Notre Dame baseball starts mid-week with win vs. in-state foe

Another W in the books for the Notre Dame baseball team

The following is courtesy of the Notre Dame athletic department:

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish take home another victory over Valparaiso as they down the Beacons 7-3 at Frank Eck Stadium on Tuesday, April 18. The Irish advance to 19-15 on the season as they start their five game homestand this week in the win column.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Beacons would take the 1-0 lead out of the gate as Valpo homered to left field in the top of the first. It wouldn’t take long for the Irish to get their offense rolling as they responded with a four-run frame in the bottom of the first to take the lead 4-1. Five Irish players recorded singles in the frame as TJ Williams, Carter Putz, Jack Penney, Vinny Martinez, and DM Jefferson each recorded their first hits of the day.

Valparaiso would tack on two more runs in the top of the second to close the gap to one at 4-3.

The Irish would hold the Beacons scoreless in the top of the third as Spivey was relieved by Sammy Cooper with runners on first and second with zero outs. Cooper allowed one hit and with bases loaded, a pair of strikeouts and a pop up to the shortstop got him out of the jam.

The Irish extended their lead in the bottom of the third as Vinny Martinez sent it 422’ out to right field, recording his fifth home run of the season. His solo homer gave the Irish the two-run advantage at 5-3.

Both Beacons and Irish went three up, three down for a scoreless fourth. In the fifth frame, Prajzner and Penney both singled as Penney’s base hit would send home Prajzner from second base and give the Irish the 6-3 lead.

Zeros were hung in the sixth and seventh until Martinez crushed the ball to deep right field for his second home run of the day to make it a 7-3 ballgame.

Ryan Lynch would close for the Irish as he took the mound to start the ninth, recording three strikeouts across just one inning as he struck out the side to close the Irish win.

Cooper is now 3-1 after taking home the win, pitching 3.0 innings and recording three strikeouts. He was relieved by Carter Bosch, who also threw 3.0 innings and tallied three strikeouts. Spivey, Cooper, Bosch, and Lynch finished with 10 strikeouts as a staff in today’s win.

UP NEXT

The Irish are back in action at Frank Eck Wednesday for another midweek matchup as they host the Western Michigan Broncos at 6 PM on Wednesday, April 19.

Notre Dame baseball finishes their weekend tilt against Wake Forest with a win

Why Valparaiso Will Win

The Crusaders shouldn’t be just a speed bump.

They’ve got an efficient enough passing game and good enough run defense to give New Mexico State problems. There’s a set style that has to work.

The Angels have to control the game on the ground, they can’t rely on the passing attack to do much, and they can’t turn the ball over. They gave it up three times in the five wins and 12 times in the six losses – they have yet to win when turnover it over multiple times.

Valpo needs the takeaways, and they have the pass rush to help force them. Get the D into the backfield, the O needs Aaron Dawson and the ground attack to take over early, and …

Why New Mexico State Will Win

This is a dangerous Valpo team, but it’s painfully inconsistent.

Dawson is a playmaker, and the combination of Sam Hafner and Kevin Spelman can get behind the line, but the offense has a problem keeping defense out to the backfield.

It’s not like New Mexico State has a big-time pass rush, but there’s enough to show up and be disruptive. The pass defense should hold on, and the offense might be able to carry over the balance from last week’s shocking 49-14 win over Liberty.

As long as there aren’t a ton of turnovers – the Aggies cleared them up for the most part of the second half of the season – they’ll be fine.

Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s been a fun week for New Mexico State football.

Jerry Kill’s bench destroyed Liberty as part of a run of four wins in five games, it got this game schedule, and it found out that it received a special waiver to go bowling even at 5-6 – the San Jose State game was cancelled earlier in the year and couldn’t be rescheduled.

Win or lose, New Mexico State will be in a bowl game. It’ll be a win with the Aggie defensive line generating enough pressure to stall too many promising Valpo drives.

Notre Dame righty Roman Kimball reportedly transfers to South Carolina

Think the Irish will miss him?

Although Notre Dame is coming off a College World Series appearance, not everyone sees a chance to thrive in South Bend. One of them is right-handed reliever [autotag]Roman Kimball[/autotag], who is transferring to South Carolina according to 247Sports. Kimball just completed his freshman season with the Irish, making 17 appearances out of the bullpen. He had a 5.76 ERA and struck out 32 batters over 25 innings. This summer, he is pitching for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Kimball, who hails from New Hartford, New York, went past one inning eight times with the Irish. His longest outing was four innings in a 5-1 Irish win over Valparaiso on April 19. He nearly equaled that in his lone game with the Anglers to this point, going three innings.

While this will be a tough loss for the Irish’s bullpen, Kimball obviously thought this decision through, so all we can do is wish him well with the Gamecocks.

Notre Dame Baseball sweeps rain shortened series against NC State

Make that 9-in-a-row

Once again the Irish come out on top of ACC another series, this time just a two-game set against host North Carolina State. Friday evening saw Link Jarrett’s team battle back late to erase a four-run deficit and ultimately get an extra inning win.

Saturday’s game was canceled due to rain, so Sunday’s finale would determine if the Irish would win the series or return to South Bend with a split. Notre Dame would not be denied another series win, notching a 11-4 victory and extend their winning steak to nine games and starting the ACC conference schedule with two wins and no losses.

Although the Irish never trailed on Sunday, the Wolfpack did make it close. After four and a half innings, the visitors led 4-0 but NC State wouldn’t roll over that easily. They scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Saturday rain out helped the Irish in this situation.

John Michael Bertrand, who was scheduled to start the middle game, instead started the finale, going five innings allowing three runs. Austin Temple, who was supposed to start on Sunday, came in relief of Bertrand and finished out the game with four strong innings, allowing just one run. They combined for nine strikeouts, and the Irish bats did the rest.

A pair of runs in the top of the eighth, followed by a handful in the top of the ninth sealed the game for the Irish. Carter Putz was the catalyst at the dish, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jared Miller scored three runs while adding his second steal of the season.

The 11-4 getaway day win improved the Notre Dame record to 11-1 as they once again stand on top of the ACC Atlantic division standings. Three other teams are undefeated in conference play, but each of them (North Carolina, Virginia and Georgia Tech) are on the Coastal division.

The Irish will finally host a game in South Bend, as they welcome in Valparaiso on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00pm CST.

Former Wisconsin G Kobe King has a successful Valparaiso debut

The former Badger played in his first collegiate game in nearly two years

After nearly two years away from college basketball, former Badger guard Kobe King returned to the hardwood on Tuesday. The La Crosse native recently gained eligibility at Valparaiso, and has joined forces with fellow former Badgers in Trevor Anderson and Joe Hedstrom.

In his first collegiate game since January 24, 2020, King scored 19 points in a team-high 23 minutes off the bench. The former Badger went 9-for-13 from the field in a 101-58 win over East-West University.

“It felt good,” said King following the win “It felt very good. My adrenaline was high. I just wanted to be out there and wanted to be with my teammates instead of going at them in practice.”

Led by King and Anderson, the Beacons will now prepare for Missouri Valley Conference play starting in a few short weeks.
