Browns sign OG Wyatt Davis, waive DT Jayden Peevy

The former Ohio State standout will battle for a roster spot

On Thursday, the Cleveland Browns wrapped up their voluntary OTA practices with mandatory minicamp kicking off next week. The Browns made a roster move on Friday, waiving defensive tackle Jayden Peevy to make room for former Ohio State standout guard Wyatt Davis.

Davis was originally drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round of the 2021 draft. He has appeared in nine games with four different teams and spent last year on injured reserve with the New York Giants.

The former Ohio State Buckeye is only 25 years old and could provide some quality depth if he makes the roster. Cleveland has added a ton of options on the offensive line, both inside and outside, so making the roster at guard or tackle will not be easy.

Davis will now compete with undrafted free agent Javion Cohen and veteran Michael Dunn for a spot backing up two of the better guards in football in 2024.

Former Ohio State All-American signed by the Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have signed former Ohio State guard, Wyatt Davis, after waiving defensive tackle Jayden Peevy. Davis was a stalwart on the OSU offensive line from 2017-2020 and was named a unanimous All-American selection after the 2020 season.

The former Buckeye was selected in the third round of the 2021 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings but couldn’t seem to find his footing in Minnesota after being a day-two draft pick. He appeared in only six games with the Vikings during his rookie season before being cut.

In 2022, Davis played in one game each with the New Orleans Saints, the Arizona Cardinals, and the New York Giants. He did not play in 2023.

The Browns are fairly deep at the guard position with the addition of Michigan’s Zak Zinter in the draft and undrafted free agent Javion Cohen from Miami. Davis should compete for the third-string job but faces an uphill battle after missing a year.

The Browns now have six former Buckeyes on their roster. Davis joins cornerback Denzel Ward, center Luke Wypler, offensive tackle Dawand Jones, safety Ronnie Hickman, and defensive lineman Mike Hall Jr.

Giants don’t tender restricted free agent WR Isaiah Hodgins

The New York Giants did not tender restricted free agent (RFA) wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins.

The New York Giants did not assign a tender to restricted free agent wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins before the league new year began on Wednesday afternoon, effectively making him an unrestricted free agent.

Hodgins was claimed off waivers by the Giants in November of 2022 and was an integral part of the team’s playoff run that season racking up 351 yards receiving and four touchdowns in eight games.

Last season, Hodgins’ production dipped to just 21 receptions for 231 yards and three scores in 17 games played.

The Giants may seek to bring Hodgins back this spring on a more inexpensive deal.

Offensive lineman Wyatt Davis and quarterback Jacob Eason were also not tendered.

Giants fall to Jets in preseason finale as injuries pile up

The New York Giants dropped their preseason finale to the New York Jets and lost several players to injury in the process.

The New York Giants faced off against the New York Jets on Saturday night at MetLife Stadium in the final preseason game for both teams.

The game held significance in several ways. It was the Jets debut for superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the final game for many young hopefuls on both sides who are competing for roster spots to strut their stuff as final cuts are due Tuesday afternoon.

The Giants, as the ‘home’ team, wore their blue jerseys while the Jets wore all white. Two veterans — wide receiver Sterling Shepard and linebacker Jihad Ward — served as game captains for Big Blue.

Gametime temperature was a balmy 84 degrees with 49 percent humidity and a slight wind of six miles per hour.

11 Giants who need to finish the preseason strong

The 2023 NFL preseason is entering its final days and these 11 New York Giants players need to finish strong or risk losing a roster spot.

The New York Giants must trim their roster down to 53 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on August 29, so the upcoming preseason game against the New York Jets might be the last time some of these players don a Giants uniform.

There are at least 11 players who need to finish the preseason on an uptick so that they can either a) secure a roster spot or b) a place on the Giants’ 16-man practice squad.

Let’s take a look.

Giants release second unofficial preseason depth chart: 5 takeaways

The New York Giants have released their unofficial depth chart ahead of the Carolina Panthers preseason game and here are five takeaways.

The New York Giants have released their second unofficial depth chart, this time in advance of their Week 2 preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

The depth chart was released prior to several of the team’s Tuesday transactions and includes no changes from a week ago. Everything remains exactly the same.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few notable takeaways, however. Here are five.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 21-16 preseason loss to Lions

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1 of the preseason?

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night at Ford Field and fell to the Detroit Lions by a score of 21-16.

The game was a tale of two halves as the defense played above board over the first two quarters before deep reserves faltered late. There was more consistency on offense but that wasn’t necessarily a good thing as the O-Line struggled from the kickoff to the final whistle. The lacking depth there is a genuine concern.

But not all was bad. In fact, there was quite a bit of good, especially as it relates to the team’s 2023 NFL draft class.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the preseason-opening loss? Let’s take a look.

Giants fall to Lions: Winners, losers and those in between

The New York Giants fell to the Lions, 21-16, on Friday and here’s a look at our winners and losers (and those in between) from the game.

Editor’s note: Upon reviewing the game, we changed the entry for Deonte Banks, adding detail on what was a bang-bang play and difficult to read in real-time. Giants Wire writers disagreed (and still disagree) on what transpired.

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night against the Detroit Lions and neither team played their key starters. There were a few spot starters on both sides but predominantly, the game featured depth players.

Accordingly, it was a rather ugly performance for each team. There was more bad than good, and neither coach is going to be particularly happy on Saturday morning.

Here are some winners, losers, and in-betweens from Fright night’s Giants’ victory/defeat.
