Former Michigan State football QB rumored to be new starter at Arizona State

An MSU transfer QB is in line to take over the starting job at Arizona State

A part of the massive transfer exodus that happened during the transition from Mel Tucker to Jonathan Smith, Michigan State lost quarterback Sam Leavitt to the NCAA transfer portal.

While unfortunate, due to the skillset Leavitt has, it is a move that was best for both parties, especially now.

For MSU, Smith brought in Aidan Chiles, who is the same age as Leavitt. Now, Leavitt appears to be thriving in his new home.

According to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro, Leavitt outperformed former 5-star Jaden Rashada during spring camp and should be named the starting quarterback, while Rashada is expected to transfer now.

In one season with Michigan State, Leavitt completed 15-of-23 passes for 139 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He also added 67 yards on the ground on 13 carries.

The Jonathan Smith era at Michigan State football has arrived, and with it, we are going to see a TON of player movement as Smith tries to keep much of this talented roster intact while presumably bringing in guys from Oregon State and other schools around the country to put his stamp on the roster.

Below, we will keep track of every player who either enters the portal to leave, or joins MSU via the portal following the Smith hire at Michigan State.

It was a bit of a surprise when former Michigan State football quarterback Sam Leavitt entered the NCAA transfer portal after the acquisition of Jonathan Smith as the new head coach at MSU. Leavitt cited ‘hard feelings’ between him and Smith as the reason for his exit.

On Monday, Leavitt announced his new home: Arizona State.

Leavitt was a former 4-star from West Linn, Oregon. He played in four games for MSU, throwing for 139 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

REPORT: Huskers meet with another transfer portal quarterback

A new report has stated that the Nebraska Cornhuskers have met with another quarterback in the transfer portal.

A new report has stated that the Nebraska Cornhuskers have met with another quarterback in the transfer portal. On3 has reported that Michigan State quarterback Sam Leavitt and Nebraska offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield had a conversation on Monday.

The four-star prospect threw for 139 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Spartans in 2023. As a senior in high school in 2022, he led West Linn High School to a 12-1 record and the Oregon Class 6A State Title Game. Leavitt would throw for 3,065 yards with 36 touchdowns while running for 720 yards and eight touchdowns.

Nebraska has already met with another quarterback in the transfer portal, former Kansas State signal caller Will Howard. Leavitt will have four years of eligibility remaining after transferring.

Report: Michigan State football QB Sam Leavitt testing transfer portal due to ‘hard feelings’ with new HC Jonathan Smith

In a shocking report, Sam Leavitt said that he is apparently testing the portal due to ‘hard feelings’ with new MSU head coach Jonathan Smith

It wasn’t exactly a shock, necessarily, to see that Michigan State football freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt was reported to be entering the transfer portal as soon as he is able. What was a shock, was a bombshell report from Spartans Illustrated, where Leavitt outlined some ‘hard feelings’ between him and new head coach Jonathan Smith, along with a pretty firm assertion that he doesn’t really plan to come back to MSU.

‘I’m a home town kid and [Jonathan Smith] didn’t offer me,’ Leavitt told Spartans Illustrated. ‘There are some hard feelings there.’

‘I felt slighted by that,” said Leavitt. ‘Why would they like me now when they didn’t like me before?’

When asked if there was a chance he could still return to MSU, Leavitt said:

‘Yeah, I’m kinda just done.’

This is a much different tone from Leavitt than I have personally been hearing from people with tangential information about Leavitt’s decision. The word on the street was that Leavitt might enter the portal just for due diligence, with a team like Utah highly interested, but was ultimately in love with MSU and wanted to stay and compete. This is a far cry away from that, with it appearing the Leavitt era at Michigan State is now over before it really began.

Report: Michigan State football freshman QB Sam Leavitt expected to enter NCAA transfer portal

While it doesn’t mean he’s gone, MSU QB Sam Leavitt is reportedly expected to enter the transfer portal:

I have heard a lot of different things regarding Michigan State football freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt today, but at least for now, 247Sports is reporting that they expect him to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Leavitt was a huge recruiting win for MSU, and the former 4-star recruit showed some skills in limited snaps this season. With a new coach, Leavitt may want to see what is out there for him, but I would expect that MSU will still have a chance to bring him back.

MSU fans can expect a lot of players to enter the portal to at least see what’s out there and review their options. It doesn’t mean they are gone for good, and is just a wise move for them to at least get feedback in the portal.

10 Michigan State football players Jonathan Smith needs to retain

10 current MSU players Jonathan Smith should heavily focus on retaining:

The first thing on the list for Jonathan Smith upon arriving to East Lansing will be meeting with the current roster, and recruiting the current roster to stick around and not hit the transfer portal.

No one is denying that the Spartans have a plethora of young talent on the roster, with the past two recruiting classes being very good, and it will be imperative that Smith can keep that talent in East Lansing for his staff to develop.

Let’s take a look at ten players Michigan State and Coach Smith need to retain on the roster:

BREAKING: Katin Houser to start for MSU football vs Nebraska

Katin Houser will start, Sam Leavitt will play, according to Harlan Barnett in his pregame radio show

On his pregame radio show ahead of Michigan State’s game against Nebraska, Harlan Barnett has announced that Katin Houser was going to be the starting quarterback for Michigan State against Nebraska.

He did mention, true freshman Sam Leavitt was going to get some playing time in this game as well, meaning a 2-QB system could be on the horizon.

MSU commit, 4-star QB Sam Leavitt experiences big bump in updated On3 recruiting ranking

Michigan State football will officially be adding a top 10 quarterback prospect to their roster next fall

Michigan State football will be adding a top 10 quarterback prospect to its roster this fall.

Four-star quarterback Sam Leavitt, a Spartans commit, experienced a nice bump in the updated On3 recruiting rankings that came out on Monday. Leavitt moved up 65 spots to the No. 76 overall and is the No. 7 quarterback in the 2023 class.

Cody Bellaire of On3 had this to say about Leavitt:

“Honestly, Sam Leavitt may have put together the most impressive senior season out of all of the top quarterbacks in the country. He threw for over 3,000 yards, ran for over 1,000 yards, threw 36 passing TDs, ran for 8 rushing TDs with only 5 interceptions and nearly a 70% completion rate. He put on an absolute show as a senior, and he deserved his bump in the ratings.”

Leavitt was a late addition to the Spartans’ 2023 class, and it sounds like he could be the biggest game changer for Michigan State. Click on the tweet below to read more on Leavitt from On3:
