Notre Dame Fighting Thanos?!?!

Check out some concept work of Marvel themed college helmets done by 247Sports.

When I saw the headline Marvel themed college football helmets, I wondered what was in store as 247Sports prepared to change some of the most iconic looks to Marvel comic book themed mascots.

Some of them were very obvious, Michigan didn’t have to change much as they were already the Wolverines, Iowa the same with Hawkeye (just added an s), and Air Force staying with the Falcons. Other teams saw additions to their names like Richmond adding men to Spiders, Pitt added Black to their Panthers (RIP Chadwick Boseman), Toledo added Racoons’ to become the Rocket Racoons, Duke transformed into the Daredevils and Oregon became Howard the Ducks’.

There were some more fantastic reworked names such as the Arizona Hellcats, Marshall Thundering Thors, Army Moonknights, Virginia Tech Loki’s and others.

What they had in store for Notre Dame was quite different, as an avid Marvel reader and viewer, I knew this one was going to be a bit more difficult than others. The closest Notre Dame figure in a Marvel comic was actually when the reworked opening game covers for ESPN in 2016. They ended up with the Fighting Thanos’, if you have been under a rock for the last ten years then you need no introduction to the big, baddie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you are unfamiliar, Thanos is the epitome of evil, using the Infinity Gauntlet to house the Infinity Stones and posses massive power.

It’s hard to argue with what 247Sports chose for Notre Dame, it was going to be tough anyways. By adding the Infinity Gauntlet to the iconic gold helmet was a nice addition, but even cooler was the middle of the gauntlet was a clover. The kid in me loved it, moving away from tradition and having fun with Marvel. Which one did you like the best?

Jets claim DB Zane Lewis from Cardinals

On Monday, the Jets claimed undrafted free agent DB Zane Lewis on waivers, the Air Force Academy product has ties to the coaching staff.

The Jets claimed DB Zane Lewis on waivers from Arizona, the team announced Monday.

Lewis signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of the Air Force Academy back in May.

Now, Lewis comes to New York already having some familiarity with the coaching staff. He’ll reunite with his former position coach, Chip Vaughn, who is now Gang Green’s assistant defensive backs coach. Vaughn spent two seasons as the Falcons’ secondary coach before accepting a position on Gregg Williams’ defensive coaching staff this past offseason.

At Air Force, Lewis played in 37 games across four seasons. During his senior campaign, Lewis recorded 45 tackles and one interception playing in all 13 games. In addition, Lewis tied for fourth in the nation with 15 passes defended in 2019 and he allowed only 5.0 yards per target in coverage, which ranked in the 93rd percentile among qualified cornerbacks, according to Michael Nania.

Lewis brings a dimension of speed to Gang Green’s secondary, which is evident in his 4.45 40-yard dash time and two career 99-yard interception returns for touchdowns.

New York has yet to announce a corresponding move and with the season just a little under two weeks away, Lewis figures to be a potential practice squad addition.

JK Scott’s brother, Charlie Scott, is now a punter on Alabama’s roster

Former Alabama star punter JK Scott’s younger brother, Charlie Scott, is now on Alabama football’s roster.

Former Alabama star punter JK Scott’s younger brother, Charlie Scott, is now on Alabama football’s roster.

Charlie Scott has spent the last four years at Air Force, where he started the last two seasons and averaged 40.5 yards on 30 attempts last season.

He also had a 53-yard punt as well as four punts over 50 yards last season.

In his Air Force bio, some of the information says:

“His brother, JK, was an All-American punter at Alabama and helped the team to two national championships and is currently the punter for the Green Bay Packers….took campus recruiting visits to Alabama, Clemson and Wisconsin … completed Operations Air Force and was on the cadet cadre for Basic Cadet Training in the summer of 2018 … was on the cadet cadre for survival training and completed the powered flight program last summer.”

Scott will be joining Ty Perine and Will Reichard on the Alabama squad for punters.

JK Scott has continued to impress in the NFL.

So far in his career, Scott has put up some impressive numbers. Not only did he become the first punter in Packer’s history to register a punt of 58-plus yards in each of his first three NFL games, he has also averaged 44.7 yards per punt as a rookie in 2018. So far this season, Scott has continued to impress. He is averaging just under 50 yards per punt. His longest punt last season has been an impressive 66 yarder.

Scott is now the starter for the Packers, and will no doubt end up in the history books in the Packer’s franchise as well.

If Charlie Scott is anything like his brother, he’ll certainly be a HUGE asset for Alabama this season!

Report: Second Group of Five Conference Cancels Football

The MAC is no longer the only conference to have cancelled football this fall as another Group of Five conference joined them in doing so.

As we went back and forth with the Big Ten cancelling and then not actually cancelling football for the fall earlier today, we do now have word that another FBS conference has pulled the plug on their football season.

The Moutntain West Conference has canceled their 2020 football season in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and over fear of player health and safety concerns.  Brett McMurphy of Stadium was first with the report.

McMurphy’s report adds that the conference will consider playing football in the spring but makes no guarantee to it happening.

The Mountain West Conference is home to Air Force, Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State, Nevada, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, Utah State and Wyoming in football.

The Mountain West Conference joins the Mid-American Conference as the first two to officially cancel the 2020 season.  The addition of Connecticut cancelling football last week brings the total to 26 FBS programs that won’t play football this fall.

Notre Dame Football: Stream All 2000 Home Games

2000 was a surprise season that saw Notre Dame go to the BCS. Relive all six home games online NOW!

I have been a passionate Notre Dame football fan for as long as I can remember.  Most kids in my class grew up loving everything in regards to the Chicago Bears but that has never quite been the case for me as I’ve always enjoyed the college game and specifically Notre Dame football more.

I was a freshman in high school in the fall of 2000 and had never been to a game before.  My sister was starting her freshman year at St. Mary’s College that same fall which meant my fandom went from “strong” to “obsessive”.

Maybe I’ll write more about that season in the not so distant future but in the meantime I’ll let you know that all home games from the 2000 Notre Dame football season are available to stream.

Week One:  vs. Texas A&M
Notre Dame is coming off just a five-win season in 1999 but starts the 2000 season right with an impressive showing against Texas A&M as the Aggies make their first-ever trip to Notre Dame Stadium.

Week Two:  vs. No. 1 Nebraska
For the first time since 1993 the top-ranked team in the country came to South Bend.  Seemingly 50,000 Nebraska fans made the trip to see two Notre Dame special team scores and Bob Davie play for overtime.  Whoops.

Week Three:  vs. No. 13 Purdue
After Arnaz Battle broke his hand against Nebraska, Gary Godsey was called upon to help get the Irish a win.  Their defense and special teams helped out as Nick Setta’s game-winning field goal as time expired sent the Irish to 2-1.

Week Six: vs. Stanford
After a loss at Michigan State two weeks earlier and coming off a bye, Matt LoVecchio made his first start for the Irish in what would be the first of seven-straight wins to close the regular season.  Of just as much importance, this was the first Notre Dame football game I ever attended.

Week Nine: vs. Air Force
Following a pair of wins over both Navy and West Virginia, Notre Dame returned home at 5-2 to take on a pesky Air Force team.  Thanks to heroics from Glenn Earl and Joey Getherall, a stunning upset was avoided.

Week Eleven: vs. Boston College
Following the thriller over Air Force, Notre Dame enjoyed a bye week before welcoming Boston College to South Bend for Senior Day.  The Irish controlled things for the duration in this one, winning 28-16 and finishing the home season 5-1.

Notre Dame would go on to beat Rutgers and USC on the road, finishing the season an unlikely 9-2 and earning a berth in the BCS for the first time where they would get run out of the building by Chad Johnson and No. 5 Oregon State.

Georgia basketball assistant accepts head coaching job

A Georgia basketball assistant has taken the head coaching job at Air Force.

On Tuesday, Air Force announced that it has hired Georgia basketball assistant coach Joe Scott to become the program’s new head coach.

Scott returns to the Academy for his second stint as head coach of the Falcons. He served as Air Force’s head coach from 2000-04.

“I would like to thank Nathan Pine for the opportunity to return to the Academy, as we pursue our common goal of reenergizing Air Force basketball,” Scott said in a statement.

“Thank you to our Superintendent, Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria, members of the search committee and everyone else at the Academy connected with the search process. It was a first-class operation all the way.”

Scott served as an assistant under Tom Crean at Georgia for the last two seasons. He has also had head coaching positions at Princeton and Denver.

In his 16 seasons as a head coach, Scott has compiled a record of 235-240 and was named the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2004 after guiding the Falcons to a 22–7 record and an NCAA Tournament berth.

Rams Finish Regular Season On A High Note

After a close loss, the Rams respond with a convincing victory.

CSU gains momentum heading into the Mountain West tournament.

Both teams were coming into this game off of close results in their previous contests. Air Force won a close contest over New Mexico, while Colorado State lost a heart breaker against the Aztecs. This time it was the Rams earning a convincing victory heading into the Mountain West tournament.

On a day that was supposed to be about the seniors, it was a sophomore who stole the show. Kendle Moore had himself a day finishing with 21 points on 7-11 shooting. All of Moore’s attempts came from behind the arc. It wasn’t all individual effort for the Rams, as they finished with 25 assists on 29 made baskets.

The Rams seniors had a quiet day themselves. Nico Carvacho was the leading senior on the day finishing with 12 points and six rebounds. Kris Martin finished with six points and Hyron Edwards finished with two points and five assists.

Air Force had trouble taking off today. A slow start turned into a 14 point deficit at halftime. The engines seemed to wake up in the second half as they were able to outscore the Rams, but the Falcons couldn’t do enough to hold off Colorado State.

The Falcons had three players finish in double figures. They were led by Lavelle Scottie who finished with 20 points. Joining him in double figures were A.J. Walker with 15 points and Ryan Swan with 12 points. Swan also grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Colorado State is locked into the sixth seed and will face Wyoming in the first round of the Mountain West tournament. Air Force is the ninth seed and will face either Fresno State or New Mexico in the first round.

Notre Dame Football: Will Irish Crack Top Ten in Final AP Poll?

Notre Dame’s best win ends up being over Navy who will finish the year as the only ranked opponent the Irish defeated in 2019.

I’m well-aware that if there isn’t a “No. 1” next to your name at the end of the season that if you’re a blue blood in college football that the number ultimately doesn’t matter a whole heck of a lot.

With that said, I’m legit curious as to where Notre Dame will rank in the end of season polls as they won their final five contests of the regular season yet saw almost no change, going from 16 to 14 between October 27, right after the Michigan loss and December 8, after conference championship weekend.

So where will Notre Dame fall in the final rankings that will come out after LSU and Clemson play for the national championship next Monday?

In order to figure that out we have to look at the current rankings and see what has changed or who may potentially fall.

Spots 1-3 will remain the same three teams with the title winner ending up first while the runner-up will check in at two and Ohio State will be three after falling in a thriller to Clemson.

Number four will likely go to 12-2 Georgia who won the Sugar Bowl as Oklahoma will fall and I’m fully on-board with that.

How far might that be?  Not far enough to really effect Notre Dame but the 12-2 Sooners will likely check in no-better than five but at worst you’re probably looking at number eight.

Along with Oklahoma you will most likely see Oregon, Alabama and Florida at five through eight as you now enter likely Notre Dame territory.

I don’t think the Irish’s 33-9 win over Iowa State was dominating enough to pass up Penn State who got a hard-fought win over Memphis in the Cotton Bowl, but it was still convincing nonetheless.

The nine through eleven range is exactly where I have Notre Dame coming in with the most logical case probably being for them to be 11.

Here’s why:

Penn State was already ranked ahead of Notre Dame and perhaps they didn’t dominate the Cotton Bowl but they were in control for the vast majority against a good, not great Memphis team.  In no way, shape or form does Penn State deserve to fall behind the Irish.

The debate to me comes in at who gets set at No. 10: Notre Dame or Minnesota?

Both the Irish and Golden Gophers finished the season 11-2 but to me, Minnesota’s wins are better than Notre Dame’s and that should be taken into consideration.  Minnesota has a win over top ten Penn State (according to my poll, anyway) as well as Auburn who will finish in the top 15.

Notre Dame’s best win ends up being over Navy who will finish the year as the only ranked opponent the Irish defeated in 2019.  That has to count for something even if Minnesota’s out of Big Ten schedule consisted of South Dakota State, Fresno State and Georgia Southern.

From there I think you find your next gap.  Here is how I would rank the rest of my final top 25 and here’s why for each:

12.  Baylor – three losses but what was their best win?  Playing Oklahoma closely, twice?
13.  Utah – What looked like a likely College Football Playoff berth at the start of December ends with an embarrassing loss where the Utes appeared to have no interest in playing a very average Texas team.  Perhaps 13 is generous for them.
14.  Auburn – Some great wins along the way but four losses are four losses, even if they came against largely SEC teams. Minnesota beating them on New Year’s Day keeps the Tigers from a top-ten finish.
15.  Wisconsin – Four losses for the Badgers who gave away the Rose Bowl and who I still can’t understand for the life of me how they lost to eventual 6-7 Illinois.
16.  Memphis – fought hard against Penn State in the Cotton Bowl despite going through a head coaching change so falling only one spot (Minnesota passes them) feels justified.
17.  Michigan – No shame in losing to Alabama as I keep them exactly where they were entering bowl season.
18.  Iowa – Destroying USC knocks the Trojans out of the top-ten and wraps up a season that saw the Hawkeyes finish with ten victories.  It’d be a hair higher had they not lost to Michigan head-to-head.
19.  Appalachian State – Had they played and beat someone better than North Carolina perhaps I’d have them higher but a great accomplishment nonetheless to finish with just one loss and in the top-twenty nationally.
20.  Navy – Since the final regular season poll was released they dominated Army and snuck by Kansas State in the Liberty Bowl and deserve a slight bump.
21. Cincinnati – All the credit in the world due to Luke Fickell who has the Bearcats humming after dominating Boston College.  My only question is how long before he’s back in the Big Ten?
22. Boise State – It was a great year until Chris Peterson took out a years worth of frustration on his former team, riding off into the sunset and dominating Boise State.  A solid but not great season for the Broncos.
23.  Air Force – Controlled the line of scrimmage and the Cheez-It Bowl versus Washington State as the Falcons record their first 11 win campaign since 1998.
24.  Texas A&M – They are still on the short list of most disappointing teams in 2019 for me but at least the Aggies ended the season on a high note, defeating old conference-rival Oklahoma State.
25.  Florida Atlantic – The Owls finish the year 11-3 after beating up SMU in their bowl game.  An impressive showing worthy of praise after Lane Kiffin didn’t coach the bowl game due to accepting the Ole Miss job.

That’s my best guess at what 1-25 will look like in the final AP Poll.  Thoughts?  Share them in our Fighting Irish Forum!

Week 7 DPI Rankings: Lobos Rising After Six-Game Streak

New Mexico, Boise State climbing in the latest DPI rankings for Week 7

It was back to non-conference play last week for the league’s affiliate members on the heels of the opening salvo to the long Mountain West season. Not everybody was in action—and some now wish they hadn’t been.

But it wasn’t all misery.

Some teams are making big strides, including one squad trying to make a move into the uppermost echelon of the MWC.

Below are the DPI rankings heading into the heart of Week 7. If you’re new to the rankings or just want a refresher, head here for a rundown of how the DPI is calculated. The ratings below reflect games played through Tuesday, December 17. As always, non-Division I games are not counted in the DPI.

[lawrence-related id=23624]

#1 — SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS

Last Week: #1

The Aztecs moved to the #1 spot in the Mountain West last week and with no games since their close shave against San Jose State, they haven’t moved much up or down. Brian Dutcher’s team is still undefeated and boasts one of the best defenses in the country. Malachi Flynn’s star turn has propelled SDSU into the national polls, along with the play of Matt Mitchell, Yanni Wetzell, and Jordan Schakel. If KJ Feagin can provide a little more offense, this team could really turn in a special season.

#2 — UTAH STATE AGGIES

Last Week: #2

It’s been a bit of a rough patch for the Aggies over the past few games. They still have one of the two best rosters in the league, but they aren’t quite living up to preseason expectations so far. After losing to Saint Mary’s and looking underwhelming in their first two Mountain West games, Utah State fell to BYU on Saturday in Salt Lake City. It was only their second loss, but it’s a missed opportunity for a good out-of-conference win to put on their NCAA Tournament resume.

#3 — NEW MEXICO LOBOS

Last Week: #4

The Lobos have won six straight after toppling New Mexico State and Grand Canyon since the last DPI rankings were posted here. Though they aren’t playing at the level of SDSU just yet, this patchwork roster of homegrown talent and incoming transfers has performed admirably in the early going. JaQuan Lyle has been everything that Paul Weir could have wanted and more. Oh, and Carlton Bragg is averaging a double-double. So far, so good.

#4 — NEVADA WOLF PACK

Last Week: #3

The Wolf Pack looked like they were starting to turn a corner over the past few weeks, winning five straight games on either side of Thanksgiving. But last week, Nevada was the second casualty of BYU’s surge, along with Utah State and UNLV. The offense had been clicking on all cylinders, but immediately downshifted from a 100-point performance against Air Force to a 42-point outing against the Cougars. That kind of volatility that makes it tough to trust Steve Alford’s club.

#5 — BOISE STATE BRONCOS

Last Week: #6

Leon Rice is getting things back on track in Boise, but outside of their win over BYU—before Yoeli Childs came back, of course—the Broncos haven’t really beaten anybody. It was another rocky showing for Boise State last week, with a midweek loss to Tulsa preceding a blowout win over Alabama State. Derrick Alston is averaging 21 points and Justinian Jessup is finding his form. But the starting five is not the problem here; Rice’s team suffers from a lack of depth.

#6 — COLORADO STATE RAMS

Last Week: #5

The Rams jumped out to a promising start, but they’ve lost three of their past four games, including both of their opening Mountain West bouts. Mixed in there was a 72-68 win over South Dakota State, and while the Jackrabbits are not a bad squad by any means, that they played CSU so closely gives a good indication of where the Rams are right now. Niko Medved’s team gave in-state rivals Colorado a run for their money, but ultimately fell 56-48 over the weekend.

#7 — AIR FORCE FALCONS

Last Week: #8

The defense still leaves a lot to be desired, but recently, the Falcons have been getting better results than they did during a rough November. The new month has been kinder to the cadets, with Air Force winning four of its past five (Note: Tuesday’s 99-42  win over Johnson & Wales is not counted in the DPI). AJ Walker has taken an important step forward as an offensive option. The sophomore was averaging 20 points per game over the past three games coming into Tuesday.

#8 — FRESNO STATE BULLDOGS

Last Week: #10

Justin Huston finally got his team to a second Division I win on Saturday against Cal Poly. But the bigger story here is the seven losses that they have already incurred. Nate Grimes is doing exactly what was expected of him so far, averaging a double-double with 13.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per night. Guards Jarred Hyder and New Williams both have some good performances under their belts, but they haven’t been able to click at the same time. That needs to change.

#9 — UNLV RUNNIN’ REBELS

Last Week: #9

The Rebels didn’t play last week, so the bad taste of the 33-point loss to BYU back has been lingering for a week and a half. There have been a lot of close calls, with UNLV playing in four separate overtime games so far. They are shooting under 42% from the field and turning the ball over 15 times a night. Games against Pacific and Robert Morris this week offer TJ Otzelberger the chance to start making some headway in his first year at the helm.

#10 — WYOMING COWBOYS

Last Week: #7

Allen Edwards got his Cowboys out to a 3-3 start, but they have dropped five straight games, including their most recent defeat at the hands of Northern Colorado. The Bears didn’t just sneak past Wyoming, either—the Big Sky hopefuls handed the home team a 21-point drubbing at Arena-Auditorium. The defense has been fair to middling, but the offense has been dreadful thus far. The Cowboys are shooting under 50% on two-pointers and just over 30% on threes.

#11 — SAN JOSÉ STATE SPARTANS

Last Week: #11

There’s a bit of a running joke around here about which Spartan is most likely to transfer next year, since the sputtering Spartans have seen five double-digit scorers depart in the past three offseasons—including Brandon Clarke, who parlayed his post-SJSU star turn at Gonzaga into a budding NBA career. All jokes aside, Seneca Knight has separated himself as the Spartans’ top option, scoring 12.5 points per game. Hopefully the sophomore can remain an important building block for Jean Prioleau.

That’s it for this week. Check back next week to see who’s rising and falling in the Mountain West and be sure to visit the Dieckhoff Power Index daily for updated rankings on all 353 teams in Division I basketball.
