Ime Udoka revealed he told Celtics players what led to his suspension

Udoka, now the head coach of the Houston Rockets, faced a tough night as his team fell 145-113 to the Celtics on Saturday night.

In his first return to TD Garden since leaving the Boston Celtics after being let go due to his workplace misconduct scandal, Ime Udoka, now the head coach of the Houston Rockets, faced a tough night as his team fell 145-113 to the Celtics on Saturday night.

This emotionally charged game not only highlighted Udoka’s past contributions to the Celtics in terms of developing young players and a culture (not always in a good way, either) but also underscored the Celtics’ continued excellence on their own home court, enhancing their record home winning streak to an impressive 19-0, the longest such streak in franchise history.

Following the blowout win, CLNS Media reporters Bobby Manning and Josue Pavon took a deep dive into the dynamics of Udoka’s return and its impact on both clubs postgame for the “Garden Report” podcast.

How former Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka will change the Houston Rockets

What sort of head coach are the Rockets getting? What details we have yet to hear might end up coming to light after the hire? How will Udoka be treated as he re-emerges into the public eye?

The Boston Celtics landed on their feet after being sideswiped by the scandal that led to them suspending and then parting ways with the head coach that guided them to the 2022 NBA Finals. They replaced the disgraced Ime Udoka with then-assistant coach Joe Mazzulla first as an interim head coach and then the full gig upon Udoka’s ouster.

Now, the Houston Rockets have hired the former Celtics coach despite his reported improper relationship with a female staffer, rolling the dice that his on-court upside will outweigh whatever baggage the former Boston coach carries in the wake of the scandal that upended his Celtics tenure.

What sort of head coach are the Rockets getting? What details we have yet to hear might end up coming to light after the hire? How will Udoka be treated as he re-emerges into the public eye?

The host of the Athletic “NBA Show” podcast Dave DuFour recently did his best to answer those questions with co-host Jay King; check out the clip above to hear what they had to say about the Udoka to Rockets hire.

Jaylen Brown had doubts the Boston Celtics were being honest with him during offseason Kevin Durant rumors

Those doubts were put to rest after he reached out to check, but why did Brad Stevens and Jayson Tatum wait for Brown to ask?

It seems star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown was not happy with the way his team handled the rumors tying him to Kevin Durant over the summer. In a recent interview with The Ringer’s Logan Murdock, Brown described being thrown for a loop when he learned teammate Jayson Tatum was working out with the Brooklyn Nets star in the thick of those offseason rumors.

Durant “and JT are friends,” the Georgia native said. “They (were) working out together and whatnot. So, I wasn’t sure what the energy was. I wasn’t sure what the direction of the organization was.”

Brown made a point of reaching out to Tatum and team president Brad Stevens to learn where everyone’s head was at.

“Once we all got together and kind of talked it through, we all left on the same page,” said the former Cal-Berkeley standout. “But the action that was taking place during that time, it just didn’t seem like that was the direction that the organization was going in. I don’t know. It was hard to tell, at least.”

“It’s hard coming into teams and organizations and being warm,” he shared. “They operate on different principles, I think. This is an organization. They look at it as a business, where they’ll tell you one thing, and then behind closed doors, they’ll say another, and they’ll trade you off.

“(They will tell) you, ‘We love you,’ and they’ll be having like, ‘We’re going to trade him next week.’ I think that’s just how business is run,” he suggested. “Like, where I’m from in the South, if you don’t come through the front door, it’s considered disrespectful. I feel like a lot of times, when you deal in these corporate spaces, everybody wants to come through the back door or come through an angle.”

Jayson Tatum’s trainer Drew Hanlen on how 2022 NBA Finals loss became fuel for 2022-23

Hanlen reached out to the Celtics star to plot their revenge even before the dust settled on the loss.

Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has long had a close relationship with his trainer Drew Hanlen of Pure Sweat fame, and when the St. Louis native found his Celtics squad sent fishing in Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals at the hands of the Golden State Warriors, one of the first people Tatum heard from was his trainer.

Hanlen made a point of reaching out to the Duke alum after the soul-crushing loss — but more out of preparation for the campaign to come than out of pity, according to the man himself in a recent interview with Basketball News’ Alex Kennedy.

“The first text message I sent to him was, ‘Hey, you’re going to be back. And you’re going to be better because of this,'” shared Hanlen.

MLB Free Agency Tracker 2022-23: Jacob deGrom lands in Texas, Justin Verlander joins the Mets and Aaron Judge becomes a Yankee for life

We’re following the MLB offseason action all winter long

The World Series may be over but the baseball calendar marches on.

While the Houston Astros are still reveling in their 4-2 series victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, players and teams are already plotting how to take them down next season.

As the hot stove starts to heat up, the Los Angeles Dodgers are already the odds-on favorites to win the 2023 World Series, but there’s much to be decided before then—like which team is going to sign megastar Aaron Judge (update: the Yankees, of course) after one of the best contract-year performances in sports history.

But the pursuit of Judge is just one aspect of this winter’s star-studded free agent class.

As players continue opting out of their contracts and hitting the open market, we’ll continue updating the list below. You can also find updated World Series odds here as players begin to sign and lines continue to move.

Celtics’ strong start to offseason downgraded to C-minus after injuries, suspension

The team’s once league-leading offseason has fallen off a bit, which the folks at Bleacher Report took note of.

At the start of the 2022 NBA offseason, the Boston Celtics were the first club to make major moves to fortify a roster that had just fallen two wins shy of an NBA title.

First, they traded non-rotation players and a draft pick for All-Star caliber guard Malcolm Brogdon. They followed that by signing Danilo Gallinari to a mini-midlevel exception.

But then the offseason started going sideways. First, the team lost Gallinari for at least the entire regular season and perhaps beyond due to injury. A scandal blew up out of nowhere, resulting in second-year head coach Ime Udoka being suspended for an entire season.

Add a lengthy recovery for big man Robert Williams III and his surgically-repaired knee, and the team’s once league-leading offseason has fallen off, which the folks at Bleacher Report took note of in their final offseason grades on all 30 teams in the league.

Boston Celtics make solid showing in NBA’s annual GM survey

The results, written up by the NBA’s John Schuhmann, were created from a total of 50 questions sent to GMs around the league.

The league’s annual “NBA app” survey of all 30 ball clubs’ general managers has been published, and as you might expect for the Boston Celtics‘ current status as serious contenders for an NBA title, the favorite team of many of you reading this has a substantial presence among the included questions’ replies.

The results, written up by the NBA’s John Schuhmann, were created from a total of 50 questions sent to GMs around the league, with the caveat included that those general managers were not allowed to answer any questions about their own team or the players on their rosters.

Let’s dive into where the Celtics stand in the results.

Is the Boston Celtics’ 2022-23 campaign ruined before it even begins?

The Boston Celtics got to work early in their 2022 NBA offseason, quickly putting together one of the best offseasons in the league after picking up Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari — or so they thought.

The Boston Celtics got to work quickly in the offseason after losing the 2022 NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors, and they put together one of the best offseasons in the league by picking up Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari. So they thought.

Soon after, Gallinari was injured. Starting center Robert Williams III soon followed. The came an even bigger bombshell: Head coach Ime Udoka was suspended for the season for violating team policies. Almost lost in the tumult of that scandal came the news just before training camp that Timelord’s likely absence was going to be roughly double the initial assessment.

Is the Celtics’ 2022-23 campaign ruined by this series of unfortunate events before it even begins?

The folks over at the Hoops Reference YouTube channel put together a video exploring exactly this question. Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say.

Celtics Lab 144: Talking training camp and setting season goals with Gary Gulman

Despite all of the unexpected chaos swirling around the team, the Celtics are still in an enviable position and plan to make the most of it.

The Boston Celtics are doing their best to get past the Ime Udoka scandal and injuries to multiple frontcourt players by focusing on the season ahead. And the players — and coaches — who are in the building are working toward the goal of hanging a banner in Boston at the end of this season.

After a tense media day on Monday that made clear the players know about as much as fans and analysts regarding the situation that led to Udoka’s suspension (i.e. not much), the team seemed eager to get to work.

We brought on a friend of the pod, Gary Gulman, to join your usual hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast to talk about training camp and goals for the season ahead.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum changing his diet heading into the 2022-23 NBA season

‘As I’ve gotten a little older, (I’ve been) realizing that the things I eat matter more.’ said the Celtics star.

Those among us with a few more years to our name know that the body reacts differently to how one takes care of it as one ages, and for star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum, that is a reality he is now incorporating into how he takes care of himself to ensure his body is able to respond when he needs it to the most.

Speaking at Boston’s 2022 Media Day proceedings, the St. Louis native related how he’s shifted his approach to what he consumes to that end. “I never want to miss a game,” he explained to NBC Sports Boston.

“There’s a science part to it,” he continued. Proper recovery and things like that. The thing I worked on this summer is changing my diet, the things I eat before and after workouts to help me feel better and have more energy.

“I’ve always been a relatively in-shape guy, I could always eat what I want. As I’ve gotten a little older, (I’ve been) realizing that the things I eat matter more. So, (I’m) really changing my diet approaching this season.”
