Sooner Summit could make big impact on Oklahoma recruiting

Sooner Summit could make big impact on Oklahoma recruiting

The Sooners Summit was traversed.

Last weekend, a group of Oklahoma football commits and targets took a visit to Norman to check out the campus.

Visitors included targets offensive linemen Tristan Leigh and Savion Byrd, running back Camar Wheaton and wide receiver Jalil Farooq.  The event was organized and headlined by top-ranked QB and Oklahoma commit Caleb Williams.

Rivals recruiting directors Mike Farrell and Adam Gorney think the Sooner Summit will have big implications on Oklahoma’s 2021 class.

“It was a major recruiting move orchestrated by Williams and it should pay off in a big way. First, because Oklahoma has a lot to offer and lots of top recruits are highly interested anyway and also because this was a one-of-a-kind special event with lots of top kids on campus.” Gorney said.

“And it will work,” Farrell wrote. “This is a big deal and, if Leigh, Farooq, Wheaton and others end up at Oklahoma, this could be a huge reason. This Summit might be a difference maker for the Sooners.”

Oklahoma currently hold the No. 14 class in the nation, just one spot behind Texas for the top-ranked class in the Big 12.

The Sooners are set to kick off their season with a matchup versus Missouri State on Sept. 12.

Tweets from Oklahoma recruits’ ‘Sooner Summit’ that took place on OU’s campus

The secret is no longer a secret. Here are the tweets from OU recruits’ ‘Sooner Summit’ that took place on campus over the weekend.

The secret is no longer a secret.

Oklahoma’s 2021 recruits, led by five-star and No. 1 overall quarterback Caleb Williams, took to Norman, Oklahoma, this weekend for an unofficial, official visit weekend.

Let’s explain: a high school senior and his family setup an entire visit weekend for some of Oklahoma’s top targets that typically takes 25 or more Sooners’ coaching, support and recruiting staff members put together. The recruits had lunch and dinner together each day since Friday and took in events like Top Golf and touring Oklahoma’s campus the last three days.

These recruits include five-star running back Camar Wheaton who arrived on Saturday. Four-star offensive tackles Savion Byrd and Tristan Leigh were there since Friday alongside four-star wide receiver Jalil Farooq. A handful of 2022 recruits were in attendance as well.

It’s a major weekend for Oklahoma in the midst of a pandemic and a dead period where schools can’t unofficially or officially host anyone. When the ‘Sooner Summit’ recruits were on campus, coaches could not have any contact with them. Yet, this thing went as smoothly as a normal recruiting weekend for the Sooners.

Here are some of the tweets from the event.

Five commits, 3 targets from 2021 recruiting class reportedly visiting Oklahoma’s campus

This weekend is taking shape for Oklahoma in a major way on the recruiting trail. More than a handful of recruits are visiting on their own.

This weekend is taking shape for Oklahoma in a major way on the recruiting trail.

The NCAA has mandated a mandatory dead period that has been extended through Sept. 30. This means no visits, officially or unofficially, can take place for any recruits. Every football program has put together virtual visits for recruits to go through, but none are seeing the campus in person.

That hasn’t stopped others from still visiting the campus themselves.

Recruits can visit campuses without seeing or being toured around by any coaches. Oklahoma is having some major talent visiting this weekend.

The ‘Sooner Summit’ has been put together by five-star and No. 1 overall quarterback Caleb Williams. Joining him are commitments Danny Stutsman, Ethan Downs, Clayton Smith and Cullen Montgomery according to director of 247Sports recruiting Steve Wiltfong.

Some major targets, including a five-star or two could be joining.

“Some of the key targets expected include five-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh, Top247 receiver Jalil Farooq, Top247 offensive tackle Savion Byrd, potentially five-star running back Camar Wheaton and maybe another coveted offensive lineman in Bryce Foster,” Wiltfong said. “It’s not out of the question that Oklahoma ultimately lands every prospect listed there.”

Leigh and Foster are two of the best offensive linemen in the country, Wheaton is a five-star running back and Farooq is a four-star wide receiver according to Rivals.

Oklahoma currently has 13 commitments for the 2021 recruiting class and the class is ranked 16th in the country.

Top 2022 offensive tackle will reportedly visit Oklahoma’s campus this weekend

Despite the recruiting dead period being extended to Sept. 30, Oklahoma recruits are making their way to campus.

Despite the recruiting dead period being extended to Sept. 30, Oklahoma recruits are making their way to campus.

The Sooners can’t host any recruits on unofficial or official visits. That, though, hasn’t stopped recruits from visiting other campuses themselves and checking out the town.

Five-star and No. 1 overall quarterback Caleb Williams is making his way down and it appears he will be joined by four-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh.

The Fairfax, Virginia, native is rated as a four-star recruit on Rivals and the 28th best player in the entire country. Leigh is rated as the fourth best offensive tackle and the second best player in the state of Virginia.

Oklahoma is battling college football powers LSU, Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson for Leigh’s signature. The Sooners got a big boost in Leigh’s recruitment whenever Williams’ committed on July 4.

Offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh is also after five-star guard Bryce Foster, four-star tackle and top-100 recruit Savion Byrd and has three-star guard Cullen Montgomery committed.

Ohio State included in 5-star 2021 offensive tackle’s top five

Five-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh out of Fairfax, Virginia includes Ohio State in his top five released Thursday.

The Ohio State football program has already put together one whale of a recruiting class for 2021, but there’s still a little more room left with some big fish still out there to hook.

One of those is five-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh out of Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Virginia. The six-foot, five-inch, 270-pounder is rated as the No. 3 offensive tackle and eleventh overall recruit for in the entire 2021 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He would be a huge addition to what is already widely considered the top recruiting class in the country.

And as a bit of good news for Ohio State, Leigh included the Buckeyes in his top five released on Thursday.

The other four schools in Leigh’s announcement include Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson, and LSU.

The Buckeye staff has begun to increase its efforts for Leigh as of late, and where he ends up is pretty wide open, though most experts believe he is a slight lean to Clemson at the moment.

We’ll stay on top of any further developments with his recruitment.

Oklahoma makes top-5 for top-30 2021 recruit

The Sooners have made four-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh’s list of final five schools

After a star-studded Fourth of July, Oklahoma is back on the trail.

The Sooners have made four-star offensive tackle Tristan Leigh’s list of final five schools. The 6-foot-6, 290-pound product out of Virginia has 38 Division I offers in total, but has significantly narrowed down the list of his next destination.

Leigh is the No. 4 overall offensive tackle according to Rivals, and the second overall player in the state of Virginia.

Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and LSU round out the rest of his top five schools.

Caleb Williams, one of Oklahoma’s most recent commits and the No. 1 quarterback in the class of 2021, has long vied for Leigh to join him at the next level.

Oklahoma currently holds the No. 16 overall class in 2021, per Rivals.

The Sooners are currently set to begin their season on September 5 versus Missouri State. The Big Ten and Pac-12 have opted for conference only schedules for the 2020 season, but no such decision has been made by the Big 12 conference yet.

5-star Tristan Leigh names his top schools

Five-star offensive tackle recruit Tristan Leigh has named his top schools including the Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers.

Five-star offensive tackle recruit Tristan Leigh has named his top schools. Leigh is considered one of the best recruits in the class of 2021. He’s the 13th rated prospect in his class and is favored to join the Clemson Tigers.

Leigh is 6-6 and weighs 285 pounds. He plays football at Robinson Secondary High School in Fairfax, Virginia.

He released his top schools via Twitter:

Leigh puts Clemson, Georgia, FSU, Virginia, LSU, Florida, Virginia Tech, Miami, Penn State, Oklahoma, Maryland, UCF, Ohio State, Alabama, and USC among his top fifteen. Fans can expect Leigh to trim his top schools soon.

Can Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs secure a commitment from Leigh? Matt Luke is an excellent offensive line recruiter and should never be counted out.

That being said, Georgia secured commitments from an excellent pair of 2020 offensive tackles in Broderick Jones (five-star) and Tate Ratledge. UGA landed more offensive line recruits in 2020, but those two are favored to take over for NFL first round picks Andrew Thomas and Isaiah Wilson.

Georgia may not have room for another elite offensive tackle commit, especially with Matt Luke pursuing in-state five-star Amarius Mims. Leigh is likely a long-shot for the Dawgs.
