Jay Johnson gives an update on Brady Neal’s injury status for LSU baseball

Jay Johnson said Brady Neal has been playing through a shoulder injury that he aggravated over the weekend.

[autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] has seen a lot of playing time for LSU this season from behind the dish.

The sophomore catcher from Tallahassee, Florida, has played in 33 games so far for the Tigers, and after starting out hitting pretty well at the plate, his production has fallen off.

Starting with the Vanderbilt series, Neal is 3-for-19 (.158) from the plate. That has led to a lot of people wondering what is going on with Neal. Today, LSU head coach [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] said that Neal has been dealing with a shoulder injury and he re-aggravated it against Missouri last weekend.

LSU is blessed with a plethora of talented catchers as the Tigers have three guys who could be the No. 1 guy at most other schools. [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag], [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] and Neal all have the talent to be starting catchers at any school in the country.

We have entered the back half of the season and LSU is fighting for a spot in the SEC tournament so it’s all hands on deck for the Tigers right now. Hopefully, Neal will heal sooner rather than later.

LSU’s Gage Jump named SEC Pitcher of the Week

Gage Jump was absolutely dominant in LSU’s Game 1 run-rule win over Missouri.

The LSU baseball team finally got over the hump in SEC play this weekend.

Though it took a decisive Game 3 to clinch things, the Tigers won their first conference series of the season on the road against Missouri. They started things off with a huge performance in Game 1 with [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] on the mound, winning 12-1 via run rule.

For his efforts, Jump was named the SEC Pitcher of the Week on Monday. In the Game 1 win, he tossed seven innings while allowing just three hits and a run. He walked a single batter while striking out 14, and that performance ultimately paved the way for LSU to capture their first league series victory.

Jump, a transfer from UCLA, has become LSU’s Friday night starter and one of the few reliable arms among a group of pitchers that have struggled at times this season.

After a midweek game against Nicholls, Jump should take the mound once again on Friday as the Tigers return home to host Auburn at The Box.

In the top of the sixth inning, [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] walked with the bases loaded to extend the LSU lead to 3-2. In the top of the seventh inning, [autotag]Ashton Larson[/autotag] hit a solo homer to extend the lead to 4-2.

Late LSU baseball rally falls short as Tigers drop Game 2 to Missouri

LSU’s first conference series win will have to wait at least one more day.

LSU’s first conference series win will have to wait at least one more day.

After run-ruling Missouri on Friday, the LSU Tigers were not so fortunate Saturday as Missouri won Game 2 by an 8-7 margin despite a ninth-inning rally from LSU, which fell to 4-13 in SEC play.

Missouri scored first in the bottom of the first inning with a ground-rule double for an RBI and an error that led to another run to make it 2-0 Missouri early. In the top of the second inning, LSU got one of those runs back when [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1.

Missouri answered that run in the bottom of the second as they extended their lead to 3-1. Both teams settled in and the game got quiet until the bottom of the fifth inning. Missouri scored four runs to extend their lead to 7-1 and chased [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] from the mound.

Holman was pulled from the game after 4.2 innings of work. He gave up six runs on six hits, four strikeouts, and two walks. [autotag]Aiden Moffett[/autotag] entered the game for LSU and Missouri scored one of those four runs against him that inning.

LSU started trying to claw their way back in the top of the sixth inning with a solo homer from [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag]. Then [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit a two-run shot in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 7-4.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Missouri scored another run to increase their lead to 8-4. In the top of the ninth, [autotag]Stephen Milam[/autotag] hit an RBI double to cut the lead to 8-5. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] then hit a two-run homer to cut the lead to 8-7 with only one out.

That is as close as LSU would get to making a comeback as they lost Game 2 8-7. The rubber match of the series will be played on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.

LSU baseball gets back in the win column against McNeese on Tuesday night

After falling out of the baseball polls for the first time in a year, the Tigers bounced back with a blowout win on Tuesday.

After falling out of the baseball polls for the first time in a year, the Tigers looked to get some good news. They got just that with a 16-0 victory over McNeese.

[autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] got the scoring started in the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer. [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] followed that with an RBI single and [autotag]Stephen Milam[/autotag] cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple to give LSU a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second inning, [autotag]Mac Bingham[/autotag] was credited with two RBI via a bunt single to increase the lead to 7-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, Jones homered once again. This time it was a two-run shot that extended the lead to 9-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, [autotag]Jake Brown[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to right field to increase the LSU lead to 11-0. [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] was then hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score another run and a wild pitch resulted in [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] scoring to give LSU a 13-0 lead. Jones then hit his third homer of the night as his three-run bomb gave LSU a 16-0 lead.

LSU will be back in action on Friday night when they take on No. 4 Tennessee in Knoxville.

LSU baseball barely a tournament team based on latest field of 64 projections

The Tigers are among the last four teams in, according to On3’s latest projection.

The Tigers started off their weekend series against Vanderbilt on a promising note with a 10-6 win in Game 1 — though they nearly squandered a 9-0 lead. In Game 2, they held a one-run lead entering the eighth inning before a Commodores rally erased it en route to a win.

Then, the LSU baseball team suffered a run-rule loss on Saturday, its third such loss in a Game 3 in SEC play, as it moved to 0-4 in SEC series.

It’s been a disappointing go of it for a team that began the season ranked in the top five, and now even a berth in the NCAA tournament is very much in question.

In the latest field of 64 projections from On3’s Jonathan Wagner, the Tigers are one of the last four teams in. They’re a projected three-seed in the Charlottesville Regional, with top-seeded Virginia projected as the No. 9 national seed.

Virginia just finished a series victory over UNC, but finish just on the outside of a top eight seed in our Field of 64. This range of hosts is very tight, though, so Virginia has a legitimate path to a top eight. They are joined by Kansas State, LSU and Columbia in Charlottesville. LSU, the defending national champions, finds themselves on the bubble and in serious danger at midseason after a 3-9 start to SEC play.

As Wagner said, this team is far from guaranteed a spot in the field, and another series loss this weekend at Tennessee would likely put Jay Johnson’s team on the outside looking in.

LSU baseball suffers another Game 3 run-rule loss as Vanderbilt takes series

The Commodores run-ruled LSU on Saturday to take the series.

LSU had two chances to get their first conference series win of the season after winning against Vanderbilt on Thursday evening. They could not make it happen as a late rally won Game 2 for Vandy and then the Commodores run-ruled LSU today to take the series.

The Commodores plated five runs in the first three innings before LSU was able to respond. [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] scored due to a throwing error in the bottom of the third inning as LSU would cut the lead to 5-1.

Vandy went on to score two runs in the top of the fourth, one run in the top of the fifth, and three runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 11-1. [autotag]Javen Coleman[/autotag] was charged with three runs, [autotag]Will Hellmers[/autotag] was charged with two runs, [autotag]Cam Johnson[/autotag] was charged with two runs, [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] was charged with one run, and [autotag]Jaden Noot[/autotag] was charged with three runs today.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to cut the Commodore lead to 11-3.

Vandy scored a run in the top of the seventh and the eighth inning to win the game via run rule 13-3. LSU will be back in action on Tuesday as the Tigers take on McNeese at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Paul Skenes shines in Triple-A start for Indianapolis Indians

Paul Skenes seems to be on the fast track to the majors.

The No. 1 pick in the [autotag]2023 MLB draft[/autotag], [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], made another start for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate, the [autotag]Indianapolis Indians[/autotag], as they took on the Memphis Redbirds and Skenes looked great.

Skenes finished the game after three innings of work where he gave up zero runs on only one hit with six strikeouts and a walk. As you can see in the video below, Skenes was doing what he always does. He was throwing in the triple digits easily and his fastball was hard to hit for Memphis.

Skenes has now made two starts this season for Indianapolis and in six innings he has only allowed one hit while striking out 11 hitters and only walking one. He is the No. 1 prospect in the Pittsburgh Pirates system and is likely to make an appearance in the MLB sometime during 2024.

Another top prospect for the Pirates is Jared Jones. He got his first start in the majors recently and he looked great. The future could be bright on the mound for Pittsburgh.

Photos from LSU baseball’s Game 2 loss to Vanderbilt on Friday night

LSU will look to take the series in Game 3 on Saturday.

The LSU baseball team had a chance to secure its first SEC series win of the year in Game 2 on Friday night against Vanderbilt, and late in the game, it looked like it had a decent chance to.

The Tigers held a 6-5 lead entering the eighth, but a late rally from the Commodores that saw them score three runs in the final two frames ultimately erased that lead and evened the series with an 8-6 win, setting up a rubber match on Saturday.

It was a solid start on the mound from [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag], who went 5.1 innings and allowed just four runs, but [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag] allowed the three late runs in relief.

Here are the photos from the loss, which dropped the Tigers to 3-8 in SEC play.
