Jimbo Fisher is facing immense pressure ahead of the 2023 season

According to CBS Sports writer Barrett Sallee, Jimbo Fisher leads the way in facing the most pressure ahead of the pivotal 2023 season.

Texas A&M’s spring football season came to a close on Saturday night after the conclusion of the Maroon and White Spring Game, where the White team, led by senior quarterback Max Johnson, defeated the Maroon team, led by presumed 2023 starter, sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman by a score of 33-19.

Even in what was simply an exhibition game, progress was made on both sides of the ball, and now all eyes will be on the transfer portal as head coach Jimbo Fisher will look to fill nearly 11 scholarship spots at linebacker, wide receiver, offensive line, and defensive back, all in need of substantial additions to their respective depth charts.

During Jimbo Fisher’s post-spring game press conference following the matchup, outside media attention of course focused on the low-hanging fruit concerning his humourous shots at some of the media members in attendance, yet his overall message of continued improvement and urgency to add through the portal in a more vocal manner leads us to the immense pressure the sixth year head coach is most likely feeling five months before the start of the regular season.

In an article from CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee, seven college football coaches were selected and ranked in accordance with the amount of (catching on yet?) pressure each coach has placed on them in 2023, and to no surprise by anybody paying attention, Jimbo Fisher is the first name on the list. Here’s what Sallee had to say regarding Fisher taking the top spot:

Make no mistake … Fisher is on the hot seat. He is 39-21 (.650) through five seasons in College Station, Texas, which is worse than his predecessor, Kevin Sumlin, who was 44-21 (.679) over the same span. What’s even more concerning is that he reeled in the best recruiting class of all time in 2022, promptly went 5-7 and saw a mass exodus of players this offseason — many of whom were from that class. His $95 million fully-guaranteed contract extension moved the meter when he signed it prior to the 2021 season; however, the SEC’s massive television contract that kicks in prior to the 2024 season will make it much easier to get rid of Fisher if the program continues to decline.

A national college football analyst published his Week 13 report card on Sunday, handing out grades to College Football Playoff contenders and other notable teams across the nation after the final week of the regular season.

CBS Sports analyst Barrett Sallee gave Clemson an “F” grade after its 31-30 loss to South Carolina on Saturday at Death Valley.

“The Tigers had an outside shot of making the CFP going into rivalry weekend even though it didn’t look the part of a national champion,” Sallee wrote. “It turns out it isn’t even a state champion. South Carolina topped Clemson 31-30 to snap Clemson’s 40-game home winning streak.”

Up next for Clemson (10-2, 8-0 ACC) is North Carolina (9-3, 6-2) in the ACC Championship Game this Saturday. Kickoff at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte is scheduled for 8 p.m. on ABC.

National analyst says Clemson overrated, only in top 10 because of brand

Following the release of the third set of College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night, a national college football analyst and writer published an article giving who he sees as the overrated and underrated teams in the latest CFP Rankings.

The first team that CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee mentioned as overrated?

Clemson (9-1, 7-0 ACC), which moved up one spot to No. 9 in the newest edition of the CFP rankings.

Sallee explained why he considers the Tigers to be overrated, pointing to the eye test with Clemson as well as its resume.

Here’s what Sallee wrote:

Eye test is part of the criteria for the CFP Selection Committee, and it’s hard to justify Clemson passing it — at least from an offensive perspective. Its quarterback, DJ Uiagalelei, has been benched twice for ineffective play, and the Tigers offense has sputtered more times than run down truck with an engine about to give out.

The Tigers are looking to earn their 10th win of the season on Saturday when they play host to Miami (5-5, 3-3 ACC) at Death Valley. A victory over the Hurricanes would give Clemson a school-record 12th consecutive season with at least 10 wins.

After the Miami game (3:30 p.m., ESPN), Clemson will clash with rival South Carolina at Death Valley to conclude the regular season before heading to Charlotte for the ACC Championship Game against North Carolina on Dec. 3.

A national college football analyst published his Week 10 report card on Sunday, handing out grades to the teams that were in contention for the College Football Playoff National Championship, according to odds from Caesars Sportsbook before the latest week of college football action.

CBS Sports analyst Barrett Sallee gave Clemson an “F” grade after its 35-14 road upset loss at Notre Dame on Saturday night.

“The Tigers offense struggled mightily, quarterback DJ Uiagalelei couldn’t muster any momentum and the defense ran out of gas,” Sallee wrote. “Dabo Swinney’s team was on thin ice all year, and that ice broke in the 35-14 loss to Notre Dame.”

Up next for Clemson (8-1, 6-0 ACC) is Louisville this Saturday. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.

National analyst: ‘Clemson has a lot of work to do’

A national college football analyst published his report card following Week 3 of the college football season, handing out grades to the teams that were in contention for the College Football Playoff National Championship, according to odds from Caesars Sportsbook before the third week of college football action.

CBS Sports analyst Barrett Sallee gave Clemson a “B-” grade for its 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech at Death Valley last Saturday, writing that the Tigers have “a lot of work to do” to be mentioned in the same breath with a trio of playoff and national title contenders in Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State.

“The 48-20 win over Louisiana Tech looks dominating on the scoreboard, but the No. 5 Tigers only led 13-6 at halftime and starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei only completed 59% of his passes,” Sallee wrote. “Clemson has a lot of work to do in order to be mentioned in the same conversation with Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State.”

Georgia is coming off a dominant 48-7 win at South Carolina, while Alabama trounced UL Monroe in Tuscaloosa, 63-7. Ohio State crushed Toledo in Columbus, 77-21.

The Bulldogs, Crimson Tide and Buckeyes are ranked Nos. 1-3, respectively, in both the latest AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll. Clemson is No. 5 in both polls behind No. 4 Michigan, which shut out UConn in Ann Arbor, 59-0.

Up next for the Tigers is a road trip to Wake Forest (No. 16 Coaches Poll, No. 21 AP Top 25) this Saturday, Sept. 24. The game will kick off at noon ET on ABC.

A national college football analyst published his Week 2 report card on Sunday, handing out grades to the teams that were in contention for the College Football Playoff National Championship, according to odds from Caesars Sportsbook before the second week of college football action.

CBS Sports analyst Barrett Sallee gave Clemson a “C” grade for its 35-12 win over Furman on Saturday at Death Valley.

“Let’s call it like it is … Clemson’s offense needs a lot of work,” Sallee wrote. “The Tigers had just 70 yards and seven points in the second half of a 35-12 win over Furman. If it was an off performance, it might be excusable. This is its identity now.”

Overall, Clemson accumulated 376 yards of total offense and 22 first downs while going 5-of-10 on third downs against the Paladins. DJ Uiagalelei completed 21-for-27 passes for 231 yards and added 36 yards rushing. Clemson rushed for 147 yards on 28 carries, led by Will Shipley, who ran for two more scores for the second straight game.

The Tigers scored touchdowns on five of their first six drives but were held without points over their final four drives. Clemson turned the ball over twice, once on an interception by Uiagalelei and another on a fumble.

Up next for Clemson is Louisiana Tech this Saturday. Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

Notre Dame always overrated? One expert does not think so

Thoughts?

The Irish recently obtained a not so generous tag of being overrated. It could very well be due to their recent College Football Playoff record because the last game of the year typically stands out more than others.

Yes, the Irish have not fared well against Alabama or Clemson, but not many teams did in the years Notre Dame faced those two opponents. One college football writer sees the Irish’s status much differently, CBS Sports Barrett Sallee wants to squash the “Notre Dame is always overrated” narrative.

Take a look below at his facts, using the AP preseason and final rankings as his data.

Since 2017, as Sallee points out, the Irish have finished better than their preseason ranking every season but one, 2019, when they still finished as one of the best teams in the country.

Might it be different if the Irish broke through and won a title in any of the seasons they either made the BCS title game or College Football Playoff. Absolutely, but to call Notre Dame always overrated does seem like a bit of a stretch.

CFB analyst weighs in on Clemson front seven, D-line which ‘should be devastating’

This week, a national outlet published a ranking of the best front-seven rooms in college football entering the 2022 season.

CBS Sports has Clemson’s front seven ranked No. 1, followed by Alabama, Washington, Baylor and Oklahoma State, in that order.

Here’s what college football analyst Barrett Sallee, who authored the ranking for CBS Sports, wrote about the Tigers’ front seven which features no shortage of star power and figures to help the overall unit be one of the nation’s best this season:

If coach Dabo Swinney’s crew is going to get back to the top of the college football world this year, it’ll be on the heels of one of the best defenses — personnel-wise — that he’s ever produced. Superstar Bryan Bresee will anchor the middle of the line of scrimmage and, when healthy, is the top defensive lineman in the country. Add Xavier Thomas and K.J. Henry at edge, and the line should be devastating. The linebacking corps will be led by Trenton Simpson, who had 64 tackles, 12.5 which were for a loss, last season. The only real question here is if the success former defensive coordinator Brent Venables had during his tenure in the upstate can be replicated by new defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin.

Listed among the honorable mention front-seven rooms is defending ACC champion Pittsburgh as well as Notre Dame, which Clemson will play in South Bend on Nov. 5.

Defending national champ Georgia is also an honorable mention, along with Michigan and Oregon.

A national analyst took to social media on Sunday and gave his take on the current state of the Clemson football program, with longtime defensive coordinator Brent Venables leaving for Oklahoma to be the Sooners’ next head coach.

CBS Sports writer and analyst Barrett Sallee believes Dabo Swinney’s program will be just fine despite the departure of Venables, who has been instrumental in Clemson’s success on that side of the ball over the last decade.

While Venables moving on is certainly a significant change, Sallee posted on Twitter that he doesn’t think the Tigers are going anywhere and Swinney will have them back to vying for championships in short order after seeing their run of six straight ACC titles and six straight College Football Playoff appearances come to an end this season.

A national college football analyst handed out grades to some college football teams after Week 5 of the season.

CBS Sports analyst Barrett Sallee gave Clemson (3-2, 2-1 ACC) a “C-” for its 19-13 win over Boston College on Saturday night at Death Valley.

“Clemson skated by Boston College, which had the ball with under one minute to go with a chance to spring the upset,” Sallee wrote in the CBS Sports article. “That’s Clemson’s DNA this year, which isn’t going to give it any style points. It’s unlikely that Clemson even has a chance in the race for the national title, but it kept those hopes alive on Saturday.”
