Every Former Notre Dame Player to Win Super Bowl

Notre Dame has had a long and successful football history but only 45 former players have won a Super Bowl. Here they are.

When you have as long and as distinguished of football tradition as Notre Dame you’re going to have a lot of players who make a good amount of money on Sunday.  How many of those players however reached the pinnacle of football and won a Super Bowl?

A former Notre Dame player will join the club on February 11 when the Chiefs take on the 49ers.  Linebacker [autotag]Drue Tranquill[/autotag] of the Chiefs and offensive guard [autotag]Aaron Banks[/autotag] of the 49ers both have a shot at the crown.

Paul Hornung was the first Golden Domer to win a Super Bowl title, which came in Super Bowl I while Ben Skowronek became the 45th to in Super Bowl LVI.  So who were the 43 to win an NFL title in-between?

Here is a quick look at every Notre Dame player to win a Super Bowl.

Please note: Jerome Collins received a ring with the Colts in Super Bowl XLI but was on injured reserve.  Michael Floyd received a ring with the Patriots in Super Bowl LI but was not on the active roster for that game

Notre Dame lands top-rated receiver in 15 years

Highest rated in 15 years!

Notre Dame had an uneventful Wednesday to open the early signing period and that is meant in the best way possible.  Just hours after the window opened, every single player Notre Dame expected to sign their national letters of intent did exactly that.

As a result Notre Dame moved up in the majority of industry rankings as teams such as Florida saw star commitments choose to sign elsewhere.

One star player that Notre Dame signed is wide receiver [autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag] of Illinois.  Williams enters Notre Dame having the distinction of being the first five-star Irish wide receiver in over a decade.

In fact, he’s the first five-star wide receiver Notre Dame has landed since getting [autotag]Michael Floyd[/autotag] in the 2008 recruiting class.

Michael Floyd went on to play four seasons at Notre Dame and set essentially every program receiving record.  If Williams can come even close to touching what Floyd did as a player then it’s going to be a very special couple of years ahead for Williams and the Notre Dame offense.

ChatGPT ranks top 10 receivers in Notre Dame history

Please note that tight ends are not included on this list.

We’ve been asking AI writing tool ChatGPT to give its opinions of the top 10 Notre Dame players by position. It’s been a great way to generate discussion and debate amongst our readers. So far, we’ve asked it to list the top quarterbacks and running backs. Now, we move onto the receivers.

Please note that this list will not include tight ends but rather pure receivers. Even though it’s becoming more difficult to differentiate between receivers and tight ends these days, they still are different enough that they need to be separated. So please don’t ask why Michael Mayer or Cole Kmet aren’t on this list, but we also will get more into that when we ask ChatGPT about Irish tight ends.

Please also note that ChatGPT’s last knowledge update was in September 2021, and this list is based on historical data that was available at that time. Also, some entries have been edited for clarity and accuracy:

Watch: 2009 highlights of Notre Dame win over Michigan State

Remember this thriller?

Coming off a heartbreaking loss at Michigan the week before, Notre Dame tried to get back on track against Michigan State. It was 2009, which proved to be the final year of [autotag]Charlie Weis[/autotag]’ Irish tenure. As “SportsCenter” showed its viewers, anyone who didn’t tune in that day missed one heck of a thriller. The Irish surrendered the lead in the fourth quarter, got it back, then turned out the lights in a 33-30 victory:

As you can see from the graphic at the end, the victory came at the expense of an injury to [autotag]Michael Floyd[/autotag] that would knock him out until November. But there were plenty of folks who helped improve the Irish’s record to 2-1. [autotag]Jimmy Clausen[/autotag] outdueled Kirk Cousins, throwing for 300 yards and two touchdowns. One of them was to Floyd, and the other, which turned out to be the game-winning score, went to [autotag]Golden Tate[/autotag].

[autotag]Armando Allen[/autotag] showed his versatility in this game. Not only did he run for 115 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, but he threw the lone touchdown pass of his career from 5 yards out to [autotag]Robby Parris[/autotag]. That’s a day to remember.

Notre Dame’s top rated receiving recruits since 2000

With Cam Williams is now being a five-star, how high does he rank in the last quarter century for Notre Dame receiving commitments?

2024 Notre Dame recruiting class commitment Cam Williams was given a five-star grade by 247Sports on Thursday.  He was already Notre Dame’s top ranked commitment in the class and the five-star ranking only brings more attention.

If you’ve been following Notre Dame football for any amount of time then you’re aware that five-star receivers don’t come around often.  Heck, many of the best receivers who commit don’t even end up sticking around all that long.

So where does Williams rank on Notre Dame’s top receiving recruits since 2000?  We looked at the top ranked wide receivers and tight ends that wound up picking Notre Dame since 2000.  Here are the top 25.

Watch: Notre Dame snaps bowl losing streak in 2008 Hawaii Bowl

Need a sports fix this Christmas Eve?

In case you haven’t heard, there will be no live sports this Christmas Eve. The one event that was supposed to take place, the Hawaii Bowl between Hawaii and Memphis, has been canceled after the Rainbow Warriors’ roster was ravaged by injuries, transfers and COVID-19. Those who are hungry for this particular bowl will have to wait another year.

However, if you must watch the bowl that takes places in the Aloha State, check out SportsCenter highlights of the 2008 edition between the Warriors and Notre Dame. Going in, the Irish had not won a bowl since the 1994 Cotton Bowl. Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate ended that drought by setting program bowl records in a 49-21 victory. The game also was notable for the Irish wearing last names on the back of their jerseys and Michael Floyd’s helmet losing a bit of the iconic gold paint.

After you watch these highlights, go have a safe and happy holiday with whoever it is you care about if you can:

Notre Dame makes top 5 for the best tackle in the country

A potentially huge addition to the ‘22 class

The 2022 recruiting class for Notre Dame is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory. The class of ‘13 was a fantastic group, ranking inside the top 5 in the country, with the ‘08 version pacing the field after finishing second in the nation. The current class has the same ranking as ‘08 class held, which included Michael Floyd, Kyle Rudolph, and Dayne Crist.

The momentum is building and the Irish are still certainly in the mix for the best offensive tackle in the country Zach Rice. The Virginia native dropped his top 5 and Notre Dame was included.

The plan is for Rice to visit each of his final schools for an official when the NCAA finally ends the long dead period. At six-foot-six-inches and 282-pounds, the tackle has a very good last group of schools to choose from.

Jeff Quinn, Notre Dame offensive line coach, and Brian Kelly, has their work cut out for the to beat the current college football power powerhouse, Alabama, the Midwest power Ohio State, his home state school in Virginia and another ACC foe in North Carolina.

A commitment from Rice would certainly be a cherry on top of the Notre Dame recruiting class and the Irish are hungry to make that addition.

Who is Notre Dame’s best offensive player of the last 20 years?

ACC Network named the best offensive players of the last 20 years. Which Notre Dame players did they debate between and who do you pick/?

Anyone up for a pointless debate today?

Ok, good.

Me too.

While scrolling Twitter on Friday morning I stumbled into a list that they put together on the ACC Network’s “Packer and Durham” show that take a look back at the last 20 years of ACC football.

The two compiled their lists of the best offensive players the ACC has seen since 2000 as they named one player for each of the current member programs.

Now before you get angry, yes, I too realize that Notre Dame hasn’t been an official member of the ACC until this year.

That applies to other teams such as Boston College, Louisville, Miami, Pitt and Syracuse who all weren’t playing in the ACC at the start of this century, either.

Here is who Mark Packer and Wes Durham both chose as their best offensive players from each ACC football program since 2000.

Fun names on this list, no doubt, but the vast majority of these are no-brainers which takes away some of the fun of debating.

Luckily for us Notre Dame’s is one of the schools where there wasn’t an obvious choice, at least between these two who were deciding.

As you can see, Packer choose Brady Quinn while Durham went with Quenton Nelson, both of which are worthy of the praise.

Statistically speaking, nobody puts up better numbers than Brady Quinn.  He’s thrown for more yards, more touchdowns and led Notre Dame to consecutive BCS appearances at a time when it look like the Fighting Irish football program was headed to irrelevance.

There are a ton of players that you can mention that didn’t get named by either, as well.

Golden Tate won a Belitnikoff and despite the win-loss record during his time not being where anyone would have liked, was a legend and a thrill to watch each Saturday, specifically in 2008 and 2009.

Michael Floyd was similiar to that as well. Maybe his style of play wasn’t as exciting as Tate’s but his production was truly elite.  Will Fuller also comes to mind as do others, as some might argue that Jeff Samardzija was just as good as either.

Josh Adams nearly became a Heisman Trophy finalist and seemed like he was putting up over a 50 yard run each week for some time.

And the countless lineman that have come through and been stars whether it be Ronnie Stanley, Zach or Nick Martin or Mike McGlinchey.

But I’m with Durham on this one.

When you look at Notre Dame football over the last 20 years, who was simply the best player?

It may not be the most exciting position but you can argue that very few dominated their position in the last 20 years like Nelson dominated at offensive guard, specifically in 2017.

Nelson was nearly flawless by the time he left the program after 2017, much of the reason he became the highest drafted offensive guard in the history of the NFL Draft.

It’s not what he’s done with the Indianapolis Colts that puts him on the top of the list for me, but his complete dominance of the position while at Notre Dame.

When you go back and look at Quenton Nelson you see what was easily the best player at the position not just in terms of the Irish, but as dominating as any guard has been in college football has been in quite some time.

Nelson gets my imaginary vote.  Who gets yours?
