NBA draft: Player comparisons for projected first-rounders

One of the most compelling ways to quickly study any draft class is to look at the NBA comparisons for all of the prospects available.

One of the most compelling ways to quickly study any draft class is to look at the NBA comparisons for all of the prospects available.

Now that the 2020 NBA draft is less than two weeks ago, all of the folks looking for a crash course in learning more about the players that will be available for selection can use this as a guide for the potential outlook of each projected first-round draft pick.

This exercise is far from foolproof, of course, considering that outcomes for each prospect will depend heavily on the teams that draft them as well as the roles they are given and the development process that surrounds them.

But this does give a sense of the archetype that each top prospect fits in so casual fans can get a more succinct view of the next generation entering the league.

While our own opinion was also included, we also studied comparison models and surveyed other experts, including conversations with NBA scouts around the league, to give the best context available. The results included were the most common responses.

Rich Paul shares heartfelt message about importance of Klutch Pro Day

Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul has been the target of anonymous attacks but he feels great about what he is doing for his players.

Klutch Sports Group CEO and founder Rich Paul has been the subject of a lot of unwarranted attacks published in print, as well as just general resentment around the league because of his friendship with LeBron James and the success of Klutch Sports. After putting together another unprecedented event, the Klutch Pro Day, for projected first-rounders Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Maxey, Paul wanted to share a message of encouragement and support for someone who aspires to be the next Rich Paul.

In the message, Paul included a shot at all the anonymous agents taking shots at him over the past few weeks and also shared that being discouraged is ultimately the thing that kills dreams more than people saying what they say with a photo of the Klutch players who came to the Pro Day in Los Angeles.

LeBron James also sounded off in the comments, showing support for his longtime friend and agent.

Kentucky coach John Calipari compared Tyrese Maxey to Jamal Murray

Calipari saw similarities between Maxey and Murray due to their abilities on both ends of the floor.

On Thursday, projected first-round Tyrese Maxey participated in the Klutch Sports Group Pro Day in Los Angeles with Anthony Edwards, an event that had LeBron James, Anthony Davis and other clientele of Rich Paul in attendance.

Maxey went through several on-court drills throughout the workout, which was televised on ESPN2. In one sequence, the former Kentucky guard got particularly hot from 3-point range and was locked in. Of course, a 1-on-0 workout is hardly beneficial to teams but Maxey showed off his improved game.

During the segment, Kentucky head coach John Calipari spoke on the broadcast about his former player. Calipari compared Maxey to Jamal Murray, who played at Kentucky during the 2015-16 season, due to his ability on both sides of the ball and his hustle on every play.

Tyrese Maxey reminded of Jamal Murray. Jamal is a little bit bigger, probably 6-foot-5 but the same kind of player — on the ball, off the ball, fight to defend, deflect balls, rebounds above the rim. I laugh, every day I walked in the kid had a smile on his face. It’s a spirit about him of what he could do. You look at him, what you see, where you think he could be, he goes.

Our kids here are not pigeon-holed into one position; they’re taught basketball. When you watch him, how he shoots it, his runners, his handle, his physicalness, if anybody passes on him in a certain range, it’s kinda like gonna be the Jamal thing; he’s going to be that guy.

Maxey averaged 14 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 31 games played last season with the Wildcats, earning Second Team All-SEC honors in the process. He is projected to be a lottery pick given his ability to impact games on both ends of the floor.

The New York Knicks are said to be interested in Maxey, according to a recent report. The Knicks have been rumored into wanting to trade down into the middle of the first round in the draft, and if they did, they would target Maxey.

In all likelihood, Maxey will be taken by the middle of the first round but if he slips further than that, a team could potentially be getting a steal given his potential in the backcourt.

LeBron James defends Rich Paul after Klutch Sports’ ESPN Pro Day

LeBron let them have it.

NBA agents were very much so in their feelings after Rich Paul hosted an Pro Day for Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Maxey as they prepare for the NBA draft.

Because it was broadcast on ESPN 2, they felt like Paul was giving his prospects “unwarranted attention” and that the NBA should’ve stopped it. This was just the latest in a series of anonymous complaints about Rich Paul and Klutch.

LeBron James has had enough of those complaints.

He came to the defense of his agent and close friend in his Instagram story on Friday night. He sent a message to those anonymous agents and, uh, it was not pleasant.

*Warning: There is some NSFW language in this post*

He also commented on one of Paul’s Instagram posts defending him and what he’s doing.

FACTS!!!!! Say it again and louder or the people in the back. You know what, no need to repeat yourself!!!!”

Translation: Get with it or get lost, agents. Plain and simple. Good on LeBron for defending his guy.

NBA agents are mad at Rich Paul for hosting a Pro Day for his rookies

Here we go again.

Another week, another complaint about how Rich Paul and Klutch Sports are conducting their business.

Klutch Sports hosted a live Pro Day for Georgia’s Anthony Edwards and Kentucky’s Tyrese Maxey — two players they’re representing in this upcoming NBA draft.

The Pro Day was nationally televised live on ESPN 2 Thursday night. Other Klutch clients including LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Trae Young and Draymond Green were all in attendance to watch the workout.

That, apparently, is a problem according to other NBA agents.

Other agents are taking issue with some “unwarranted exposure” being given to Edwards and Maxey, according to reporting from the New York Post’s Marc Berman.

According to a source, some agents were unhappy with the setup, feeling it was unwarranted exposure for Paul’s clients, but the NBA let it go on.

That’s the complaint? Give me a break. It sounds like agents are complaining just to complain at this point.

Look, this workout very clearly skirts the rules passed down by the NBA on how teams are supposed to do their pre-draft scouting process. Per the Athletic’s Shams Charania, players are supposed to conduct in-market pre-draft workouts with the NBA market closest to them.

They’ll record a 45-minute workout video, go through medical, strength and agility testing and then get to interview with teams virtually later on.

So this workout broadcast nationally on ESPN gives teams a bit of extra tape on both Edwards and Maxey. That is absolutely an advantage. But there’s also nothing in the NBA’s rules that says this is wrong.

There are better complaints to make here than “unwarranted exposure.” You could argue that certain teams with players in the building (looking at you, Warriors) might be getting an eye on these guys early. Still wouldn’t quite buy that as a problem, but you can argue it.

But unwarranted exposure? That’s a complaint just to complain. And it’s what agents just keep doing with Rich Paul and Klutch.

Just last week an agent anonymously complained in The Athletic about Paul’s relationship with LeBron James. This week, another is complaining about how Paul has clients working out on ESPN 2. Next week, who knows?

This reads as jealousy, as Stephen A. Smith pointed out last week.

The bottom line is that Paul is just the best agent in the game right now. He has the leverage, power and connections to pull off things that have never been done before. And, rightfully, he’s using it.

Instead of complaining about it, other agents should find a way to replicate it.

LeBron, others attended Klutch Sports’ Pro Day with Edwards, Maxey

LeBron James and Anthony Davis were among the NBA players in attendance at the Klutch Sports Pro Day with Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Maxey.

Lakers teammates LeBron James and Anthony Davis were among the NBA players in attendance on Thursday to watch the Klutch Sports Group Pro Day featuring Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Maxey at the Sports Academy in Los Angeles, California.

In addition to James and Davis, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young and rapper Quavo were also on hand to watch the two projected first-round picks perform various drills in front of teams, scouts and executives.

The event was televised on ESPN2 as the footage gave the basketball community its first look at Edwards and Maxey since they last played in March. The two players were able to show off their overall games and improvements in various on-court drills.

The drills and sets run during pro days are often heavily controlled by agents but the event can provide some information on any improvements or tweaks made by the player. The most important facet of a pro day is the ability to meet individually with a player so teams likely wanted to take advantage ahead of the NBA draft on Nov. 18.

Klutch Sports to have ‘Pro Day’ for draft picks scheduled to air on ESPN2

Anthony Edwards and Tyrese Maxey are both with Klutch Sports and expected to be first-round picks in the 2020 Draft in November.

[jwplayer 5SHLtbNs-z6KDnl0B]

As the NBA and the NBPA are approaching Friday’s self-imposed deadline to make changes to the current collective bargaining agreement or agree to yet again extend the deadline, the one hard date on the NBA calendar right now is the NBA Draft on Nov. 18. Klutch Sports Group has two players scheduled to be top pros in the coming draft and both of them will be featured in an event we haven’t really seen at the NBA level.

Potential No. 1 pick Anthony Edwards and projected 1st rounder Tyrese Maxey, both Klutch Sports players, will have their own Pro Day, which will include workouts and interviews, airing Thursday evening at 8 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. LeBron and Rich Paul promoted it on Wednesday.

We’ve seen some things at the NFL level all the time but with there being such a long gap between the last time these players had a game, they are probably doing it to show that the time off has helped them get better since their last college games.

Report: Knicks ‘seriously’ considering trading down in the NBA Draft

The Knicks are considering trading down in the NBA Draft with former Kentucky guard Tyrese Maxey on their radar.

[jwplayer LFaHIWQf]

The New York Knicks are reportedly seriously considering trading down from the eighth overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post.

The report indicated that the Knicks have apparently had internal conversations about moving back, potentially with a team in the 12-15 range. New York would want to obtain a young player, on a rookie contract, in a potential trade while maintaining a lottery pick this year.

However, the Knicks would standpat at No. 8 should either LaMelo Ball or James Wiseman remain on the board when they are on the clock. The organization believes Ball and Wiseman are the best prospects in the draft and would select either one if they fall.

[lawrence-related id=23181]

Of course, the likelihood of that happening remains to be seen. Ball and Wiseman are both projected to be top-five picks and figure to be off of the board at No. 8. Ball is projected to be selected first in the latest 2020 Rookie Wire NBA Mock Draft while Wiseman is slated to go second.

According to the report, if both Ball and Wiseman are gone, the Knicks would likely target former Kentucky guard Tyrese Maxey in the middle of the first round, which is his projected range. The Knicks likely believe Maxey would be a good fit within their new system.

Maxey averaged 14 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 31 games played last season with the Wildcats, earning Second Team All-SEC honors in the process. He is projected to be a lottery pick given his ability to impact games on both ends of the floor.

The 2020 NBA Draft is scheduled to take place on Nov. 18.
