Texas guard Tyrese Hunter finds his shot in 72-54 win over Iowa State

Texas throttles Iowa State, 72-54.

Texas guard Tyrese Hunter has found his shot. That is, if his performance against Iowa State is an indicator of future success.

Hunter lit the net on fire early against his former team leading Texas scorers with 15 points. Sir’Jabari Rice and Marcus Carr added 15 and 13 points respectively.

Caleb Grill, who undercut Dillon Mitchell in the last meeting, sat out the game with back pain. Albeit, his absence didn’t make the win any less satisfying.

Burnt orange faithful showed up ready to make noise. Texas gave plenty to cheer about hitting 56% of its first half three point baskets.

Three Longhorns reached double-digit points at the first half marker. Arterio Morris scored all of his eight points in the first half.

As a team, Texas shot 54.8% from the field in the first period. Rodney Terry’s team cooled off in the second half to finish with a 47% shooting night. The teams played to a 25-25 draw in the second half after Texas led 47-29 at halftime.

Texas improves to 22-6 with three games to play. A conference record of 11-4 ties the team with Kansas for first place in the Big 12.

Next up: Baylor (20-8) on Saturday at 1 pm CT.

No. 5 Texas unable to overcome sloppy offense in loss to No. 9 Kansas

Texas has to get ahold of its turnover issue following Monday’s loss to Kansas.

Texas has its best basketball team in a long time. Albeit, the team has a turnover problem.

Turnovers proved costly on Monday as Kansas made Texas pay for being loose with the basketball. When the Longhorns weren’t dribbling the basketball out of control or as high as eye-level, Rodney Terry’s team struggled to make good passes.

Despite Kansas’ double-digit first half lead, Texas got off to a quick second half start and cut the lead to one point. After getting within one point at 47-46, the Longhorns went cold.

The 88-80 loss doesn’t erase the strong week the team had last week, but it does dampen the team’s hopes for a No. 1 seed. The Longhorns are still alone in first place in the Big 12 conference with a record of 8-3.

Despite solid positioning in conference standings, the turnover issue is one they’ll need to figure out if they want to accomplish their goals. The Longhorns will face the West Virginia Mountaineers next on Saturday.

Social media reacts as No. 11 Texas topples No. 2 Gonzaga

Texas’ win over Gonzaga sparked tons of excitement.

Texas’ 2022-23 college basketball season is off to a fantastic start with a statement victory over No. 2 Gonzaga. Chris Beard’s squad proved themselves as a legitimate contender on the big stage with the win.

The Moody Center was rocking behind an inspired Longhorns performance.  Every shot Texas made from start to finish was responded to by an erupting crowd reaction. A pair of Dillon Mitchell dunks toward the end of the game had the roof ready to fall off.

It was a dominant showing for Texas at every position group but guards Tyrese Hunter and Marcus Carr led the charge. Hunter finished with a career-high 26 points in this premier matchup. Carr added 16 points of his own as the Texas backcourt looks like a force to be reckoned with.

Texas’ victory over Gonzaga sparked tons of excitement on social media. Here is a look at some of Twitter’s best reactions to the Horns ‘massive win on Wednesday night.

2023 NBA Mock Draft 1.0: An early look at the top prospects next year

Rookie Wire took a very early look at the next rookie class and some of the top prospects to monitor over the course of the 2022-23 season.

With the basketball world over a month removed from the NBA draft, many have started to look ahead to the next rookie class and which prospects may be available.

The class is headlined by French phenom Victor Wembanyama, who is considered one of the top prospects in recent memory. He has performed well in the top basketball league in France and looks to already be locked in as the top pick in 2023.

Elsewhere, there are several other prospects that will be worth monitoring over the course of next season. The rankings will certainly change but it can be a productive exercise to see how prospects moved up and down draft boards ahead of next year.

Rookie Wire took a very early look at the next rookie class and some of the top prospects to monitor as the 2022-23 season approaches in a couple of months.

Note: The order of the draft was determined by the reverse championship odds set by Tipico Sportsbook. The 2023 draft will only have 59 picks after the Bulls were stripped of their second-round pick by the NBA due to a tampering violation involving the signing of Lonzo Ball.

Predicting Texas’ starting five after the Tyrese Hunter commitment

Texas’ starting five will be very interesting next season.

After several years of disappointing March Madness appearances under Shaka Smart, the Longhorns exercised their demons and advanced to the second round under Chris Beard.

The former Texas Tech coach is looking to build on his success that he had in his first season as the Texas head coach, and he seems to be acquiring even more talent than he was last year. Prior to this past season, Beard was able to build up Texas’ roster by bringing in elite transfers such as Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr.

This offseason, Beard not only brought in one of the top transfers in Tyrese Hunter, who won Big 12 Freshman of the Year, but was also able to bring in a strong recruiting class. The class is headlined by five-stars Arterio Morris and Dillon Mitchell who are both expected to provide majors boosts to the roster.

However, even with all this new accumulated talent and returning talent, the Longhorns are still poised to be a shooting deficient team that lacks a big man. The lack of big man remains true even if Dylan Disu chooses to return, as he is going through the NBA draft process. They will have talented individuals, but whether or not all of these players can mesh is yet to be seen. Beard might have to go against his instinct and have a much quicker offense in order to make up for the lack of shooting and size.

Here is what I think the starting five will look like, using just the players currently on the roster.

Texas basketball shoots up four spots in CBS Sports’ preseason top 25

Texas’ recent addition of Tyrese Hunter moves them up in CBS Sports’ preseason rankings.

The expectations for year two under Chris Beard are a tad lower than last season, but still continue to grow.

With the Longhorns bringing in six top 30 transfers a year ago, many viewed them as a top five team in the country. But even with all the new talent they struggled at times throughout the season. While they were always able to hang around in the rankings, the team struggled with three point shooting and against teams with dominant big men.

The roster construction ahead of this next season is interesting to say the least, but with the addition of Big 12 Freshman of the Year Tyrese Hunter, Texas received a boost in CBS Sports’ preseason top 25 rankings.

The Longhorns moved up four spots from No. 16 to No. 12 in the rankings, and here is why.

The Longhorns’ ranking is based on Texas returning the top two scorers from a team that finished 15th at KenPom – namely Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr, each of whom is using a fifth year of eligibility. Chris Beard is adding to that core a top-15 recruiting class highlighted by two five-star prospects (Dillon Mitchell and Arterio Morris) and Iowa State transfer Tyrese Hunter.

While the Longhorns have a talented backcourt with Carr and Hunter along with the incoming freshman Arterio Morris, it is understandable to have concern as to how everyone will get the touches they need. Texas also landed New Mexico State guard Sir’Jabari Rice, which is another person who is used to having the ball in their hands.

Even with the returning players coupled with those incoming via the transfer portal or high school ranks, the team still lacks a big man. Until Texas adds a true big man, there is legitimate reasons to doubt them ahead of this next season.
