Ohio State falls in latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

After beating the No. 5 team in the country, Ohio State still managed to drop in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

The theme continues. After Ohio State beat the No. 5 team in the country by eleven, more seem to be less interested in how the defense looked, and more focused on the perceived shortcomings of the offense, one that only put up 21-points against the Fighting Irish.

ESPN started things by dropping the Buckeyes in its power rankings, and now, officially, the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll has followed suit and dropped OSU down a spot to No. 3, behind Alabama (1) and Georgia (2).

Rounding out the top ten after those three are Clemson, Michigan, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Baylor, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma State. To the voters, it seems to mean that they don’t believe in either Ohio State or the Fighting Irish after one week of play.

The rest of the Coaches Poll is also very interesting, but hey, we are only one week into everyone playing a game so this is all going to chance drastically over the next few weekends.

What happened last time LSU began the year unranked?

LSU is in some unfamiliar territory as it begins the 2022 campaign.

The USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 have both been released, and LSU is nowhere to be found in either one.

This is an unfamiliar spot for the Tigers to be in. They haven’t begun the year unranked since 2000.

There are more similarities between the 2000 season and this one.

Prior to that campaign, LSU failed to finish ranked in 1998 and 1999. Until the last couple of seasons, that was the last time LSU had finished unranked in two consecutive years.

It was Nick Saban’s first year, just like this will be Brian Kelly’s maiden voyage in Baton Rouge. LSU started the year 3-3, but the tide turned after a 34-0 win against Kentucky.

Saban’s LSU ripped off four wins in a row. That included a 45-38 win over No. 13 Mississippi State. The Tigers dropped the regular season finale to Arkansas and moved to 7-4.

LSU faced No. 15 Georgia Tech in the Peach Bowl, where the Tigers got a 28-14 win. That was good enough to finish the year ranked 22nd.

LSU’s 2000 team was led by receiver [autotag]Josh Reed[/autotag] and running back [autotag]LaBrandon Toefield[/autotag]. The rest of the Saban era is history, as he went on to win a national championship just a few years later.

If the Tigers manage an 8-4 record with a top 25 finish this year, I think fans should be happy. That’s not the expectation at LSU, but a rebuild requires patience.

A season such as the one LSU had in 2000 would be enough to show us that Brian Kelly has this program on the right track.

CFB coaches and oddsmakers agree on the top four teams, but not much after that

USA TODAY Sports’ coaches poll deviates quite a bit from the odds.

Futures odds aren’t an exact ranking of how teams are expected to perform because big bets can swing odds and cause teams to leap or drop a few spots. And other factors beyond actual ability can also change the order of odds. However, it isn’t exactly the worst ranking system. By and large, the better the team, the shorter the odds. And the worse a team is, the longer its odds.

With that in mind, I took a look at the recent USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll to cross-check the rankings with national championship odds at Tipico Sportsbook. And while the coaches and odds agree on the top four teams — Alabama (+190), Ohio State (+330), Georgia (+350) and Clemson (+1200), with a considerable gap between three and four — there were a few discrepancies after that may reflect who the coaches see as overrated and underrated.

Texas deemed one of five overrated teams in USA TODAY Sports’ Coaches Poll

Here’s a look at USA TODAY Sports’ five overrated teams in the preseason coaches poll.

Preseason college football rankings should always be taken with a grain of salt. Continue reading “Texas deemed one of five overrated teams in USA TODAY Sports’ Coaches Poll”

From Alabama to Houston, here are the top-25 teams in the preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

How many of these teams will still be ranked in November?

Preseason college football rankings and odds don’t often mean a whole lot by the time November rolls around, and we’re not going to pretend otherwise. Outside of the top-5 teams — and really, maybe just the top-3 ones — so much can change for them in just the first week of the season.

Still, it’s always fun and interesting to see where teams landed in the 2022 preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, which was released Monday. Alabama is comfortably at No. 1 — and that should not come as a surprise to most — while Ohio State and Georgia rounded out the top-3 teams.

Wondering how this poll works? The USA TODAY Sports AFCA Board of Coaches consists of 66 FBS head coaches, and each one submits their top-25 teams through a points system with a first-place vote for 25 points, a second-place vote for 24 points, and so on.

Some interesting notes about the poll, per USA TODAY Sports: Teams like Iowa and Tennessee didn’t make the cut but received enough votes to put them in the top 25 in previous seasons; there are very high or very low expectations for Lincoln Riley in his first season at USC, which received a couple No. 4 votes while being left off some people’s ballots altogether; and Texas received one single first-place vote, which LOL.

Outside of Alabama and Texas, the only other teams with first-place votes were Ohio State and Georgia.

But jokes and unreliability aside, here’s a look at the top-25 teams in the 2022 preseason USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Alabama takes top spot in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

No surprises at the top with the preseason coaches poll being released.

With less than a month left until the start of the 2022 college football season, we finally have the preseason coaches poll. It was released on Monday.

In a not-so-surprising turn of events, the Alabama Crimson Tide take the top spot as many believed would be the case. The defending national champion Georgia Bulldogs take the No. 3 spot in the initial poll. Overall there are six SEC teams in the top 25 and three in the top 10. The Texas A&M Aggies debut at No. 7. Another five SEC teams led by the Tennessee Vols received votes on the preseason coaches poll.

LSU Baseball Rankings Update: Weekend sweep in Nashville helps the Tigers climb

The Tigers kept their hopes of hosting a regional alive last weekend against Vanderbilt.

What a weekend it was in Nashville as the LSU Tigers swept the Vanderbilt Commodores and secured the No. 4 seed for the 2022 SEC Tournament.

[autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] had a great series going 8-for-16 with three homers and 10 RBI to earn SEC Player of the Week honors. We went into the weekend series thinking that any chance the Tigers had at hosting a regional was pretty much gone, but LSU flipped the script with a series sweep and a first-round bye in the conference tournament clinched.

Now, if LSU has a good showing in Hoover, it may secure a regional in Baton Rouge. The Tigers’ first game will be Wednesday evening at approximately 8 p.m. CT against the winner of Auburn and Kentucky.

In the meantime, LSU saw its standing in the national polls rise after an impressive weekend. Here’s where it stands in the latest rankings, including the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.
