Five reasons why Colorado will sneak out of Falcon Stadium with a win

Five reasons CU will find a way to sneak out of Falcon Stadium victorious

The Colorado Buffaloes will be in a strange position on Saturday being a Power Five school that is facing a double-digit line against a Group of Five school.

But, Air Force has the ability to compete against any team in the country due to its offensive attack and because the Falcons are so well coached that they rarely ever make mistakes. The Buffs will have to play a disciplined brand of football if they hope to come away with a win.

For the following five reasons, I believe there’s a chance that Colorado can leave the Springs with a win over Air Force:

Colorado at Air Force: Who the experts are picking

Here’s who the experts are picking for Colorado-Air Force

The Colorado Buffaloes looked rough in their season opener at home against the TCU Horned Frogs. All week, questions have come about which quarterback head coach Karl Dorrell will trot out there to start the next week’s game at Air Force.

Up to this point, Dorrell has said both QBs will likely play again, and the Buffs could be in for another rough game against a tough Air Force team, one which just ran for nearly 600 yards against Northern Iowa in Week 1.

With Week 2 here, the consensus pick is that Air Force will defeat Colorado rather easily.

Read on to check out what three of our favorite college football writers had to say about CU-Air Force.

Troy Calhoun says ‘mutual respect’ exists between Air Force, Colorado

Troy Calhoun shared some kind words about CU

You have to admire the work Troy Calhoun has put into the Air Force Academy over the past 15 years. His Falcons have reached an impressive 11 bowl games under his leadership while winning the Mountain West Mountain  Division twice.

Needless to say, I’m not particularly high on the Buffs going down to Colorado Springs on Saturday.

A couple of weeks ago at the Front Media Huddle, I and a few other reporters caught up with Calhoun to ask him a few questions about his team and what he thinks of CU.

Calhoun shared some very kind words about the University of Colorado and its athletics.

“There’s just so much mutual respect,” Calhoun said. “You think about our flagship university in our state being an AAU school (in a) phenomenal town. The commitment they’ve made in terms of the athletic department, especially to football, that makes you proud to live in this state for their dedication, it really does. And then you bring in the history; I think in the last 40 years, there’s only been about six, seven schools that have played for back-to-back national championships and Colorado is one of them. That’s pretty awesome… If my son or daughter went to school there, I’d be proud.”

Air Force Falcons Preview 2022

The 2021 Falcons were this close to turning a great season into something truly special. The three losses all came by six points or fewer and all could’ve easily have gone the other way.

Everything worked. The rushing offense led the nation, the attack dominated the time of possession battle, and the defense ended up as the statistical best in the Mountain West.

Six starters return on offense and five are back on D, but that doesn’t quite tell the whole story with a slew of key contributors and the program’s ability to fill in the gaps quickly about to shine.

Air Force Falcons Preview 2022: Offense

Run the ball, run the ball, run the ball, and hit the deep pass by taking advantage of defenses that freak out about the run. That’s what Air Force did brilliantly last year, and it’s about to do it all again.

The Falcons were able to dominate on third downs, ran for 328 yards per game, and they averaged a nation-high 22.6 yards per completion. They controlled games, kept the defense off the field, and were great at taking the air out of the ball.

There’s not a whole lot of passing happening, but that’s okay. The job of QB Hazziq Daniels is to hit the open man when he’s got the chance, and he should be able to do that just enough to get by. He’s not all that accurate – he missed half of his passes – but he ran for 736 yards and 11 scores and kept the big mistakes to a minimum.

Leading receiver Brandon Lewis is gone, but he only caught 21 passes. The Falcons have other options to stretch the field and catch that one big pass a game.

It’s all about the ground attack. The Falcons were able to run for 300 yards or more eight times last year with 44 touchdowns and over five yards per carry. Daniels was second on the team in rushing, veteran fullback Brad Roberts is back after leading the way with 1,357 yards and 13 scores, and they’re not alone with a deep group of options behind them.

Three offensive linemen are back with good size and a solid starting five. The depth, though, is lacking and has to develop.

Air Force Falcons Preview 2022: Defense

The defense was helped by the offense, and it will be again. This group was great at getting into the backfield and made a whole lot of plays, but the O that’s great at holding on to the ball gives everyone on the D rest. Five starters are back, but the personnel losses are huge.

Top tackler Tre Bugg is done in the secondary, top lineman Jordan Jackson is gone, and tough-guy tackler Damonte Means has to be replaced. Throw in the loss of safety Corvan Taylor, and the Falcons have to find new difference-makers.

The linebacking corps will be more than fine, but the secondary needs help around safety Trey Taylor – a good-hitting potential all-star talent. All-Mountain West pass rusher Vince Sanford will be a disruptive force, but the tackles and beef up front have to settle into a good rotation.

LSU baseball grabs a talented two-way player from the transfer portal

LSU landed the best two-way player in college baseball in Paul Skenes from Air Force.

Paul Skenes, a catcher/right-handed pitcher from the United States Air Force Academy, announced on Thursday that he will be taking his talents to the Bayou next spring to play for coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers.

The MLB draft is over, so Johnson doesn’t have to worry about losing this guy. As a sophomore last season, Skenes was named a Collegiate Baseball News Preseason First Team All-American, DIBaseball.com Preseason First Team All-American, Baseball America Preseason Third Team All-American, and he was named to Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watchlist.

Skenes lived up to that hype in 2022, finishing as a First Team All-American and earning the John Olerud Award as the best two-way player in college baseball. He pitched a total of 85.2 innings last season and finished the year with a 10-3 record, 96 strikeouts, 30 walks and a 2.73 ERA.

He appeared as a hitter in 51 games and finished with an average of .314 with 38 RBI, 10 doubles and 13 homers. He was the Shohei Ohtani of the United States Air Force. He was their F-22 fighter. He was Maverick from ‘Top Gun.’ I can’t wait to see how Johnson uses him next year.

Phil Steele’s full 2022 preseason college football top 40 rankings

What does Phil Steele’s preseason top 40 look like? Which programs are the favorites to reach the College Football Playoff?

Phil Steele is one of the top voices in all of college football. His annual college football preview magazine is something fans look forward to every year.

Now, we get a look at his preseason top 40 college football rankings. The Iowa Hawkeyes are inside his top 20 after winning the Big Ten West in 2021. How many other Big Ten teams find their way inside the top 40?

According to Phil Steele, seven Big Ten teams will finish inside the top 40. Is one of them perhaps his predicted national champion? Let’s take a look below at how Phil Steele projects all of the top 40 to shake out in 2022.

Top 17 Big Ten expansion candidates for consideration

The Big Ten expansion possibilities are fun to think about. Notre Dame, Oregon, and the Army-Navy Game?

There are officially no limits on schools that can be considered expansion candidates for the Big Ten after extending invitations to join to USC and UCLA. With the Big Ten set to welcome the two iconic Pac-12 programs in 2024, the future of the Big Ten has never looked more open and there are so many directions the Big Ten could go next.

The Big Ten has made it a point to focus on schools that are members of the Association of American Universities when exploring potential expansion candidates. USC and UCLA are each members of the AAU, for example. But membership in the AAU is not necessarily a major deal-breaker, as is the case for Nebraska. Nebraska was voted into the conference when it was an AAU member, but the school lost its AAU affiliation months after heading to the Big Ten.

There are a number of AAU members not included in this list as they are current members or future members of the SEC. Of all the conferences out there, the SEC is likely the one conference that stands the least chance of having a school leave for another conference. The SEC is home to AAU members Florida, Missouri, and Texas A&M and Texas will soon join them.

This list of potential expansion targets for the Big Ten is based off the current membership of the AAU with one very notable exception. We may as well get that exception out of the way right now…

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Air Force Falcons Offense 3 Things To Know

Once again, Air Force went Air Force with one of the nation’s best rushing attacks. It all worked, finishing second in the nation in time of possession, second in rushing, and for the purposes of making it all work, being third in passing efficiency was a really big deal.

Only four starters are back, but they’re the right ones.

Having a veteran O line isn’t a given with the Falcons, and three starters are gone. However, tackle Parker Ferguson and guard Nolan Laufenberg are killers on the left side to build around – they’re both going to be all-stars – but there are some big losses with two All-Mountain West stars gone in tackle Scott Hattok and center Connor Vikupitz.

The backfield has the two main parts. Senior Donald Hammond only hit 50% of his passes, but he averaged 12 yards per throw with 13 touchdowns and six picks. He also led the team with 13 rushing scores to go along with 553 yards.

Also returning is leading rusher Kadin Remsberg, a quick 5-9, 195-pounder who tore off 1,050 yards and eight scores. 6-3, 190-pound Timothy Jackson isn’t the normal fullback type, but he was able to pound for six yards per carry, rushing for 745 yards and six scores.

– It’s actually sort of a big deal for Air Force to lose its top receivers. Geraud Sanders and Benjamin Waters combined for 52 catches for all 14 touchdowns, with the leading returning target – senior Ben Peterson – coming up with three total grabs.

As always, the receivers are 6-2ish big, the top ones will average over 20 yards per catch, and they can all block. Expect 6-4 sophomore Jake Spiewak to rise up into a key role.

Which teams has Texas never beat that they have history with?

Which college teams has Texas played but never defeated? There are seven total and we dive into each one that has evaded a Texas win.

The Texas Longhorns football program is one of the more storied in all of college football history. The beginning of the program dates all the way back to 1893 and they are one of seven programs with over 900 wins. Well, 916 to be exact.

In fact the Texas Longhorns are tied with Alabama for the third most wins in college football history. A team the Longhorns hold a winning record against going 7-1-1 in nine meetings. Those two teams will meet up for a home-and-home series in 2022 and 2023. Two schools that have a combined 1,832 wins and 21 national championships.

Despite having 916 wins all-time, there are still a handful of teams that the Longhorns have played and never beaten. Using Winsipedia, we compiled the list of teams that the Longhorns haven’t beaten in their 126-year history. We start with three teams from the ACC.
