What is wrong with LSU baseball?

The 2024 season has not gotten off to the best start for the Tigers.

The 2024 season has not gotten off to the best start for the LSU baseball team. After three conference series, the Tigers are 20-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play and have lost all three series. The Tigers dropped series to Mississippi State and Florida 2-1 and then got swept by Arkansas last weekend.

So, what is going on with this team? For one, let’s rewind to the 2023 season. [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the LSU Tigers had the two best players in college baseball on their team, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag]. The No. 1 and No. 2 overall draft picks in the 2023 MLB draft.

Along with that, the team had [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag], [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag], [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and [autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag]. That equates to two out of three starting pitchers, first and second base, shortstop, designated hitter, and two of the three outfield spots. One outfield spot ([autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag]), one starting pitcher ([autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag]), and two catchers ([autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] and [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag]) were all that remained from last year’s starting lineup.

Replacing six hitters in your starting lineup and two of your starting pitchers is not an easy task. Johnson had to hit the recruiting trail hard for high school kids and players in the transfer portal. He did a great job of rebuilding the team, but some players you just can’t replace. There is no replacement for those guys.

With that out of the way, let’s take a look at some stats so far. LSU is in the middle of the road for most hitting statistics in the conference. The Tigers are seventh in the conference in batting average, on-base percentage, and hits, eighth in slugging percentage, doubles, and triples. The biggest issue for LSU on the offensive side is that we are ranked 11th out of 14 in RBI and runs scored. LSU is not hitting the long ball as well either as the Tigers rank ninth in that stat.

Three more interesting offensive stats, LSU ranks first in the conference in double plays and caught stealing. First in those areas is not a good thing. That means you have hit the most double plays and been caught stealing the most. [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] leads the conference in double plays. He has hit into eight of them. That’s three more than the next closest player.

Now, let’s look at the Tigers’ performance on the mound. [autotag]Luke Holman[/autotag] is the silver lining of this pitching staff. Without him, you would not want to see any of these numbers. Holman has the second-lowest ERA (1.38), second-highest strikeouts (61), and fourth-lowest opponent batting average (.173). Why am I singling him out? Because if you take him out of the equation, LSU does not have another pitcher in the top 15 of the conference.

LSU has the MOST walks in the SEC (131) and the second most wild pitches in the SEC (28). [autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] is tied for the most losses in the conference with four and three LSU pitchers are tied for sixth in the conference in wild pitches with four. ([autotag]Kade Anderson[/autotag], [autotag]Gage Jump[/autotag] and Hurd)

LSU is sixth in the conference in fielding percentage but [autotag]Michael Braswell III[/autotag] is tied for first for the most errors in the conference with seven. Those numbers will not get the job done, especially in conference play.

LSU will play Southern at home on Monday before hosting Vanderbilt this weekend.

Brayden Jobert officially goes pro with Cardinals

Brayden Jobert will officially turn pro with the St. Louis Cardinals.

After the St. Louis Cardinals selected [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] in the 12th round of the MLB Draft, he’s elected to forgo his remaining eligibility and turn pro.

It comes as no surprise with Jobert being a four-year college player, spending two years at a community college before playing his final two at LSU.

Jobert was one of LSU’s most consistent hitters in his time as a Tiger, slugging .587 over 119 games. He totaled four hits in his final game to help LSU clinch the College World Series final against Florida.

In a Tweet, Jobert thanked [autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] and the staff and said, “I will carry the Purple and Gold love for the rest of my life.”

The big swinging lefty will now try to make the most of his power in the Cardinals organization. Despite being a 12th-round pick, his age and SEC experience could make him a valuable piece as he attempts to make it to the show.

LSU lands an outfielder from the Pac-12 in the transfer portal

Jay Johnson has made another splash in the transfer portal. This time, he landed another player that he is very familiar with.

[autotag]Jay Johnson[/autotag] has made another splash in the transfer portal. This time, he landed another player that he is very familiar with.

[autotag]Mac Bingham[/autotag] was part of Johnson’s 2019 recruiting class when he was at Arizona. Bingham has started the past four years for the Wildcats and had his best seasons last year as he had a .360 batting average with 20 doubles, two triples, 10 homers and 51 RBI.

He was a run-scoring machine, and he had a 98% fielding percentage in the outfield.

With the loss of [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] to the MLB draft, there are a couple of open spots in the LSU outfield.

[autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] seems to be a lock for one of the outfield spots. I think Bingham is a shoo-in for one of the other spots.

If he can get close to the production he had last season at Arizona or his production as a freshman for Johnson, the Tigers will be in a great spot.

Brayden Jobert drafted by Cardinals in 12th round

Another one of the unsung heroes for LSU this season has been picked in the 2023 MLB draft.

Another one of the unsung heroes for LSU this season has been picked in the 2023 MLB draft. Right fielder [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 12th round.

Jobert had a .301 batting average this year as he hit 11 doubles, two triples, 14 homers, and 49 RBI. He was the Tigers’ CWS leader in home runs (3), and he was second on the club in CWS RBI (7). He is also scheduled to graduate from LSU in the summer of 2023 with a degree in sports administration.

Jobert’s performance in the winner-take-all game three against Florida is a performance that Tiger fans will remember for a long time. He finished the night 4-for-7 with three runs scored, one double, one homer, and three RBI.

Jobert lands in a nice spot in St. Louis. He still has the option to stay in Baton Rouge or go pro. If he goes pro, he will be sent to one of the Cardinals’ minor league teams to begin his career.

YEAR OF THE TIGER: Reactions as LSU baseball wins the 7th national championship in program history

It was a celebration among Tiger nation on Monday night as LSU left no doubt in Game 3 against Florida.

For the seventh time in program history, the LSU Tigers baseball team is the College World Series champion.

Coach Jay Johnson’s team responded as well as he could have hoped after allowing a CWS-record 24 runs in a Game 2 loss to Florida, shelling the Gators in Game 3 en route to a dominating 18-4 win to seal the national championship.

[autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] pitched a gem on the mound as the Tigers didn’t even ultimately need [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag], and [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag], [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag], [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] all came in clutch on offense, recording three-plus hits each.

Here’s how LSU fans, athletes, alumni and media responded to the national title-clinching win.

Florida take Game 2 of CWS final in blowout fashion, forces Game 3 against LSU on Monday

The Tigers couldn’t close out the series after an explosive performance from the Gators’ offense.

Sunday was not a fun day at the ballpark for the LSU Tigers.

The Tigers entered Game 2 of the College World Series final one win away from a national title, but after a blowout 24-4 loss to Florida, they’ll have to play a decisive Game 3 on Monday night.

Despite the lopsided result, the game started off well for LSU as the Tigers scored first in the bottom of the first inning on a [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] RBI double.

Florida tied it up with a solo homer in the top of the second before LSU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead into the third inning. That is when everything went wrong. The Gators scored a couple of runs to tie the game and load the bases before [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] entered the game.

A [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] error gave Florida another chance and they capitalized with a grand slam to make it 7-3 Gators heading to the bottom of the third.

At that point, the route was on. LSU used a bevy of pitchers for the rest of the game as the Gators racked up 24 total runs and beat LSU 24-4. [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] hit a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth to give the Tigers their last run of the game.

The loss sets up a winner-take-all Game 3 on Monday night in Omaha.

LSU takes down Wake Forest to force winner-take-all game for spot in CWS finals

LSU will face Wake Forest on Thursday night for the right to take on Florida in the national championship series.

[autotag]Javen Coleman[/autotag] got the start on the mound for the Tigers as LSU faced elimination once again. This time it was against the team that put them in the losers’ bracket, Wake Forest.

Though the Tigers found themselves in an early hole, the bullpen came through once again as LSU won 5-2 to force a winner-take-all game on Thursday night against Wake for a spot in the College World Series finals.

The Demon Deacons loaded the bases in the second to chase Coleman from the mound and bring in [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag]. Wake Forest hit a two-RBI single against Money before he got the next hitter to ground into a fielder’s choice. [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] then entered out of the bullpen to get the Tigers out of the inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, LSU cut the lead in half when [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] hit an RBI double down the right-field line to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the bottom of the third, [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2. [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] followed that up with a three-run belly bomb to right field to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead after three innings of play.

Herring’s day was done in the top of the seventh inning after two runners reached base. He pitched 4.2 innings and allowed zero runs on three hits, six strikeouts, and a walk. [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] entered the game after him and shut the Demon Deacons down with two straight strikeouts to save the lead.

After Wake Forest put two runners on base in the top of the eighth inning, [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] replaced Guidry with two outs. Cooper got his first hitter to lineout to third base to end the inning and maintain the 5-2 lead.

Cooper walked the first batter he faced before getting the next three out to win the game 5-2. LSU will play Wake Forest on Thursday night at 6 p.m.

The winner gets to play against the Florida Gators for a national championship.

College World Series Preview: What LSU fans should know about Wake Forest

Here’s what LSU baseball is up against when it faces Wake Forest on Monday night.

LSU won its first game of the College World Series behind a dominant performance from pitcher [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag].

Skenes struck out 12, with nine of those Ks coming in the first five innings.

The offense did its job too, led by a standout performance from [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag].

LSU will face a completely different animal in Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons are the top overall seed and have been No. 1 in the country since taking it from LSU midseason.

Wake’s loaded at the plate and on the mound and one look at the stats sheet makes it obvious why they were so good.

Here’s what you need to know before LSU faces Wake Forest on Monday night.

Twitter reacts as LSU takes down Tennessee in Game 1 at College World Series in Omaha

The Tigers are 1-0 to begin their run in Omaha.

The first three games in the opening round of the 2023 College World Series were all decided by one run, but it looked like LSU was going to cruise to a win in its first game in Omaha against Tennessee.

The Tigers held a 5-0 lead in the eighth inning, but a Volunteers rally made things interesting. Still, a [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] bomb gave LSU some insurance as it pulled away to a 6-3 win in another dominant start from potential No. 1 pick [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag].

Now, the Tigers are moving on to the winners’ bracket on Monday night where they will meet No. 1 overall seed Wake Forest, which won 3-2 over No. 8 Stanford on Saturday. Neither LSU nor the Demon Deacons have lost in the tournament to this point.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to LSU’s win to kick off its run in Omaha.

LSU withstands Tennessee rally in CWS opener, will face No. 1 Wake Forest on Monday in winners’ bracket

LSU advances in the winners’ bracket to play Wake Forest on Monday!

LSU’s first game of the College World Series was an SEC matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers as the Tigers looked to advance to the winners’ bracket to face Wake Forest.

A late rally from the Vols made things interesting, but LSU managed to hold on for a 6-3 win to set up a matchup against the Demon Deacons on Monday.

[autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] put the Tigers on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer to give LSU a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the third inning, LSU extended their lead to 2-0 after [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit an RBI groundout to the pitcher. In the bottom of the sixth inning, LSU tacked on two more runs thanks to a [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] RBI triple and an RBI single by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Morgan hit a sacrifice fly to score [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] to extend the lead to 5-0 Tigers. In the top of the eighth, the Vols struck back.

Tennessee scored three runs as an RBI single chased [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] from the game and [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] was greeted with a 2-run homer to cut the lead to 5-3 heading into the ninth inning.

Skenes’ day was finished after he pitched 7.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits, 12 strikeouts, and a walk. [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] replaced Guidry to get the final out of the inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, Jobert got his third hit of the day as he tacked on another run via a solo homer to right field to make it 6-3.

Cooper stayed in to pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning. He sat down three of the four hitters he faced and the Tigers won 6-3.

LSU advances in the winners’ bracket to play Wake Forest on Monday night at 6 p.m. CT.
