Wisconsin cracks the top 25 in first USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

The first USA TODAY AFCA Coaches Poll is out:

Football season is here, almost. The first USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll dropped earlier today. The Wisconsin Badgers unsurprisingly made the cut, entering the season at No. 21.

I’m sure a big part of Wisconsin’s ranking is due to brand recognition. When an SEC or ACC coach fills out their top 25, there must be a thought toward No. 20 that Wisconsin annually slides in around that spot.

But another piece is the excitement and optimism about the program under Head Coach Luke Fickell. I doubt coaches across the country have a good grasp on how Phil Longo’s offense will work in year one. But it’s hard to bet against a program under Fickell and Longo given the track record of both coaches.

The Badgers are the No. 4-ranked Big Ten team in the poll, following No. 2 Michigan, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 7 Penn State.

Where Michigan football ranks in USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll after beating Ohio State

Did #Michigan’s win do enough to keep Ohio State from the playoff?

It was tight before it became a full-out romp. Michigan football went down into Columbus and absolutely squashed any inclination that the Buckeyes had on revenge.

By a full touchdown, the Wolverines actually increased the margin of victory from last year’s game, scoring three more points while holding rival Ohio State to four-points less than in 2021 — all on OSU’s home turf on a perfect Saturday afternoon.

While we wait for the latest College Football Playoff rankings as well as Michigan’s turn in the Big Ten Championship game against Purdue, the coaches across college football have weighed in via the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll. Now, the maize and blue are ranked No. 2 while Ohio State checks in at No. 5. Former opponent, Penn State, is now No. 7

Where Michigan football ranks in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll before Ohio State

The Game is upon us. #GoBlue

It was a shaky Saturday in Ann Arbor once Blake Corum went down with a knee injury late in the first half against Illinois, and while the Michigan football defense uncharacteristically got worse in the second half, the Wolverines found a way to win.

Thankfully for the maize and blue, when it comes to rankings, none of the other teams around them were particularly dominant in their own Week 12 matchup.

Georgia won by just 10 over Kentucky, Ohio State didn’t put the game at Maryland away until the final seconds thanks to a fumble return for a TD, TCU beat Baylor in the exact same fashion as Michigan, Tennessee got dominated by South Carolina, and USC was in a shootout with UCLA.

Michigan still has but one win that will be seen as a quality one, being Penn State, which has only lost to the Wolverines and Buckeyes this year. So, how do the coaches in college football see things after a wild Week 12?

In the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, the Wolverines came in ranked No. 3 with Ohio State, next week’s opponent, ranked No. 2. Penn State is ranked No. 10.

Where Michigan football ranks in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Just keep it going. #GoBlue

Michigan football did what it’s been doing all year — handle business through an efficient offense, thanks to a dominant run game, and a stifling defense. Though the ho-hum win over Nebraska isn’t necessarily going to turn a lot of heads given what Ohio State did to Indiana, the Wolverines are still firmly among the top teams in the nation.

But how do the coaches across college football see it?

In the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll, Michigan comes in ranked No. 3, while Ohio State remains No. 2. The Wolverines’ next opponent, the former No. 20 Illinois, fell out of the top 25 after losing to Purdue this past weekend. Former opponent Penn State is ranked No. 12.

Where Michigan football ranks in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Did #Michigan move up in the eyes of the coaches? #GoBlue

The world turned upside down on Saturday. Well, that might be stretching it. But there were numerous upsets and close calls.

Though Michigan football was in a fight at halftime, the final score at Rutgers looked as expected, 52-17. But rival Ohio State found itself in a gamelong fight against one-win Northwestern. Illinois was upended by short-handed and struggling Michigan State, certainly putting a dent in its ranking and status. In other leagues, Georgia manhandled Tennessee, LSU took down Alabama and Notre Dame blew out Clemson.

Sunday presented the first USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll since the College Football Playoff rankings came out, and the coaches often tend to follow suit. However, with so many close calls and upsets, the question is: How do the coaches see the CFB landscape now?

Michigan came in at No. 3, while future opponents Ohio State and Illinois ranked second and 20th, respectively. The Wolverines’ only ranked win, Penn State, is No. 15.

Here are the rest of the rankings.

Where Michigan football ranks in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Should #Michigan be ranked higher or lower?

Michigan football went out and did what it has been doing all season, essentially — bludgeoning teams through dominant run play while stopping the run. This week’s victim was rival Michigan State, a team that couldn’t stop Blake Corum and couldn’t get much of anything going on the ground.

Nor could it through the air in the second half.

Now that the Wolverines have handled business once again, they’ll move on to two unranked teams, Rutgers and Nebraska, before facing Illinois. In the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, Michigan will enter Piscataway ranked No. 4. Future opponents Illinois and Ohio State are ranked 13th and second, respectively. Penn State, Michigan’s Week 7 opponent, is 16th.

Where Michigan football ranks in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

#Michigan moved during the bye week.

Michigan football didn’t play on Saturday; it was on its bye week. But there’s still been a lot of buzz coming out of the Wolverines’ decisive victory over Penn State in Week 7. That win looks even better after the Nittany Lions destroyed Minnesota.

However, while Ohio State struggled for a half against Iowa, the Buckeyes impressed once everything was said and done. Tennessee continued to look good, even against lowly UT-Martin, and while Alabama didn’t look incredible, it still handily beat Mississippi State.

Last week, the Wolverines came in ranked No. 3, would they stay there?

It turns out, no. In the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, Michigan football is ranked No. 4, dropping one spot. Future opponents, Ohio State and Illinois, are ranked No. 2 and 19, respectively, while Penn State is ranked 13th.

Where Michigan football ranks in latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

Good win by #Michigan on Saturday! #GoBlue

Michigan football finally earned a signature win in the 2022 college football season. No. 10 Penn State came to Ann Arbor and was thoroughly dominated, 41-10.

While it was an impressive victory, a lot happened across the sport. Tennessee took down Alabama. Utah upended USC, and TCU downed Oklahoma State. Last week in the AP Top 25, Clemson leapfrogged Michigan, despite it having a similar game against Boston College as the Wolverines did Indiana. Will the win against a top-10 foe make the maize and blue look more impressive in the eyes of the coaches?

In the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, Michigan rose to No. 3. After the loss, Penn State moved down to 16. Upcoming opponent Illinois is ranked at No. 20, while Ohio State remains No. 2.

Here are the full rankings.

Where Michigan football ranks in Week 6 USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll

With Week 6 in the books, here is where Michigan football ranks in the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, powered by AFCA.

Michigan football had a challenging time in the first half of its second road trip of the season when it went to Bloomington to face an upstart Indiana squad.

Whether the Hoosiers caught the Wolverines off guard or Mike Hart’s collapse and seizure on the sideline stymied the maize and blue, the opening forays weren’t exactly what many expected. But then the team rallied, absolutely dominating the second half to win 31-10.

But how would the coaches across college football see the win?

In the latest USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, Michigan stayed the same, coming in at No. 4 overall. There was no change in the top 10, and the Wolverines face No. 10 Penn State on Saturday.
