The Jets waived RB Austin Walter, OL Isaiah Williams and DB Zane Lewis upon announcing five undrafted free agent signings.

The Jets waived running back Austin Walter, offensive lineman Isaiah Williams and safety Zane Lewis after announcing five undrafted free agent signings.

New York officially announced NC State running back Zonovan Knight, Kent State wide receiver Keshunn Abram, IUP and former Penn State wide receiver Irvin Charles, Middle Tennessee linebacker DQ Thomas and safety Tony Adams as undrafted free agent additions.

Walter appeared in four games for the Jets in 2021, rushing 26 times for 101 yards and a touchdown. He scored his lone touchdown of the season in a win over the Texans and rushed nine times for 38 yards against Houston. Walter also took 14 carries and rushed for 49 yards in a Week 16 loss to the Buccaneers.

Williams was signed by the Jets just before the beginning of last season and spent 2021 bouncing back and forth between the practice squad and the active roster. The 6-foot-3, 296-pound tackle signed a reserve/futures contract with New York in January.

Lewis missed all of 2021 with a torn patellar tendon and sprained ACL suffered in August during joint practices with the Packers. Lewis caught on with the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Air Force in 2020, but never appeared in a regular season game with the team.

Jets place DB Zane Lewis on injured reserve, re-sign backup safety

The Jets placed Zane Lewis on injured reserve and brought back the recently waived Bennett Jackson in a pair of Friday roster moves.

The Jets made a pair of moves in the secondary on Friday, placing safety Zane Lewis on injured reserve and re-signing Bennett Jackson after waiving him on Aug. 17.

Lewis, who was transitioning from cornerback to safety in training camp, tore his patellar tendon and sprained his MCL during Thursday’s joint practice with the Packers. Lewis signed a reserve/future deal with the Jets in January after spending most of 2020 on New York’s practice squad.

Jackson has spent the last two seasons bouncing back and forth between the Jets’ active roster and practice squad. New York originally claimed the New Jersey native off waivers in September 2019, only to waive him two weeks later and re-sign him to the practice squad. Jackson spent two months with the Ravens before returning to the Jets in December 2019.

New York re-signed Jackson in free agency last March, but he failed to make the 53-man roster out of training camp and was once again re-signed to the practice squad. Jackson was promoted to the active roster in November before landing on injured reserve a month later. Jackson re-signed with the Jets again in April before receiving his most recent pink slip from the team.

In his two years with the Jets, Jackson has recorded just two tackles.

Jets claim DB Zane Lewis from Cardinals

On Monday, the Jets claimed undrafted free agent DB Zane Lewis on waivers, the Air Force Academy product has ties to the coaching staff.

The Jets claimed DB Zane Lewis on waivers from Arizona, the team announced Monday.

Lewis signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted free agent out of the Air Force Academy back in May.

Now, Lewis comes to New York already having some familiarity with the coaching staff. He’ll reunite with his former position coach, Chip Vaughn, who is now Gang Green’s assistant defensive backs coach. Vaughn spent two seasons as the Falcons’ secondary coach before accepting a position on Gregg Williams’ defensive coaching staff this past offseason.

At Air Force, Lewis played in 37 games across four seasons. During his senior campaign, Lewis recorded 45 tackles and one interception playing in all 13 games. In addition, Lewis tied for fourth in the nation with 15 passes defended in 2019 and he allowed only 5.0 yards per target in coverage, which ranked in the 93rd percentile among qualified cornerbacks, according to Michael Nania.

Lewis brings a dimension of speed to Gang Green’s secondary, which is evident in his 4.45 40-yard dash time and two career 99-yard interception returns for touchdowns.

New York has yet to announce a corresponding move and with the season just a little under two weeks away, Lewis figures to be a potential practice squad addition.
