Giants don’t tender restricted free agent WR Isaiah Hodgins

The New York Giants did not tender restricted free agent (RFA) wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins.

The New York Giants did not assign a tender to restricted free agent wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins before the league new year began on Wednesday afternoon, effectively making him an unrestricted free agent.

Hodgins was claimed off waivers by the Giants in November of 2022 and was an integral part of the team’s playoff run that season racking up 351 yards receiving and four touchdowns in eight games.

Last season, Hodgins’ production dipped to just 21 receptions for 231 yards and three scores in 17 games played.

The Giants may seek to bring Hodgins back this spring on a more inexpensive deal.

Offensive lineman Wyatt Davis and quarterback Jacob Eason were also not tendered.

Giants fall to Jets in preseason finale as injuries pile up

The New York Giants dropped their preseason finale to the New York Jets and lost several players to injury in the process.

The New York Giants faced off against the New York Jets on Saturday night at MetLife Stadium in the final preseason game for both teams.

The game held significance in several ways. It was the Jets debut for superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the final game for many young hopefuls on both sides who are competing for roster spots to strut their stuff as final cuts are due Tuesday afternoon.

The Giants, as the ‘home’ team, wore their blue jerseys while the Jets wore all white. Two veterans — wide receiver Sterling Shepard and linebacker Jihad Ward — served as game captains for Big Blue.

Gametime temperature was a balmy 84 degrees with 49 percent humidity and a slight wind of six miles per hour.

11 Giants who need to finish the preseason strong

The 2023 NFL preseason is entering its final days and these 11 New York Giants players need to finish strong or risk losing a roster spot.

The New York Giants must trim their roster down to 53 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on August 29, so the upcoming preseason game against the New York Jets might be the last time some of these players don a Giants uniform.

There are at least 11 players who need to finish the preseason on an uptick so that they can either a) secure a roster spot or b) a place on the Giants’ 16-man practice squad.

Let’s take a look.

Giants release second unofficial preseason depth chart: 5 takeaways

The New York Giants have released their unofficial depth chart ahead of the Carolina Panthers preseason game and here are five takeaways.

The New York Giants have released their second unofficial depth chart, this time in advance of their Week 2 preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

The depth chart was released prior to several of the team’s Tuesday transactions and includes no changes from a week ago. Everything remains exactly the same.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few notable takeaways, however. Here are five.

Stock up, down after Giants’ 21-16 preseason loss to Lions

Whose stock is up and whose is down following the New York Giants’ loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1 of the preseason?

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night at Ford Field and fell to the Detroit Lions by a score of 21-16.

The game was a tale of two halves as the defense played above board over the first two quarters before deep reserves faltered late. There was more consistency on offense but that wasn’t necessarily a good thing as the O-Line struggled from the kickoff to the final whistle. The lacking depth there is a genuine concern.

But not all was bad. In fact, there was quite a bit of good, especially as it relates to the team’s 2023 NFL draft class.

Whose stock is up and whose is down after the preseason-opening loss? Let’s take a look.

Giants fall to Lions: Winners, losers and those in between

The New York Giants fell to the Lions, 21-16, on Friday and here’s a look at our winners and losers (and those in between) from the game.

Editor’s note: Upon reviewing the game, we changed the entry for Deonte Banks, adding detail on what was a bang-bang play and difficult to read in real-time. Giants Wire writers disagreed (and still disagree) on what transpired.

The New York Giants opened the 2023 preseason on Friday night against the Detroit Lions and neither team played their key starters. There were a few spot starters on both sides but predominantly, the game featured depth players.

Accordingly, it was a rather ugly performance for each team. There was more bad than good, and neither coach is going to be particularly happy on Saturday morning.

Here are some winners, losers, and in-betweens from Fright night’s Giants’ victory/defeat.

2024 4-star QB and Aggie commit Anthony Maddox shines in 601 Elite Quarterback camp

2024 4-star quarterback and Aggie commit Anthony Maddox shined while participating in the 601 Elite quarterback competition last week.

Texas A&M’s 2024 recruiting cycle is evergrowing as we enter the dead recruiting period, slated to start on Monday, June 26, through Monday, July 24, but before the pause begins, one Aggie commit, four-star quarterback Anthony Maddox, put on quite the showing last week in the 601 Elite Quarterback competition in Mississippi late last week.

The “Under the lights” camp, hosted by private quarterback coach Wyatt Davis, consisted of quarterback prospects from the 2024 through 2027 recruiting cycles, and after a stellar performance, mainly due to his impressive arm and quick release on the run, Maddox earned the 2024 MVP award to represent the class.

Maddox, who is entering his senior season at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is currently positioned as the No. 1-ranked quarterback in Mississippi, No. 24-ranked quarterback in the country, and No. 12-ranked player in Mississippi in the Class of 2024 according to 247Sports  composite rankings. Standing at 6-2 and 175 pounds, Maddox threw for over 2,198 yards and 20 touchdowns with only three interceptions during his 2022 juniors season, helping lead Oak Grove to a 10-3 record and second-round appearance in the MHSAA Class 6A playoffs.

Newly minted Texas A&M offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino’s influence had a large hand in Maddox’s commitment, as Petrino’s history in developing duel-threat signal callers, most notably Heisman-winning quarterback and current Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson, felt like the perfect fit going forward. Joining three-star quarterback Miles O’Neill, Jimbo Fisher has to feel very comfortable while looking toward the future at the quarterback position.

After moving on from multiple players the last two seasons, the Minnesota Vikings have $31,534,662 in dead cap space.

Maneuvering the salary cap is a difficult exercise. A financial version of Tetris, it required massive amounts of planning and structuring contracts in a way to maximize the puzzle that is conducive to flexibility.

The Minnesota Vikings are currently trying to get back to a great spot with the salary cap as general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah tries to clean up the mistakes made by his predecessor Rick Spielman.

According to Over The Cap, the Vikings have the 9th-most dead salary cap space with $31,534,662 counting toward the 2023 salary cap split between 12 players.
