Alabama assistant Ryan Pannone emerging as a finalist for Fresno State HC job

Fresno State basketball zeroing in on Alabama assistant Ryan Pannone as next head coach

After just one season with the Alabama Crimson Tide basketball program, assistant coach Ryan Pannone appears as if he may be on the move again as he has been tabbed as a finalist for the Fresno State head coaching vacancy, according to Mike Rodak of 247Sports. With the March Madness tournament still going on and the team preparing for the Final Four, I doubt we hear an announcement from either side soon but it appears as if he is their top target.

Pannone spent the first part of his career bouncing around overseas as an assistant before getting his first big break with the New Orleans Pelicans. After less than a year there, Pannone took one look at Tuscaloosa and saw all of the opportunities that [autotag]Nate Oats[/autotag] assistants were getting and decided to follow that path.

Despite probably not being the most talented roster Alabama has ever had, it is their first-ever team to make a Final Four appearance. A large part of that success can be attributed to Oats as well as his entire coaching staff.

At only 39 years of age, Pannone is a hot young name in the coaching world and is the exact type of energy that is needed in this new name, image, likeness and transfer portal era. Especially when reviving a program like Fresno State that finished 12-21 a season ago.

Saints hire Keith Williams as their new wide receivers coach

The Saints hired Keith Williams as their new wide receivers coach. Before coming to the NFL, he was a personal trainer for All-Pros like Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill:

The New Orleans Saints have a wide receivers coach: Keith Williams announced on social media that he has accepted the job on Klint Kubiak’s offensive coaching staff under head coach Dennis Allen. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that he received a two-year contract with the team.

Williams previously worked as the Baltimore Ravens assistant receivers coach. But before that, he spent two decades working as a personal trainer for All-Pro wide receivers like Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill. He’s also coached at the college level, having worked with Adams (and Saints quarterback Derek Carr) at Fresno State.

So he has a strong resume. The Saints have a number of young wide receivers for him to develop in Chris Olave, A.T. Perry, and exclusive rights free agent Rashid Shaheed, who is expected to return on a one-year deal before becoming eligible for a long-term extension in 2025. It looks like the Saints have filled all their vacancies on offense, but stay tuned for confirmation and any late additions to the coaching staff.

Saints targeting Ravens assistant Keith Williams for WR coach

The Saints are targeting Ravens assistant Keith Williams for their wide receivers coach; he coached Derek Carr at Fresno State and previously worked at Tulane

Here’s another name to watch as the New Orleans Saints fill out their offensive coaching staff. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that the Saints are interviewing Baltimore Ravens assistant Keith Williams for their wide receivers coach opening, looking to replace Kodi Burns.

Williams has spent the last three years in Baltimore, initially starting out as the team’s pass game specialist before focusing his work on the receiving corps. But he’s been in the game a long time. Before coming to the NFL he coached at Nebraska, Tulane, and Fresno State, working closely with Derek Carr and Davante Adams early in their college careers.

So he’d obviously have some familiarity with Carr and new insight to bring to the coaching staff. We’ll see if the Saints are able to seal the deal and pull Williams away from Baltimore, so stay tuned. Klint Kubiak has checked most of the boxes in filling out his new-look offensive coaching staff, with a receivers coach being the last major spot to fill.

Alabama football projected to have shocking bowl opponent in 2023

You’ll never guess who Alabama is projected to play in the 2023 bowl season

When you think of college football bowl season, it’s almost been a guarantee for the past 15 years that the Crimson Tide will be in contention for the national championship. With one loss on their resume through just five weeks, Alabama is certainly on the outside looking in. However, if the Tide can win out and win the SEC Championship their spot will be nearly guaranteed.

This year, it is a wide-open race with no team truly separating themselves from the pack. The PAC-12 has been the best conference so far this season with USC, Oregon, and Washington all ranked inside the top ten. As we get deeper into conference play, we will really begin to separate the pretenders from the contenders and even I am not 100% certain which side the Tide are on in 2023.

Erick Smith of USA TODAY does not believe that the Tide will make the playoffs as he released his 2023 bowl projections from this season. Smith projects that the four teams competing in the College Football Playoffs will be Michigan, Florida State, Georgia and Texas.

Smith has lower expectations for the Tide as he projects them to meet up with Fresno State in the Peach Bowl. A win over the Aggies this weekend on the road this weekend would be a monumental step towards the playoffs.

Alabama just misses CFP in latest bowl game projections

ESPN’s latest bowl game predictions has Alabama just outside the College Football Playoff

Alabama football’s goal of reaching the College Football Playoff hit a bit of a road bump in Week 2 due to a double-digit home loss to Texas. The Crimson Tide’s not out of the running to make it, however. The latest set of projections have the Tide just outside the reach of the playoff.

Mark Schlabach and Kyle Bonagura of ESPN recently put together Bowl game projections (subscription required) ahead of the Week 6 slate of college football matchups.

While they both have the Crimson Tide in the Peach Bowl, they have very different opponents in their predictions.

Bonagura has the Tide facing Fresno State, while Schlabach has Alabama taking on Penn State. One of these matchups surely generates more interest than the other.

With plenty of big-time matchups left for Alabama and the teams ahead of the Tide in the rankings, a lot will change in these bowl game predictions.

USA TODAY Sports currently projects Alabama to face Fresno State in the Peach Bowl

USA TODAY predicts Alabama to play Fresno State this bowl season

Despite a rocky start to the 2023 season, the Alabama Crimson Tide is still very much alive in the hopes of a national championship. The team looked poor in the first few games of the year, but they currently stand at 3-1 with a 1-0 record in the SEC. In other words, Alabama still controls its own destiny in regards to a playoff berth.

This year, people felt like the Rebels had a strong chance to compete in the division, but ultimately the Tide put a stop to that in Week 1 of conference play as they beat Ole Miss 24-10 this past Saturday. Alabama once again seems like the favorite to make the trip to Atlanta and compete for a tenth SEC Championship since Nick Saban took over.

While I still hold a lot of optimism for the Crimson Tide’s season, it’s not shared by everyone in the media. Erick Smith of USA TODAY predicts that Alabama will face Fresno State in the Peach Bowl. While a Peach Bowl certainly isn’t the worst thing in the world, I don’t think many Alabama fans would be too happy to see the Tide squaring off with Fresno State during bowl season when 2023 was filled with aspirations of a national title.

Smith projects that the four teams that will be competing in the playoff will be Georgia, Michigan, Texas and Florida State. It’s interesting to see that the PAC 12, widely regarded as the best conference in the country, does not have any representatives.

Saints practice squad signs former Bills RB Jordan Mims, Jake Haener’s college teammate

The Saints practice squad signed former Bills RB Jordan Mims, Jake Haener’s college teammate at Fresno State. He’s one of the most prolific runners in school history:

This is cool: the New Orleans Saints are signing former Buffalo Bills running back Jordan Mims to their practice squad, as first reported by Saints News Network’s John Hendrix. Before he joined the Bills, Mims was college teammates with Saints fourth-round draft pick Jake Haener at Fresno State.

And he left Fresno State as one of the most prolific running backs in school history. Mims ranked fifth in all-purpose yards, fourth in rushing yards, third in touchdown runs, and second in rushing attempts. He also ranked second in total touchdowns (45). Not a bad resume despite his poor pre-draft athletic performance in combine drills.

So why was he available? Mims wasn’t given many opportunities in Buffalo’s preseason games before being sidelined by a concussion, but he gained 47 rushing yards on just 11 attempts. He also caught 4 receptions for another 45 receiving yards. Mims has extensive experience in pass protection at the college level (256 snaps in five years), so if he can make the most of his opportunities when his number is called he could hang around for a while.

Jake Haener continues to build in second preseason appearance as Saints top Chargers, 22-17

Jake Haener built upon his first performance in the 22-17 win over the Chargers, looking more comfortable and poised in the pocket | @crissy_froyd

There’s no question that New Orleans Saints rookie quarterback Jake Haener had some ups and downs in his first preseason appearance.

In team’s 26-24 win over the Kansas City, he opened up his preseason debut with three consecutive incompletions and an interception in an unsightly fashion as he had to overcome his rookie jitters.

There were less of those in Sunday night’s 22-17 road victory over the Los Angeles Chargers, though, as Haener seemed to pick up right where he left off as a quarterback who was commended for his moxie and ability to come in the clutch when he helped seal the deal with a successful, 76-yard two-minute drill capped off with a touchdown.

Rather than open the contest with some blunders, Haener came out of the gate swinging with a 55-yard strike on the move to former LSU pass-catcher Jontre Kirklin.

The same improvisation ability and ability to make decisions on the fly that was seen in the first game was only built upon as Haener was able to show a broader range of what he was able to do with one NFL appearance under his belt.

Haener was sidelined early on when he entered the game in the first half, evaluated for a concussion after taking a rough hit, but he bounced back quickly with the toughness Bulldogs fans are all too familiar with as one of Haener’s biggest college career moments was when he played through a lower-body injury to upset No. 13 UCLA, 40-37 in 2021.

Another one of his brightest moments of the game came on a well-placed ball  sent to Shaq Davis for 18 yards and a third-down conversion.

Haener looked more decisive, poised and confident in this matchup, something that was to be expected as it’s heavily discounted in the modern-day that quarterbacks do indeed take time to develop with a steep NFL transition, regardless of the heights of their college achievements.

That’s not to say Haener did not have a handful of misfires with some rookie mistakes, but they were fewer and he was in a much more notable rhythm in his second time around.

The Fresno State alum finished out the contest 11-of-17 passing for 118 yards. He and the Saints will look to maintain an undefeated preseason record as they take on the Houston Texans at 7 p.m. CT on Sunday in the Caesars Superdome.

Evaluating Jake Haener’s performance in first Saints preseason appearance

Rookie quarterbacks have to learn on the job, but it’s telling when they recover quickly. Evaluating Jake Haener’s performance in first Saints preseason appearance | @crissy_froyd

Jake Haener has always been an underdog who seems to attract those late to the party when he’s presented a stage to demand attention. That was the case for the rookie quarterback in his first New Orleans Saints preseason game, but it’s just the latest performance from him.

The Senior Bowl was one of those instances, as the former Mountain West star showed to be far and away the best quarterback at the event between his improvisation ability as he effortlessly made plays out of structure, ball placement, accuracy, leadership and football IQ.

Earlier in the week, Haener was afforded a much larger venue in the Caesars Superdome in the Saints’ 26-24 preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Three consecutive incompletions over his first two offensive series with an interception caused by an overthrow didn’t exactly give the best impression, but despite some classic rookie stumbles, Haener began to settle in.

Playing out the entire final two quarters of the contest with second and third-stringers, Haener got back to himself in the final minutes of the game with a seven-play, 76-yard drive in which Haener showed full command in a high-pressure, two-minute drill type of situation.

It culminated in a two-yard rollout touchdown pass to running back Ellis Merriweather that played a critical role in allowing the Saints to secure the win, after the Chiefs pulled ahead while trailing by a large margin, threatening to take the contest all together.

So, what’s to make of this? A little bit of something, yet a whole lot of nothing at the same time.

For one, Haener’s intangibles and raw potential are what we thought they would be. But there’s a key word there — raw. In a world where instant gratification is highly sought-after — something that definitely exists in sports — it’s important to note that the transition to the NFL is an incredibly difficult one for even the best of quarterbacks.

“Early on I thought he was a little erratic, but I thought as he settled down, he got better,” Saints head coach Dennis Allen said after the game.

Allen continued, “He has a little moxie to him and when the game was on the line, he got us down the field and put points on the board. It was disappointing on the two-point play that we snapped the ball early and don’t get a chance to at least try to execute in that situation. I thought that was my one takeaway is that we had too many self-inflicted wounds – not with the first groups, but as we got into the second and third waves, we had some self-inflicted wounds that we have to clean up.”

There’s going to be a learning curve for Haener and every other rookie quarterback across the NFL, and it should also be taken into account that he’s playing alongside backups and behind the reserve offensive line.

Look for Haener to continue to build upon his performance as he continues to work on decision-making at the next level when the Saints continue the preseason with a matchup against the Houston Texans on Sunday at 7 p.m. CT in the Caesars Superdome.

What pre-draft scouting reports said about Saints fourth-round pick Jake Haener

What pre-draft scouting reports said about Saints fourth-round pick Jake Haener, the Fresno State QB With a gutsy style of play:

The New Orleans Saints may have gotten someone special in Jake Haener — their fourth-round pick out of Fresno State has a lot of fans, which is abundantly clear in the scouting reports written about him before the 2023 NFL draft. Between his impressive leadership qualities and sky-high production on the field, there’s a lot to like. Here’s what draft analysts from around the NFL media landscape had to say about Haener after studying his game tape:
