Potential Thunder draft prospect Donovan Clingan helps UConn in win over San Diego State

Potential Thunder draft prospect Donovan Clingan helps in UConn’s win over San Diego State.

The Oklahoma City Thunder could have two 2024 first-round picks in the lottery range. They own the Houston Rockets’ top-four protected pick and the Utah Jazz’s top-10 protected pick. The former looks more likely to come to OKC than the latter.

With the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament underway, the top prospects are in the spotlight as they draw national attention for their postseason performances.

Considering the Thunder will likely have at least one lottery pick, plenty of possible additions via the draft give fans a chance to see how they match up in high-stress situations.

One possibility is UConn center Donovan Clingan. He finished with eight points on 4-of-9 shooting, eight rebounds, two assists and one block in 23 minutes in No. 1 UConn’s 82-52 win over No. 5 San Diego State in the Sweet 16 on Thursday.

In his second season, Clingan has been part of a dominant UConn squad that seeks to repeat as national champions. The 7-foot-2 center averaged 12.5 points on 64% shooting, 7.2 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

At 280 pounds, he has an NBA-ready frame and can give a team a classic rim-running big who can protect the rim. UConn went 31-3 and is No. 1 in the East Region.

The Thunder could envision Clingan adding serious size at center. He could start alongside Holmgren for jumbo lineups or serve as an efficient backup center for OKC.

Softball goes 0-2 in its first day at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

The Nebraska softball team opened its first day at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a doubleheader against San Diego State and No. 19 UCLA.

The Nebraska softball team opened its first day at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a doubleheader against San Diego State and No. 19 UCLA. The Huskers fell in hard-fought games, losing to San Diego State 3-2 then 9-8 to UCLA.

In the loss to the Aztecs, Nebraska held a one-run lead twice but struggled to pull away, going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Peyton Cody led the Huskers in the batter’s box, going 2-for-3 and hitting a home run.

Freshman Emmerson Cope also drove in a run for Nebraska, putting it on the board in the second inning. Cope also started in the circle and pitched for 3.1 innings, giving up one run. Sarah Harness pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one run.

In the loss to UCLA, the Huskers fumbled an 8-4 lead to the Bruins in the seventh, after holding UCLA went up 4-1 in the first. Billie Andrews powered Nebraska’s bats, hitting 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs, two RBIs and three runs scored. Freshman Samantha Bland doubled twice and drove in two runs, while Cody hit 1-for-2 with an RBI double.

Kaylin Kinney threw 3.1 innings of relief and was charged with five runs. She pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief heading into the seventh inning.

The Huskers fall to 6-5 with the loss and will play No. 23 Oregon Saturday for the second day of the tournament. The first pitch is at noon and can be viewed on FloSoftball.

Former Trojan Jude Wolfe commits to San Diego State, will join former Colorado OC Sean Lewis

Jude Wolfe will play for Sean Lewis in San Diego, a shrewd move for a player in search of playing time.

USC tight end Jude Wolfe announced last month that he was entering the transfer portal and leaving the program after five seasons.

“I would like to start by thanking all of my head coaches, position coaches, and teammates I’ve worked with over the last five years,” he wrote in a post shared on social media. “Thank you to all of the medical, training, and strength staff for providing me with excellent care and getting my health back to 100%.

“I am forever grateful to The University of Southern California for giving me the opportunity to earn both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree.”

Jude Wolfe has now made the decision that he will be playing for San Diego State. Former Deion Sanders assistant Sean Lewis left Colorado to take the Aztecs’ open head coaching position. Wolfe found a good landing spot, since Lewis is highly regarded in the industry as a sharp offensive mind.

This past season, Wolfe made 11 appearances, brought in two receptions for five yards, and scored his first career touchdown in USC’s win over Colorado on Sept. 30.

In his five-year run, Wolfe was injured a lot. In his career he had 33 appearances, 12 receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown.

Wolfe played high school football at Bellflower (California) St. John Bosco, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 209 overall recruit and the fifth-best tight end in the country.

San Diego State is preparing for its first season under Sean Lewis. Longtime SDSU head coach Brady Hoke retired at the end of the 2023 season. The Aztecs finished 4-8 this past season.

Reese Waters has become a much better player since leaving Andy Enfield and USC

Reese Waters dominated Gonzaga for San Diego State. A month ago, Gonzaga dominated USC. Bad look for Andy Enfield.

When we think about why this USC men’s basketball season has fallen so far short of its potential, one reason is that Andy Enfield failed to develop the players he had. Note the specific language: had, not has.

It’s true that Enfield isn’t developing his current players at USC. However, Enfield didn’t develop the players he previously had as well. One such player: Reese Waters, who transferred to San Diego State in the offseason.

Friday night, San Diego State went into Spokane and comfortably defeated Gonzaga, 84-74. That’s a 10-point win over a Gonzaga team which blew out USC four weeks ago in Las Vegas. Reese Waters was the star.

Waters scored 22 points. Beyond that, he did so on efficient 8-of-11 shooting. He committed zero turnovers. He played solid defense. He logged 35 minutes. That’s not the role-player basketball he offered USC. That’s a star turn. That’s an elite-level performance for the Aztecs. Coach Brian Dutcher is getting the most out of Reese Waters. Andy Enfield never got that level of quality from him at USC.

Seeing Reese Waters play at this level while USC struggles is a really bad look for Enfield. It helps paint the picture — one small piece of a larger portrait — of why the Trojans are falling short this season.

Former Wisconsin QB/TE lands new head coaching job

Former Wisconsin QB/TE lands new head coaching job

Former Wisconsin quarterback and tight end Sean Lewis was named the head coach at San Diego State earlier this week.

The former Badger had spent the year at Colorado with Deion Sanders, that after a highly-successful run at Kent State from 2018-2022.

Lewis played at Wisconsin from 2005-2007. ESPN says he recorded one career catch for seven yards. He joined the program in the class of 2004 as a three-star pro-style quarterback.

Lewis is now viewed as one of the up-and-coming coaches in the sport and one of the brightest offensive minds. It is widely accepted that Kent State is one of the worst jobs in the country, yet Lewis took it to the MAC Championship in 2021.

Now after a disastrous year in Colorado (which wasn’t his doing), Lewis has a new job.

REPORT: San Diego State spurns Tony White for Colorado OC Sean Lewis

Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White will not be heading west as Colorado OC Sean Lewis is expected to be the next head coach at San Diego State

Nebraska defensive coordinator Tony White is not leaving Lincoln, at least not yet.

On Tuesday, it was reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel that San Diego State is expected to come to a deal with Colorado offensive coordinator Sean Lewis to become the next head coach of the Aztecs. It was previously reported that Tony White had interviewed for the job at San Diego State.

Lewis, the former head coach at Kent State, left the Flashes last offseason to join Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado. During his five seasons at Kent State, Lewis led the Flashes to a 24-31 record, including 19-17 in MAC play. He has also spent time in his career at Nebraska-Omaha, Akron, Eastern Illinois, Bowling Green, and Syracuse.

In early November, Lewis was demoted as Colorado’s offensive coordinator after averaging 32.1 points per game for the Buffaloes. Once that move was made by Sanders, many believed Lewis’s time in Boulder would be likely coming to an end. That has now become a reality as he takes over the Mountain West program.

San Diego State is coming off a 4-8 season under Brady Hoke, who chose to retire at the end of the regular season. The Aztecs are just two seasons removed from a 12-win season in 2021 which saw them ranked as high as 19th in the College Football Playoff poll. They also had 10+ win seasons in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2019.

Report states Nebraska’s defensive coordinator interviewed for SDSU job

A recent report has stated that Nebraska’s defensive coordinator has interviewed for a head coaching position.

A recent report has stated that Nebraska’s defensive coordinator has interviewed for a head coaching position. The San Diego Union-Tribune has reported Tony White has interviewed for the San Diego State Aztec head coach opening.

This season was White’s first season at Nebraska after having spent the past three seasons at Syracuse. In 12 games this season, the Huskers ranked 14th in total defense, surrendering 303.5 yards per game. White’s defense also ranks 17th in scoring defense, giving up an average of 18.25 points per game.

The report states that SDSU hopes to have a head coach by the middle of December.

When he spoke to the media two weeks ago, SDSU athletic director John David Wicker said he planned to have a new coach named by mid-December. However, that time frame leaves less than a week before the NCAA’s early signing period, which is Dec. 20-22.

White has a history with San Diego State, having coached cornerbacks from 2009-2017. He learned under former SDSU head coach Rocky Long. The Aztecs are looking for a new coach after Brady Hoke announced his retirement following the conclusion of the 2023 season.

Odds: San Jose State (-690)

With a 5-5 record, San Jose State has an opportunity to become bowl eligible with a win over San Diego State on Saturday night. In Week 11, San Jose State is coming off a massive 42-18 upset win over Fresno State. That win kept San Jose State alive in their bowl eligibility quest and it ruined Fresno State’s New Year’s Six bowl bid.

San Jose State has the momentum to get past a struggling San Diego State team. Earlier this week, San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke announced that he will retire at the end of the season. The Aztecs have added motivation to pick up at least one win for their head coach in the final two games of the regular season.

San Jose State’s Offense Needs To Produce Similar Results

San Jose State was on a roll against Fresno State in Week 11. The Spartans will need to replicate that production in Week 12. For that to happen, quarterback Chevan Cordeiro will have to lead the charge on offense. Against Fresno State, Cordeiro passed for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Kairee Robinson rushed for 200 yards and two touchdowns. If San Jose State can find a way to balance its passing and rushing attacks, it could be another blowout win for the Spartans.

Prediction

San Jose State 37, San Diego State 20

If San Jose State can score points, San Diego State’s offense will have a hard time keeping up. The only way San Diego State can win is if it is a game that does not exceed the 30-point threshold. During San Jose State’s current five-game winning streak, the Aztecs have scored at least 30 points. Expect another high-scoring game from the Spartans.
