LSU among the final 4 for Appalachian State basketball transfer Tre’Von Spillers

Tre’Von Spillers earned First Team All-Sun Belt honors in his lone season with the Mountaineers.

The Tigers took some noticeable strides in Year 2 under [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag]. They finished with a winning record and improved their SEC win total from two games to nine this year, earning a bid to the NIT in the process.

But the team still wasn’t in the tournament mix, and after two transfer-heavy offseasons in Baton Rouge, McMahon is likely to hit the portal hard once again this time around.

LSU is already making progress in that regard. Over the weekend, it cracked the final four for Appalachian State basketball transfer [autotag]Tre’Von Spillers[/autotag], alongside conference foe Arkansas as well as Wake Forest and UAB.

A Charleston, South Carolina, native, Spillers joined the Mountaineers this season as a JUCO transfer and played a major role. He averaged 12.8 points and 8.9 rebounds while earning First Team All-Sun Belt honors.

The 6-foot-7 forward would be a nice wing addition for the Tigers, who have already landed a backcourt transfer in Kansas State guard [autotag]Cam Carter[/autotag].

Duke now top ACC team at No. 6 in latest D1Baseball poll, the highest rank in school history

Duke ascends to No. 6 in latest D1Baseball poll after a series victory over top-ranked Wake Forest, the highest ranking in program history.

Duke’s series win over the then-No. 1 Wake Forest Demon Deacons sent some pretty sizable ripples through the rest of the collegiate baseball landscape.

The series win vindicated Duke as a team that everyone should be cognizant of going forward, and it also sent a message to the rest of the ACC that things will not be a breeze for Wake Forest to just coast to a regular-season title.

Duke made the trip from Durham, NC, to Winston-Salem this past weekend and took two of three from the previously top-ranked Demon Deacons. That win had a massive effect on the latest D1Baseball poll.

Duke is now the highest-ranked ACC team in the country, having leaped from 12th to 6th, which marks the highest ranking in program history by D1Baseball.

Duke had a 3-1 week in total, which started with a 28-2 dismantling of the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the middle of the week before they made their trip to take on Wake Forest to open ACC play.

Arkansas is now the No. 1-ranked team in the country. Wake Forest dropped six spots to seventh.

Elsewhere in the ACC, Clemson remains steady at 10th after another undefeated week of action. NC State moved up one spot to No. 13 in the newest poll. UNC also moved up one place, going from 16th to 15th. Virginia suffered two losses to the Miami Hurricanes last week and fell four spots from 13th to 17th.

In their latest rankings, Baseball America ranked Duke No. 3, and Perfect Game ranked the Blue Devils No. 5.

The Blue Devils will continue its journey to ascend into the top five with two midweek games against Rider starting Tuesday. They follow that up with another top-10 matchup as Clemson gets set to come to town to start a three-game set on Friday.

After series win over Akron, Duke remains steady at No.12 in D1Baseball Top 25

Duke remains at No. 12 in D1Baseball ahead of week that features five games. Three of those games are against top ranked Wake Forest.

Despite losing its first game this past weekend, Chris Pollard’s baseball team is a crisp 10-1 and remains the no. 12 team in the latest D1Baseball poll released Monday morning.

D1Baseball released its top 25 this week, with no movement at the top as every team in the top 14 remained the same from last week’s poll. There are still six ACC schools in. the top 25, with Wake Forest pacing the country at number one. Clemson is still the 10th-ranked team in the country after they went 3-0 last week with two big wins over their biggest rivals, the South Carolina Gamecocks. Much like Duke, Virginia suffered its first loss last week, yet they remain at 13. NC State went an impressive 5-0 and remains steady at 14. The Tarheels of North Carolina were the only ACC team to slide as they fell one spot to 17th despite going 5-0 last week themselves.

Duke has two mid-week games this week against Appalachian State and Georgetown before the Blue Devils make their first proper road trip this upcoming weekend to Winston-Salem to take on the top-ranked Demon Deacons to kickstart off conference play.

Duke was 1-2 in their home series versus Wake Forest last year, with both losses to Wake Forest being by two runs apiece, sandwiched between an 8-1 win.

Time for a bounce back: Some Sooners on offense to keep an eye on vs. Tulsa

After a poor showing on offense against SMU, we’ll be looking at these Sooners to have better games or get more playing time.

Oklahoma’s performance on offense against SMU was head-scratching. The playcalling felt disjointed, especially after the first quarter. Poor blocking was the main culprit, but it also felt very conservative.

Whether that was by design, it needs to be better.

The entire offense needs to be better. The blocking took a step back after dominating Arkansas State. The running backs weren’t particularly explosive or impactful until later in the game. The receivers were essentially a non-factor outside of [autotag]Andrel Anthony[/autotag] and a late fourth-quarter touchdown catch from [autotag]Jalil Farooq[/autotag].

This Saturday will give Oklahoma one more tune-up before they embark on a journey to start their Big 12 schedule. After this week’s matchup with Tulsa, the Sooners will go on the road again to face Cincinnati. The Sooners will want to feel better about their offensive performance before making the trip in week 4.

With a unit that struggled against SMU, there are a number of candidates in need of bounce-back performances. Here are the three players we’ll be watching closely on Saturday.

25 best college football records in the last 10 years

Here are the top 25 records in college football since 2013. Are you surprised by any of these?

As much as you may not like to admit it, the 2013 college football season was a decade ago, and a lot has happened in the sport since then. Florida State stormed its way up through the rankings with a Heisman Trophy winner in Jameis Winston to win the final BCS national championship in history before the sport changed over to the new College Football Playoff in 2014. But the more time passed, some things seemed to be the same.

Alabama continued to dominate more often than not. Ohio State racked up more wins among Big Ten teams than anyone. And the top Group of 5 contenders typically came form the same group. But what schools have had the most success in the win column over the past decade as we begin to prepare for the 2023 season? The answer is not at all surprising, but the order in how the top 25 teams rank may give you a few surprises once you look through the records. It can also give you a reminder that while the past couple of seasons may have been great for some, the past decade saw things even out a little bit here and there.

Here is a look at the best records among FBS college football programs since the start of the 2013 season up through the end of the 2022 season. The records referenced are sourced from Team Rankings.

James Madison overcomes 25-point deficit, shocks Appalachian State

James Madison shut down Appalachian State after falling behind by 25

Appalachian State was well on its way to a victory over James Madison on Saturday.

And the Mountaineers weren’t.

The Dukes trailed by 25 points in the second quarter but scored the last 29 points of the game to down the Mountaineers, 32-28.

Kaelon Black’s 4-yard touchdown run for the Dukes capped the comeback with 10:36 remaining.

Appalachian State had 28 points with 6:10 left in the second quarter. The Mountaineers did not score again.

Appalachian State’s (2-2, 1-1) final drive stalled when Chase Brice threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-9 with 49 seconds left.

In a college football coincidence, James Madison had a come-from-behind, 35-32 win on Sept. 20, 2008, when the teams last met.

Incredible call as Appalachian State staggers Troy with Hail Mary

Appalachian State wins on an incredible Hail Mary

Appalachian State played host to ESPN’s “College GameDay” show before facing Troy on Saturday.

The school that took down Texas A&M in College Station appeared as if it was going to be upset … until “Miracle on the Mountain Part II.”

Chase Brice had one chance with two seconds left in the game and the Mountaineers were down 28-26.

Brice took the snap and heaved a pass that seemed to float forever before coming down. It was deflected into the hands of Christian Horn, who still had to find his way to the end zone.

Horn managed to stay composed and headed for paydirt.

The improbable touchdown gave the Mountaineers a 32-28 victory.

This is the most fun and thrilling team in college football.

The Mountaieers lost by 2 to North Carolina in a game that saw 124 points, went to Texas A&M and upset the Aggies, and now pulled off the Hail Mary.

“Don’t you give up on these Mountaineers. It is great to be a Mountaineer.”

Another angle of the miracle play:

Sooners remain steady at No. 5 in newest CBS Sports college football rankings

Oklahoma comes in at No. 5 in CBS Sports’ latest top 25 power rankings after a weekend full of historic upsets.

Oklahoma has started the season 2-0. Despite a rocky start against a scrappy Kent State team, they made it out of their battle on Saturday night undefeated. Other Top 25 teams can’t say the same after suffering historic defeats to Group of Five schools this weekend. Texas A&M lost to Appalachian State, and Notre Dame was upset by Marshall.

Notre Dame’s season as a College Football Playoff contender is all but over after going 0-2 right out the gate.

CBS Sports’ latest power rankings took into account what also transpired in Austin. Better yet, how it transpired as Alabama narrowly escaped giving Texas their biggest win since their National Championship win over the USC Trojans.

With Bama playing the Longhorns so closely, CBS Sports named Georgia their No. 1 team.

That close loss raised a few eyebrows, providing a glimpse at what Texas can do if fully healthy. Simultaneously, it may have highlighted some issues with Alabama this year.

Alabama slides to number two while Ohio State and Michigan slot in at third and fourth above Oklahoma, who is fifth.

The Sooners remain the only Big 12 team in the Top 10, with Oklahoma State sitting at No. 11. Baylor dropped from 9th to 18th after a road loss at BYU. Texas entered the Top 25 rankings from number 28 after their valiant effort against the Crimson Tide. They are now ranked at no. 22.

Oklahoma takes its show on the road against a Nebraska team looking for anything positive. In Brent Venables’ first true road game as a head coach, the Sooners will have to be ready in all facets to make it back to Norman undefeated.

Johnny Manziel for the win after Texas A&M is stunned

Johnny Manziel with a classic tweet after Texas A&M fell to Appalachian State

Give Johnny Manziel credit, he still has perfect timing.

After sixth-ranked Texas A&M lost to Appalachian State on Saturday in College Station, the Aggies’ Heisman Trophy winner in 2012, took to Twitter and delivered a stinging zing.

Manziel was at the opening win against Sam Houston State with someone else the Aggies could have used Saturday.

Manziel knows how to disguise himself, so maybe it is something Texas A&M should consider. …

Appalachian State staggers Texas A&M in College Station

Appalachian State stuns sixth-ranked Texas A&M

September 10, 2022, goes down as a day major college football programs in the Lone Star State will rue playing opponents that began with the letter “A.”

Top-ranked Alabama went into Austin and downed Texas. Hours later, Appalachian State — yes, those Mountaineers — paid a visit to College Station and jarred Texas A&M, 17-14.

This would be the same school that went to Michigan 15 years ago, and left more than 100,000 in disbelief as the Mountaineers won 32-30 downing the then-fifth ranked Wolverines.

The Aggies came into this game ranked sixth and had a chance to tie the contest in the fourth quarter but a field-goal attempt was flubbed with an awful kick.

Appalachian State then took the football and ran over Texas A&M’s defense.

Camerun Peoples — a great first name for a running back — sealed the deal with a 48-yard run on the final drive.

Appalachian State had 180 yards rushing and limited Texas A&M to 9 first downs and less than 200 yards of total offense.

The difference came off the foot of a kicker, who made his first 3-pointer in college football.

The victory comes a week after the Mountaineers scored 40 points in the fourth quarter against North Carolina but lost 63-61 when a 2-point conversion failed.

Of course, the missed field goal conjures nightmarish memories for Michigan fans, who saw Appalachian State block a Wolverines field goal attempt in 2007 for a 32-30 victory.
