Notre Dame drops in latest Amway Coaches Poll

Notre Dame played up to their ranking but in the latest Amway Coaches Poll they dropped. Find out where the Irish are ranked now.

That was fun last night, wasn’t it? The Irish finally gave the nation no reason to complain about their top 3 ranking, but was it enough for them to stay in that spot?

Well, the Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports  showed that it wasn’t. The Irish fell one spot to No. 4, but this shouldn’t come as a surprise. In all honestly, this probably is a week late, but with Ohio State getting a fairly impressive win over Nebraska in their season opener, the Buckeyes jumped the Irish and Georgia.

Around the ACC, Clemson started off slow but ultimately beat Syracuse at home, North Carolina beat up North Carolina State in the only ranked matchup in the conference, while Miami, FL escaped with a win over Virginia. Wake Forest upset Virginia Tech, so movement for some of the ACC teams wasn’t surprising at all.

Here is the updated Amway Coaches Poll, with the ACC members in bold, and their rankings from last week in parentheses.

ACC Roundup – Week 5 Results

What happened in the ACC on Saturday? Get caught up extremely quickly right here!

For the second week in a row Notre Dame was on the sidelines, this time a pre-determined bye week, but that didn’t stop the ACC from having a plenty entertaining week.

What happened this weekend?

A quick summary from each game:

Friday, October 2:

Wake Forest 66 Campbell 14
The 66 points the Demon Deacons scored against the Camels tied the school record for highest point total since WWII with their 66 point output against Virginia in 1975.  The non-conference win was Wake Forest’s first of any kind so far in 2020.

Saturday, October 3:

NC State 30 No. 24 Pitt 29
Quarterback Devin Leary led the Wolfpack on not one, but two lengthy fourth quarter drives to regain the lead against a strong Pitt defensive front.  The second wrapped with under a minute left and moved NC State to 2-1 on the year while Pitt fell to 3-1.

No. 12 North Carolina 26 Boston College 22
Quarterback Phil Jurkovec led the Eagles on a last-minute drive to get within two points but his pass was intercepted and returned for two by Carolina as the Tar Heels escaped Chestnut Hill with a win after not playing a single game in the last three weeks.

Virginia Tech 38 Duke 31
The Hokies were without 21 different players on Saturday and saw starting quarterback Braxton Burmeister complete just 9 of 25 attempts on the day but Khalil Herbert ran for 208 yards and two scores for the Hokies as they got out of Durham with a win and 2-0 record while Duke fell to 0-4.

Florida State 41 Jacksonville State 24
Florida State actually trailed this game 14-0 at one point and 21-14 at halftime before outscoring the upstart Gamecocks squad, 27-3 in the second half.  The win was the first of the season for Florida State.

No. 1 Clemson 41 Virginia 23
Trevor Lawrence was outstanding again as he went 25/38 for 326 yards and three touchdowns in the rematch of last season’s ACC Championship Game.

Shocker: Notre Dame named best college football team in Indiana

CBS Sports has named the best football team in each state and in a shocker, Notre Dame reps the state of Indiana.

In a complete stunner on Friday morning, Notre Dame was named the best college football program in the state of Indiana entering the 2020 season.

Alright, I hope despite not using any italics or bold or anything else, that you were at least able to pick up on the sarcasm of this very predictable determination.

CBS Sports put together a list of the best football team in 48 of the 50 states as Alaska and Vermont didn’t have a program that qualified by their standards.

Notre Dame was named the best college team in the state of Indiana, hardly a surprise as it was pitted against the likes of Ball State, Indiana and Purdue.  Here is what Barrett Sallee had to say about college football in the Hoosier State:

Indiana — Notre Dame: Notre Dame has double-digit wins in four of its last five seasons, made an appearance in the College Football Playoff in 2018 and should be one of the favorites to unseat Clemson now that it’s a quasi-member of the ACC for 2020. Indiana, Purdue and Ball State can’t hang with the Fighting Irish. — Barrett Sallee

It’s not a surprise whatsoever as outside of a couple years in the late-nineties and early-2000’s that has been the case.

The interesting part of that list comes from other states however.

Virginia overtaking Virginia Tech, Appalachian State taking home the Tar Heel State’s honors and Baylor representing the state of Texas all stand out a bit in the piece.

This writer just wishes Division III programs would have been considered so reigning champion North Central College would have gotten the national love over Northwestern in Illinois.

Who is Notre Dame’s best offensive player of the last 20 years?

ACC Network named the best offensive players of the last 20 years. Which Notre Dame players did they debate between and who do you pick/?

Anyone up for a pointless debate today?

Ok, good.

Me too.

While scrolling Twitter on Friday morning I stumbled into a list that they put together on the ACC Network’s “Packer and Durham” show that take a look back at the last 20 years of ACC football.

The two compiled their lists of the best offensive players the ACC has seen since 2000 as they named one player for each of the current member programs.

Now before you get angry, yes, I too realize that Notre Dame hasn’t been an official member of the ACC until this year.

That applies to other teams such as Boston College, Louisville, Miami, Pitt and Syracuse who all weren’t playing in the ACC at the start of this century, either.

Here is who Mark Packer and Wes Durham both chose as their best offensive players from each ACC football program since 2000.

Fun names on this list, no doubt, but the vast majority of these are no-brainers which takes away some of the fun of debating.

Luckily for us Notre Dame’s is one of the schools where there wasn’t an obvious choice, at least between these two who were deciding.

As you can see, Packer choose Brady Quinn while Durham went with Quenton Nelson, both of which are worthy of the praise.

Statistically speaking, nobody puts up better numbers than Brady Quinn.  He’s thrown for more yards, more touchdowns and led Notre Dame to consecutive BCS appearances at a time when it look like the Fighting Irish football program was headed to irrelevance.

There are a ton of players that you can mention that didn’t get named by either, as well.

Golden Tate won a Belitnikoff and despite the win-loss record during his time not being where anyone would have liked, was a legend and a thrill to watch each Saturday, specifically in 2008 and 2009.

Michael Floyd was similiar to that as well. Maybe his style of play wasn’t as exciting as Tate’s but his production was truly elite.  Will Fuller also comes to mind as do others, as some might argue that Jeff Samardzija was just as good as either.

Josh Adams nearly became a Heisman Trophy finalist and seemed like he was putting up over a 50 yard run each week for some time.

And the countless lineman that have come through and been stars whether it be Ronnie Stanley, Zach or Nick Martin or Mike McGlinchey.

But I’m with Durham on this one.

When you look at Notre Dame football over the last 20 years, who was simply the best player?

It may not be the most exciting position but you can argue that very few dominated their position in the last 20 years like Nelson dominated at offensive guard, specifically in 2017.

Nelson was nearly flawless by the time he left the program after 2017, much of the reason he became the highest drafted offensive guard in the history of the NFL Draft.

It’s not what he’s done with the Indianapolis Colts that puts him on the top of the list for me, but his complete dominance of the position while at Notre Dame.

When you go back and look at Quenton Nelson you see what was easily the best player at the position not just in terms of the Irish, but as dominating as any guard has been in college football has been in quite some time.

Nelson gets my imaginary vote.  Who gets yours?

Notre Dame Football: Report suggests more annual ACC games to come

Both Notre Dame and ACC have a football fling, but neither appear racing to change their Facebook relationship statuses, either.

If you’ve followed us at Fighting Irish Wire at pretty much any point over the last year or so you’re aware that we refer to Notre Dame’s football relationship with the ACC as a “friends with benefits” situation.

Notre Dame gets six games annually but keeps their independence while the ACC gets Notre Dame on the schedule for six of their teams each year.  The Irish then belong to the conference for every other sport the rest of the year.

Both Notre Dame and ACC have a football fling, but neither appear racing to change their Facebook relationship statuses, either.

According to a report from SI’s Wolverine Digest, Notre Dame staying at six games with the ACC when things return to normal, might not be a given.

From the Wolverine Digest report:

“Notre Dame really wanted to play and was willing to enter into an agreement that could lead to something down the road … at the very least, more games every year against ACC teams,” an insider shared. “They’re adamance about playing was the ace-in-the-hole a group, led by Clemson, needed to really push for a season and turn the tide in favor of ignoring the Big Ten.

“I mean, if Notre Dame, with their academic reputation and their national brand, was willing to go forward … it sort of just sealed the ACC’s fate.”

– Wolverine Digest Staff Report 8/26/2020

There isn’t clarification as to whether that means simply adding a seventh ACC game to Notre Dame’s schedule soon or if it means that Notre Dame has promised to join the conference as a full-time member down the road.

Is the entire ACC only on board with playing football in 2020 because it means that Notre Dame MIGHT one day decide to lose it’s independence?

That seems a bit far-fetched to me.

For instance – if Duke, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Florida State are that set on following the Big Ten’s lead, Notre Dame offering to play more ACC football down the road makes them change their beliefs?

I’m not buying it.

There are a lot more questions from this report than there necessarily are answers – one being why Notre Dame pushing for football, something the Michigan football program is said to have also wanted for this season, is another reason to hate them like this piece flat-out says:

And if you’re looking for another reason to hate Notre Dame, now you have it.

-Wolverine Digest Staff Report 8/26/2020

I won’t sit and question the entire validity of the report, they’ve got to have someone in Chicago and Ann Arbor like they say, if they’re willing to go to press with this.

However, to me this feels like this is written a lot more as a piece trying to throw a life-raft to the Big Ten and its commissioner for the conference overestimating it’s own power than actually accepting any blame for a decision that is only being questioned more and more by the day.

What I do know is that Notre Dame seems a lot more open to the idea of one day joining a conference than it ever has been, but that that decision is anything but imminent, too.

This is compelling and thought-provoking, no doubt – I’m just not too certain it all adds up.

Stay tuned to Fighting Irish Wire for anything else that develops off of this and everything else related to Notre Dame as always.

Report: ACC Moving Forward Attempting to Play Football in 2020

There were rumors that the Pac-12 would be just behind the Big Ten and cancel their season as well, but instead we sit at at almost 6:00 pm. ET on Monday and there has been no official word of any additional cancellations.

It’s a roller coaster ride of a day yet again in college football.  It began with the Big Ten seemingly cancelling their season before they came out with leaks that said previous reports were incorrect.

There were rumors that the Pac-12 would be just behind the Big Ten and cancel their season as well, but instead we sit at at almost 6:00 pm. ET on Monday and there has been no official word of any additional cancellations.

We do have a new report out however that one Power Five conference is going to attempt to play football this fall.  Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated is reporting this evening that after meeting today, ACC athletic directors are “moving forward in an attempt to play”.

Notre Dame has obviously joined the ACC for the 2020 season and for those hoping there is football in 2020, it’s a bit of good news.

It’s worth noting that there is no guarantee of anything with that, just that an attempt will be made to play.  If anything it’s good news for the chances of college football in 2020 that an attempt is reportedly still being made to play.

This is going to be a crazy week and I feel like the reports and backtracks are only going to speed up before they slow down.

As always, stay tuned as we’ll have it all covered for you at Fighting Irish Wire.

2021 four-star defensive end Kelvin Gilliam announces commitment date

Kelvin Gilliam, a 2021 DE, has announced he will be committing on August 22. He is the fourth-best VA player on the 247Sports composite.

Kelvin Gilliam, a 2021 defensive end, has announced he will be committing on August 22. A four-star prospect, Gilliam posted a top 10 consisting of California, Florida, Kentucky, LSU, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Penn State, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia Tech.

Gilliam comes from Highland Springs, Virginia, ranking as the fourth-best in-state player on the 247Sports composite. He is on the fringe of becoming a top 100 prospect nationally and it a top 10 weakside defensive end in the 2021 class.

On 247Sports’ crystal ball, there is one prediction for Gilliam to commit to Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners. However, the prediction only comes with five out of 10 confidence.

Currently in Texas’ class, there are three defensive end commitments, with two being on the weak side. Four-stars Jordan Thomas and Derrick Harris Jr. are officially listed as defensive ends, while five-star Ja’Tavion Sanders is classified as an athlete.

Sanders plays both wide receiver and defensive end and is expected to play for Chris Ash when he arrives on campus in 2021.
