Panthers TE coach John Lilly: It’s time for Tommy Tremble to take another step

Panthers TE coach John Lilly shared his optimism for the growth of soon-to-be 23-year-old Tommy Tremble.

Tommy Tremble’s breakout season is still loading.

New Carolina Panthers tight end coach John Lilly spoke briefly to reporters on Wednesday afternoon. When asked about the development of Tremble, Lilly said he thinks 2023 should serve as a stepping stone for the talented young pass catcher.

“I think one big thing with Tommy is—he entered the league at 20 years old,” Lilly said to an inquiring David Newton. “So, he’s got two years in the league, and he’s still just 22 right now. I think he maybe has a birthday next month.

“But he’s still a young player. You look at most of the guys that were drafted and they are older than what he is. I think it’s kinda time for him to take another step. I think he made a great decision in the offseason—he stayed here, he trained all last offseason. Been very impressed by the way he’s approached the day-by-day and trying to pick it all up and take it to the field.”

Thus far, over those first two years in the league, he’s taken 39 receptions, 354 yards and four touchdowns to the field. A third-round pick in 2021, Tremble was expected to help rejuvenate Carolina’s tight end room—one that has not produced much since the days of Greg Olsen.

As, Lilly noted, there’s still plenty of time left for Tremble to grow into those expectations. He is currently younger or just as old as four of the top five tight ends drafted a month ago—Dalton Kincaid (23), Sam LaPorta (22), Luke Musgrave (22) and Luke Schoonmaker (24).

But that little tidbit will not last much longer—as Tremble will, in fact, be celebrating his 23rd birthday on June 2. Happy birthday, Tommy!

Every Notre Dame NFL draft pick since 2000

There have been 102 Notre Dame players drafted since 2000. How many more will hear their names called this week?

Notre Dame’s 21st century didn’t start the way anyone would have liked as the Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham, and Charlie Weis eras all left something to be desired but the ship changed course under Brian Kelly who led the Irish back to the brink of the greatness that is expected for Notre Dame football.

Since 2000, more than 100 different Notre Dame football players have had their names called in the NFL draft.  Several others have signed as undrafted free agents but we’ll focus on those who were drafted for now.

Last year saw Kyle Hamilton and Kyren Williams have their names called.  This spring Michael Mayer and Isaiah Foskey will certainly hear theirs early, and others will join them in days two and three of the draft.

So who are the 102 who have had their names called since 2000?

Who wound up having the best careers and who didn’t have the career they or you were hoping?

You can almost certainly name plenty but there are some former Notre Dame greats you’ve likely forgotten about as well.  Here are the 102…and counting.

Notre Dame’s top 25 3-star recruits since 2010

Just because someone is a three-star doesn’t mean they can’t be great.

In the world of recruiting, rankings clearly matter. It’s no shock that when you look at the best teams nationally, they’re the ones who usually ranked the highest in team recruiting rankings during the previous three or four years.  Maybe the top team doesn’t always have the top class, but you can bet they’re in or right there with the top-five nationally.

Another key part of recruiting comes to finding those diamonds in the rough.  That isn’t to knock three-star talents, but the hype around them clearly isn’t the same when a five-star prospect visits campus or commits to a program.

We decided to go back and rank the top three-star players Notre Dame brought to campus dating to the start of Brian Kelly’s run at Notre Dame that began with the 2010 recruiting class. Here are the top 25 of those such players in the last roughly dozen years.

The 247Sports composite was used in each player’s star rating for this piece.

Panthers TE Tommy Tremble welcomes uncle Bert Watts to Carolina

Panthers TE Tommy Tremble tweeted out a message for his uncle Bert, who the team hired as their new safeties coach on Thursday.

It’s been somewhat of a family affair for the Carolina Panthers and their new-look coaching staff this offseason.

Head coach Frank Reich will be united with his daughter Hannah, who was hired to the team’s marketing department in early January, back at home in Charlotte. Former team reporter Caroline Cann is also making her return to The Queen City, coming along with husband and new passing game coordinator Parks Frazier.

And on Thursday morning, we learned—through a report from NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport—that the Panthers are hiring former Denver Broncos outside linebackers coach Bert Watts as their new safeties coach. Watts, coincidentally, is the uncle of Carolina tight end Tommy Tremble—who acknowledged the news a few hours after it broke . . .

Watts actually played a part in Tremble’s career path, as documented in a story from 2020 by Patrick Engel of InsideNDSports. Tommy’s mother Abigail sent Bert, her brother and defensive coordinator for UC Davis, high school film of the young tight end—to which replied:

“He goes, ‘Uh, yeah. He’s going to be really good,’” Abigail recalled. “I learned all about hip-flipping and what was important.”

Well, they’ll have plenty of time for hip-flipping now.

WATCH: Sam Darnold leads Panthers to TD on 1st touch of Week 17

On the very first possession of the game, the Panthers and Sam Darnold drove right down the field for a six-play, 75-yard TD touch against the Buccaneers.

The Carolina Panthers are in a must-win situation for their Week 17 matchup against the Tampa Buccaneers. And it appears as though the offense got the memo.

On the very first touch of the game, the visiting Panthers took less than four minutes to trek downfield for a clean six-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. Quarterback Sam Darnold led the poised attack, completing all four of his passing attempts for 60 yards and the score.

Those six points ended up in the hands of tight end Tommy Tremble, who reeled in a smooth 17-yard strike. It was Tremble’s third touchdown of the 2022 campaign.

Darnold also connected with wideouts DJ Moore, Shi Smith and Laviska Shenault Jr. for gains of 26 yards, 11 yards and six yards—respectively. Running back D’Onta Foreman added in nine rushing yards of his own off a pair of carries.

Since taking over the starting reins in Week 12, Darnold has posted the fifth-highest passer rating (104.3) in the NFL.

5 realistic Browns trade targets with Tuesday’s deadline approaching

The Browns might be in a position to acquire some young talent in need of a change of scenery. Here are five candidates who fit the bill.

The Cleveland Browns are more than likely going to be sellers as this year’s trade deadline approaches. However, they will never bat an eye at an opportunity to acquire young talent in need of a change of scenery either.

While it was draft day, general manager Andrew Berry made a move to go up and get Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. This Spring he sent shockwaves through the league, acquiring wide receiver Amari Cooper for just a fifth round pick. This also does not include the massive trade he made this past  Spring to upgrade at quarterback as well.

Berry has also been known to make low-risk trades as well. Swapping linebacker Mack Wilson for pass rusher Chase Winovich was a non-consequential move made, as was acquiring linebacker Deion Jones for a pick swap.

As the deadline approaches, the Browns will have the opportunity to both make non-consequential trades and acquire young talent. Here are five realistic trades the Browns could make to add talent to their roster.
