The best images from Army’s sixth win over Navy in eight years

Army stuffed Navy on fourth and goal to seal its sixth rivalry victory in the past eight years.

The Army Black Knights defeated the Navy Midshipmen 17-11 on Saturday to claim the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy as the best service academy football team in 2023.

Army, who had won five of the previous seven editions of the classic rivalry, dominated the first half. The Black Knights scored 10 points and held Navy scoreless, taking a multi-possession lead into the break. The Midshipmen put together one solid drive deep into Army territory early in the first half, but starting quarterback Xavier Arline forced a risky throw that ended up in the hands of Army defensive back Max DiDomenico for an interception.

Navy didn’t score any points until the opening minutes of the fourth quarter when they kicked a 37-yard field goal to make it a 10-3 game. Tai Lavatai, who replaced Arline at quarterback, did provide the Navy offense with a little more juice, as he threw for 179 yards on 26 attempts for the game.

Then, disaster struck. Lavatai was stripped in the pocket by Army linebacker Kalib Fortner, who recovered his own fumble and raced 44 yards back to the end zone to make it a 17-3 game with less than five minutes left.

Miraculously, however, Navy still made it a game. Lavatai marched his offense down the field, picking apart soft Army coverage for a 59-yard touchdown drive. After an Army punt, the Midshipmen had the ball with a chance to tie the game in the final two minutes.

Lavatai again picked up yardage in chunks as the Black Knights surrendered easy completions. Once the Midshipmen got into the red zone, however, Army stiffened. On Navy’s final goal-to-go sequence, they had two incompletions and a short throw down to the 2-yard line. The Midshipmen tried to run a quarterback sneak on the final play, but Army stopped them inches from the goal line to seal victory.

College football is back! Your Week 0 viewing guide

Notre Dame vs. Navy in Ireland. USC and Caleb Williams back on the field. And hello Rich Rodriguez! College football is back! Week 0 viewing guide.

College football fans have long been awaiting this weekend. The start of a brand new college football season officially kicks off with what is the appetizer to the grand opening of the sport’s 2023 season coming up next weekend. The Week 0 lineup of games is light on the menu, as it customarily is, but any amount of college football on our screens this weekend will be welcomed as we bring a close to the summer.

Penn State fans may have to wait one more week to join in the festivities, but the Week 0 schedule will help set the mood for the routine many of us will be diving into for the rest of the fall.

Notre Dame and USC are the only power conference programs in action this weekend, but anytime you can have a rivalry game played and a returning Heisman Trophy winner take the field, that helps make for a fun opening weekend of college football.

All games referenced below will take place on Saturday, Aug. 26.

Army defeats Navy in first overtime game in series history

Army-Navy went to OT for the first time and the Cadets won on a field goal

Army-Navy went to overtime for the first time in the 123 games the service academies played.

The annual game took place in Philadelphia on Saturday and one overtime wasn’t enough to settle the rivalry.

It took double overtime and Quinn Maretzki, a junior from Honolulu, Hawaii, kicked a 39-yard field goal to give Army a 20-17 victory. Maretzki had tied the game on a field goal with less than two minutes remaining.

Both teams used big plays in the first extra session.

Markel Johnson scored on a 25-yard run to put Army ahead 17-10.

However, Navy countered with its first — and only — pass completion of the day.

Xavier Arline connected with a wide-open Maquel Haywood for a 25-yard TD. The PAT sent the academises to the second OT session.

Navy had the ball first and Anton Harris Jr., who earlier scored on a 77-yard touchdown run, lost a fumble near the goal line.

That set Army and Maretzki up for his winning kick.

Anton Hall Jr. races 77 yards for Navy touchdown against Army

Navy’s Anton Hall Jr. scored on a 77-yard run against Army in the rivalry game

The Army-Navy game is the story. On Saturday, there was a story within the story on the Midshipmen’s lone touchdown in regulation.

Anton Hall Jr. took a handoff in the third quarter and ran 77 yards for a touchdown that gave Navy a 10-7 lead after the PAT.

Hall played high school football at Gulliver Prep in Florida, where he was a teammate of D’Sean Perry, one of the three Virginia football players killed in a shooting on the school’s campus last month.

Hall remembered Perry to ESPN in a story that ran shortly after the shootings:

Perry was skilled at pottery. His high school teammate, Anton Hall, Jr., was in the beginner’s pottery class next door to Perry’s advanced class. Perry would always wrap his project early then wander over to the beginner’s class and offer tips or start sketching out new designs. And, invariably, he’d start cracking jokes and have the rest of the class laughing hysterically. Hall is convinced Perry could’ve been a professional comedian.

What are you still thinking about after the Irish win over Navy?

Notre Dame’s Braden Lenzy with stunning TD catch against Navy

This grab by Notre Dame’s Braden Lenzy might be the catch of the year

Drew Pyne was off to a perfect start for Notre Dame against Navy on Saturday.

The Fighting Irish QB completed his first seven passes and got plenty of help from Braden Lenzy in the first quarter.

Pyne heaves the pass toward the end zone and somehow, some way, Lenzy comes down with the football.

The announcer correctly calls it a reach-around grab for six points.

How to watch Notre Dame as it travels to face Navy

Notre Dame is usually the easiest college football team to find on TV because its home games are always on NBC (unless Peacock gets in the way … insert eyeroll emoji) and the vast majority of its road games are easily accessible.

Here are the viewing notes:

  • Game Day: Nov. 12, 2022
  • Kickoff: Noon ET
  • TV: ABC
  • Streaming: ESPN app
