Advanced stats preview for Saturday’s game between Texas, TCU

The Longhorns should win decisively if they play to their ability on Saturday.

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns (8-1) face the TCU Horned Frogs (4-5) on Saturday night. The matchup favors Texas in a number of areas.

Advanced stats analyst Parker Fleming shared how the game looks on paper. According to his simulated preview, the Longhorns are likely to come out on top. Fleming’s stats have Texas winning by an approximate score of 29-19.

The matchup leans toward the Longhorns for several reasons. Many of those reasons involve Texas’ high defensive efficiency to offset offensive question marks.

The Longhorns’ biggest weakness comes in offensive efficiency where the team ranks No. 104 in Eckel Rate. The stat measures touchdowns or first downs inside the 40 yard line. In other words, Texas isn’t performing well in enemy territory.

Fortunately for the Longhorns, TCU isn’t performing well in offensive Eckel Rate either. The Frogs rank No. 98 in that category. The team also lags behind on early down defense where the Texas offense has thrived on early downs.

Fleming’s model gives the Longhorns a 77.4% chance to win on Saturday. They will look to capitalize on the favorable matchup at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

Beat TCU: Horned Frogs aim for a Texas upset to sweeten a sour season

This game could mean everything to Horned Frogs fans.

Texas faces a common challenge in each of the final three games against TCU, Iowa State and Texas Tech: The games inherently mean more to its opponent.

Make no mistake, Texas has everything to play for in 2023. The team is 8-1 with a Big 12 title at stake. A place in the College Football Playoff also hangs in the balance. That said, against TCU the Longhorns face an opponent with little to lose and much to gain from the game.

The TCU Horned Frogs are 4-5 on the year following an embarrassing loss to Texas Tech last Thursday. You can expect more inspired football from TCU this week.

The last few matchups against the Horned Frogs haven’t gone much in Texas favor. The Longhorns lost last season in a low scoring battle. The year before, Texas limped past a bad TCU team on the road, 32-27.

Under former head coach Tom Herman’s leadership, the Longhorns went 1-3 against TCU. The records never mattered. Texas always got TCU’s best game.

Texas should demolish TCU this week. It should be a lot more like the first half of the Kansas State game than the second half. The potential return of starting quarterback Quinn Ewers would make that result more likely. Nevertheless, what should happen often doesn’t happen when the Longhorns travel to Fort Worth.

Winning for Texas will require a high level of mental toughness and attention to detail over the next three games. The Longhorns will look to prove their mettle against the Horned Frogs on Saturday. You can watch the game at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

Big 12 Basketball: No. 9 Texas at No. 23 TCU preview and predictions

Texas travels up I-35 to take on TCU.

No. 9 Texas travels to No. 23 TCU on Wednesday for a Big 12 matchup with massive implications. The Longhorns can clinch a share of the regular season conference title with a 2-0 finish to the year.

Texas is eyeing a sweep of TCU after an 18-point comeback victory against the Frogs on Jan. 11. Texas has dominated the series in recent years, winning eight of the last nine matchups between the two.

Getting off to a good start is going to be key for Texas this time around. The Longhorns do not want an early deficit to let a rowdy TCU crowd impact the game.

Texas’ frontcourt saw success in the first round against the Frogs. Timmy Allen and Dylan Disu each scored over 15 points in the win and will look to replicate that success again.

TCU is getting healthy at the right time as we approach the NCAA Tournament. All-conference guard Mike Miles is back in the lineup after dealing with an injury midseason, he picked up a double-double in TCU’s win over Texas Tech on the weekend.

Texas basketball checks in at No. 9 in new AP Top 25 Poll

Texas basketball falls one spot to No. 9 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll following a 1-1 week in the Big 12.

Texas basketball falls one spot to No. 9 in the latest AP Top 25 Poll following a 1-1 week in the Big 12.

Five Big 12 teams were included in this week’s rankings. Kansas (No. 3), Baylor (No. 7), Texas (No. 9), Kansas State (No. 11) and TCU (No. 22) all made the cut as Iowa State dropped out.

The Longhorns gave two drastically different showings in games against Iowa State and Baylor. Texas played dominant basketball vs. Iowa State in a blowout victory before a flat-footed effort on the road at Baylor.

Texas is in a great position to set itself nicely for the Big 12 and NCAA Tournaments with a record of 22-7 and 11-5 in league play.

Matchups against No. 22 TCU and No. 3 TCU to close out the regular season provide Texas a chance to put a bow on its final resume. Winning both games would secure Texas a share of the Big 12 title for the first time since 2008.
