable to play.

The team added safety Jalen Thompson to the injury report with a back injury, listing him as questionable to play.

Thompson was not listed on the injury report all week.

He missed the Cardinals’ first matchup against the Rams in Week 6, a 26-9 loss, with a hamstring injury.

Fellow safety Joey Blount, who plays on special teams, is also questionable to play.

On the season, Thompson has played in nine of the team’s 11 games. He has 48 tackles, two interceptions, four pass breakups, a forced fumble and a sack. He got that sack, the first of his NFL career, last week.

Cardinals still ‘sorting through’ injuries to James Conner, Jalen Thompson

Jonathan Gannon says the Cardinals are still “sorting through” both injuries.

The Arizona Cardinals lost two starters in their 34-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. Running back James Conner exited the game with a knee injury and safety Jalen Thompson left with a hamstring injury.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon didn’t have any new information on Monday when he spoke with reporters.

Where are the Cardinals at with both players and their injuries?

Gannon said they were “sorting through” both.

“I’m not trying to be coy with you guys,” he said. “It just takes a little bit of time to figure out injuries and opinions from people, and what’s the best thing to do with everybody. We’re still sorting it out.”

After Sunday’s game, Gannon said Conner was “feeling okay” and he had likely twisted his knee on his 35-yard run.

The Cardinals added running back Tony Jones off a waiver claim, but Gannon said it didn’t mean anything for or about Conner.

If either player is unavailable in Week 6, it would make things tough. The offense as basically gone through Conner this season and missing Thompson would mean the Cardinals would be without both their top safeties, as Budda Baker must miss at least one more game on injured reserve.
