Browns host Joe Flacco, Daylen Baldwin, 9 others for workout on Friday

The Browns hosted 11 for a workout today

The news out of Berea today as the Cleveland Browns hunt for another quarterback to stick on their roster was that veteran gunslinger Joe Flacco was in town for a workout. According to Aaron Wilson, however, Flacco was not the only player to work out today in Berea. Former Cleveland wide receiver Daylen Baldwin returned to try out for the Browns, but he and Flacco were just two among 11 the team hosted as they prepare for the Pittsburgh Steelers this week.

With Deshaun Watson sidelined for the rest of the season, the Browns now have just fifth round rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson and P.J. Walker as the two quarterbacks on their roster. They are expected to add another to their roster soon.

Here are all 11 players that found their way into the facility as the team looks to potentially shake up their practice squad and give Flacco some targets to throw to during his workout.

49ers roster moves: TE Ross Dwelley is back

The #49ers announced 2 more signings.

The 49ers on Monday announced a pair of signings, including the re-signing of free agent tight end Ross Dwelley. They also officially announced the addition of defensive back Myles Hartsfield.

Dwelley joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent following the 2018 draft. He developed into the team’s second TE during the 2019 campaign where he also earned six starts while playing a full 16-game slate. He held that TE2 distinction until being overtaken by Charlie Woerner during the 2021 campaign.

Still, Dwelley’s versatility has made him a valuable cog in San Francisco’s offense and now he’s returning to battle for a roster spot in his sixth season.

Hartsfield’s signing was first reported last week. He spent the last three seasons with the Panthers after they signed him following the 2020 draft where he wasn’t selected.

In three seasons he played in 41 games with 19 starts. Hartsfield posted 118 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks and seven pass breakups.

49ers to sign versatile former Panthers DB Myles Hartsfield

The #49ers have agreed to a deal with versatile DB Myles Hartsfield per Mike Garafolo.

The 49ers on Saturday agreed to a contract with versatile defensive back Myles Hartsfield according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.

Hartfield was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Panthers following the 2020 NFL draft.  He played in all 16 games for Carolina as a rookie with most of his contributions coming on special teams. By his second year he’d carved out a larger defensive role where he played all over the field for Carolina. He carried that job as a free safety and nickel corner over the 2021 and 2022 seasons where he started 19 of the 25 games he played.

The Panthers didn’t offer a restricted free agent tender to Hartsfield and allowed him to become an unrestricted free agent. He wound up back with 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, who was the Panthers’ interim head coach last season.

Hartsfield gives the 49ers some needed depth at safety, but he could wind up taking on a variety of jobs on San Francisco’s defense with Tashaun Gipson and Talanoa Hufanga manning the two safety spots. There’s a chance the 49ers push Hartsfield into the slot corner competition with fellow free agent signing CB Isaiah Oliver and second-year CB Samuel Womack.

In 41 games with 19 starts, Hartsfield has 118 tackles, five tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, seven pass breakups and a forced fumble.

49ers agree to terms with former Panthers DB Myles Hartsfield

Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, former Panthers DB Myles Hartsfield is set to rejoin Steve Wilks in San Francisco—agreeing to terms on a deal with the 49ers.

On Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers made their decision on Myles Hartsfield official—choosing not to tender the restricted free agent. Now, on Saturday, he’s made his.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, the versatile defensive back has agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers. He will, of course, be rejoining former interim head coach and new defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

The Panthers signed the Ole Miss product as an undrafted free agent back in 2020. Hartsfield didn’t have a primary position coming into Carolina—at least initially—practicing as both a safety and a running back during the summer.

Since making the 53-man roster that year, he’s gone on to play in 41 games—with 19 starts—over the past three seasons. Hartsfield, who served as the team’s primary nickel defender, recorded 118 combined tackles (five for a loss), one sack, one forced fumble and seven passes defensed between 2020 and 2022.

4 restricted free agents the Saints should pursue in their next wave of signings

Restricted free agents don’t count into the compensatory draft picks formula. These are 4 names the Saints should pursue in their next wave of signings:

How much consideration are the New Orleans Saints giving to their projected compensatory draft picks in 2024? The team doesn’t usually pay much mind to how their moves in free agency cost them draft assets later on down the road, but if there’s a year to be careful about it, it’s this one. The Saints currently projected to receive three or four comp picks in the 2024 draft between rounds four, five, and six, which would do a lot to help them restock the roster with affordable depth on rookie contracts.

But signing free agents wipes out the comp picks you’d otherwise receive — most times. There are a couple of loopholes, though. For one thing, any free agents who were cut by their last team do not count (and we’ve highlighted four possible targets here). For another, players who carry restricted free agent status (usually those with just three or fewer years’ experience) also don’t count. So what’s the catch?

These are usually young players who haven’t earned a long-term extension with their last team either due to injury or inconsistent play; the Saints’ own list of unsigned restricted free agents includes wide receiver Marquez Callaway, defensive tackle Malcolm Roach, and linebackers Chase Hansen and Andrew Dowell.

There’s a tradeoff in signing them to guard future comp picks just like in signing veterans who were released by their last team due to their age, injury, or decreased production. But sometimes you can find a diamond in the rough. Here are four names who should be on the Saints’ radar:

Panthers not tendering DB Myles Hartsfield

Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Panthers will not be tendering DB Myles Hartsfield—making him an unrestricted free agent.

On the first day of the legal tampering period, the Carolina Panthers placed a restricted free agent tender on safety and special teams standout Sam Franklin—keeping him around for the 2023 season. But they will not be doing the same with fellow defensive back Myles Hartsfield.

As first reported by Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network, the Panthers do not plan on tendering the three-year veteran. That will, in effect, turn Hartsfield into an unrestricted free agent.

The Ole Miss product joined the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2020. Hartsfield, who actually worked from both the safety and running back spots during the summer, was then named to the 53-man roster at the start of the campaign.

He’s gone on to play in 41 games, with 19 starts, over the past three seasons. A versatile back who served as Carolina’s primary nickel defender, Hartsfield amassed 118 combined tackles (five for a loss), one sack, one forced fumble and seven passes defensed.

Panthers rule out DB Myles Hartsfield out for Week 11 matchup vs. Ravens

The Panthers’ secondary is going to be in rough shape against the Ravens on Sunday.

Sunday is a particularly bad day for the Carolina Panthers to be down any more men in their secondary. And unfortunately, they’re going to be down another man in their secondary.

As first reported by Darin Gantt of Panthers.com, the team has downgraded defensive back Myles Hartsfield from doubtful to out for Week 11’s matchup with the Baltimore Ravens. Carolina will already be without cornerback Donte Jackson, whose season was ended after being placed on injured reserve with a torn Achilles tendon, and safety Juston Burris.

Hartsfield has been a key member of the defense—as he’s played the third-most coverage snaps for the Panthers in 2022. The versatile 5-foot-11, 210-pounder has been utilized as both a safety and a nickel corner.

Carolina may still not have standout safety Jeremy Chinn at their disposal either. Interim head coach Steve Wilks remained non-committal about Chinn’s status for Sunday, which is yet to be determined.

If Chinn is down as well, the Panthers may elevate cornerback T.J. Carrie—who was just signed to the practice squad on Tuesday.
