Game Preview: No. 7 Texas travels to Iowa State

The intensity ramps up this week against the Cyclones.

The stage is set for what could be an epic battle in Ames. The No. 7 Texas Longhorns (9-1) take on the Iowa State Cyclones (6-4) on Saturday night.

The Cyclones have had the better of the Longhorns in the last four meetings. The team has won three of those four contests against Texas, and its lone loss nearly fell in its favor last season.

Despite opinions to the contrary, this game means more to Texas than to Iowa State because of what is at stake. The Longhorns are in the hunt for a Big 12 title and College Football Playoff berth.

The Cyclones are bowl eligible already. Even at best they probably can’t earn as much as an Alamo Bowl bid. All the team can do is play spoiler against Texas one last time.

Let’s preview the matchup between the two teams.

Iowa State player warns of surprises that Texas should take seriously

Prepare for Matt Campbell to open up the bag of tricks this week.

Iowa State is almost certainly going to break tendencies and use trickery in an attempt to beat Texas. The Longhorns must come prepared for surprises. It’s the Cyclones’ only chance to win.

One player on the team might have insinuated that tendency breakers are on the way. Iowa State guard Jarrod Hufford put a target on his back in his comments on the game, but provided potential insight into how the Cyclones are about to attack.

In his comments, Hufford shared the following thoughts about Texas.

“They are going to come in here on senior night in the dark. I don’t think they really know what is going to be coming for them.”

Without saying it, the veteran guard all but spelled out that Iowa State is going to break tendency. For that reason, the Longhorns can’t be surprised when they see several plays from the Cyclones that they haven’t seen on film.

Hufford might be talking about how his team will test the Longhorns defense, but the Texas offense will need to prepare for surprises as well. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian will need to show up with plays that work against a myriad of defensive schemes.

Trickery is coming on Saturday. The Longhorns will look to overcome it before a national audience at 7 p.m. CT on Fox.
