Browns RB coach Duce Staley has interesting past comments on new RB D’Onta Foreman

Staley did not hide his feelings about Foreman a year ago…

The Cleveland Browns have signed running back D’Onta Foreman, and their new running backs coach Duce Staley is familiar with his game.

When Staley was hired by the Carolina Panthers a year ago, he was asked about both Foreman and Chuba Hubbard, two guys he was slated to coach. And Staley praised both backs glowingly:

“Those dudes are real… We came down here last year and got our (expletive) whipped. Exactly what happened. Those guys were running up and down the field. And of course, as a former running back, you love seeing running backs have success. Not against us of course. But you like seeing it. But man, those two guys…and studying them in college also, I was able to watch film and watch the success they had. I loved them in college and I love them now.”

The only issue? Foreman was a free agent last season as well, and when Staley was asked last offseason how highly he valued the free agent back, Staley did not hide his desires. “Super high… Super high for me. But you know, my last name ain’t Fitterer.” Fitterer, of course, is the former general manager of the Panthers who opted not to re-sign Foreman despite Staley’s public plea.

A year later now, Staley finally gets his guy.

With running back Nick Chubb’s recovery timeline still uncertain, and with the struggles of Jerome Ford from a year ago, Foreman has a real chance to make an impact with the Browns in 2024.

Former Panthers coach Duce Staley ended up getting D’Onta Foreman after all

After wanting D’Onta Foreman with him in Carolina last season, new Duce Staley will finally get his chance to work with the veteran RB in 2024.

The union of Duce Staley and D’Onta Foreman was over a year in the making—and it was finally made on Wednesday.

As first reported by Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz this afternoon, the former Carolina Panthers running back is expected to sign with the Cleveland Browns. And over in Cleveland is Staley, Carolina’s former assistant head coach and running backs coach.

Staley and Foreman never got to work together in Charlotte. Soon after the former was hired to the staff last offseason, the latter walked off to the Chicago Bears in free agency.

But before Foreman went out north, Staley made his feelings about Foreman very clear during his introductory press conference for the Panthers on Feb. 23, 2023.

“Super high, for me,” Staley replied when asked how high of a priority re-signing Foreman was to him. “But my name ain’t Fitterer.”

Welp.

Since then, Staley and former general manager Scott Fitterer have been relieved of their duties by the organization. Foreman, meanwhile, rushed for 425 yards and four touchdowns as a Bear this past season.

Kevin Stefanski releases statements on all new Browns hires

The Browns have filled out their offensive staff with Ken Dorsey, Duce Staley, and more. Here is what Kevin Stefanski had to say…

After hiring Ken Dorsey as his new offensive coordinator, Duce Staley has his new running backs coach, and more, Kevin Stefanski provided quotes to each of the new members of his staff with the Cleveland Browns.

Overhauling his offensive staff, former offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt was dismissed and has now landed with the New England Patriots. Staley has replaced Stump Mitchell as running backs coach, and T.C. McCartney was replaced with Tommy Rees as the tight ends coach (who was also given the passing game specialist title).

They made one change on the defensive side of the ball as well, bringing in Jacques Cesaire as their new defensive line coach.

The Browns have officially announced those hires now, and the head coach provided quotes on each of the new members of his staff. Here is what Stefanski had to say about his new offensive coordinator and the other three hires made to his staff.

Ex-Lions assistant coach Duce Staley finds a new team

Former Lions assistant head coach Duce Staley will be the new RB coach for the Cleveland Browns

Duce Staley is joining his third NFL team in the last 12 months. The former Lions assistant head coach and running backs coach will be the new RB coach for the Cleveland Browns.

Staley was the assistant head coach and RB coach under Dan Campbell in Detroit for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He left after 2022 to join the Carolina Panthers in a move that allowed Staley to be closer to his home and family. Alas, his time in Carolina was short; Staley was among those let go when the Panthers cleaned house during the 2023 season.

In Cleveland, Staley replaces Stump Mitchell, who was one of three offensive assistants let go after the Browns lost in the AFC playoffs. He is reunited with Browns defensive coordinator — and former Lions head coach — Jim Schwartz, whom he coached with in Philadelphia for five seasons.

Social media reacts as the Browns add Duce Staley as new RBs coach

Fans celebrated the hire on social media

The Cleveland Browns have another hire as Duce Staley joins the team as their new running backs coach.

Head coach Kevin Stefanski continues to rebuild his offensive staff after cleaning house after the season. The Browns had some serious competition, especially from the New York Jets but they were able to lure Staley to Cleveland in the end. Staley comes to town from Carolina where he was the running backs coach and assistant head coach.

Staley is not a stranger to the AFC North after playing for the Steelers from 2004-2006. He comes to Cleveland after spending the year with Frank Reich and an offense built around a mobile quarterback in Bryce Young last year’s number-one pick.

After looking at Browns Twitter, it is easy to say that fans are mostly excited about the addition of Staley. Looking at the offenses Staley has been around you realize he is a fresh voice with different offensive philosophies than the rest of the staff under Stefanski. A great hire bringing in a respected and talented coach that will help the Browns offense improve in 2024.

Here are some reactions fans had to the announcement of the new running backs coach’s hiring.

Former Panthers assistant HC/RB coach Duce Staley joining Browns

Per CBS Sports, former Panthers assistant HC/RB coach Duce Staley is off to Cleveland.

The Duce is no longer on the loose.

As first reported by CBS Sports senior NFL insider Josina Anderson, former Carolina Panthers assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley is set to join the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland.com Browns beat writer Mary Kay Cabot then seconded the report just minutes later.

The West Columbia, S.C. native was hired by the Panthers during the reconstruction of their coaching staff last offseason. But Staley wouldn’t last long—as he, head coach Frank Reich and quarterbacks coach Josh McCown were dismissed following the team’s Week 12 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Before coming back home, Staley built up one heck of a reputation on the NFL sidelines. He served as the special teams quality control coach, running backs coach and assistant head coach for the Philadelphia Eagles between 2011 and 2020 and as the assistant head coach and running backs coach for the Detroit Lions between 2021 and 2022.

Report: Duce Staley spurns Jets to join Browns as RB coach

The Browns have their new running backs coach

The Cleveland Browns have their new running backs coach as Duce Staley turns away the New York Jets.

He had offers from both teams, but the former NFL running back is coming to Cleveland as the replacement for the recently let-go Stump Mitchell. CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson was the first to report the news.

Staley has been coaching since 2010 when he got his start with the Philadelphia Eagles. He has also been the running backs coach and assistant head coach of the Detroit Lions, as well as the Carolina Panthers. He was let go by the Panthers by interim head coach Chris Tabor after the firing of Frank Reich.

The health of Nick Chubb is a massive factor in the running back room, but the Browns were not able to pull adequate performances from their young backs in Jerome Ford or Pierre Strong Jr. Perhaps a change in voice can get the best out of these players (or any other young back that could be drafted in the 2024 NFL draft).

Two early candidates for Jets’ vacant running back coaching position

A look at two early candidates for the Jets’ vacant running back coaching position: Duce Staley and Tony Dews.

It was reported Tuesday morning by SNY’s Connor Hughes that Taylor Embree will not return as the running backs coach for the New York Jets. So far, via various reports, two early names have popped up to fill the vacancy to coach Breece Hall and the other running backs. Those candidates include former Panthers running back coach Duce Staley and Tony Dew, who spent 2023 as the tight ends coach for the Tennessee Titans. Let’s take a look at these two candidates.

Report: Browns have competition for RBs coach Duce Staley

In addition to the Browns, the Jets are also showing interest in RBs coach Duce Staley

The Browns are looking to rebuild their offensive coaching staff in order to diversify their scheme. They’re attempting to build an offense that plays to the strengths of Deshaun Watson and running backs coach is one of the available positions.

Earlier in the week, the Browns held their first interview for the position when they brought in former NFL running back Duce Staley. After retiring from the NFL, Staley started his coaching career in 2011. According to a report from Browns Insider Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland has competition for Staley’s services as the New York Jets are also looking to hire him.

The team seems to be taking its time identifying targets to join Kevin Stefanski’s staff as it hasn’t had many reported interviews this week. It’ll be exciting to see who is brought in to try and help build up this offense for the 2024 season as Cleveland will look to continue its success from 2023.

Browns hosting Duce Staley to fill vacant RB coach role

The Browns are moving fast to fill their job openings.

The Cleveland Browns are hosting a respected running backs coach in Duce Staley as they look to fill their job opening.

Moving on from several offensive coaches today, running backs coach Stump Mitchell was among them. And it looks like the Browns are wasting no time trying to fill the vacancy left behind by the firing of Mitchell. Hosting the former running back himself (according to CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson), Staley is a well-respected coach around the NFL.

Most notable for his fiery demeanor on Hard Knocks with the Detroit Lions, Staley is not afraid to get after his players and push them to reach their highest potential. This is much needed in a running back room with two young ball carriers in Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong Jr.

He spent this past season with the Carolina Panthers, a move he made to be closer to family. Staley was let go by interim head coach Chris Tabor after the firing of head coach Frank Reich.
