Texas offers 2022 Cornerback

Hosting recruiting this weekend, UT has had players on the 40 Acres. The latest prospect to receive an offer is 2022 CB Jaylon Guilbeau.

Hosting recruiting this weekend, Texas has had players from the 2020, 2021 and 2022 class on the 40 Acres. Giving out a few offers, the Longhorns have now begun to look past the 2020 class and focus on the upcoming years.

The latest prospect to receive an offer from Head Coach Tom Herman is 2022 cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. Out of Port Arthur, Texas, Guilbeau attends Memorial High School and is currently unranked by 247Sports.

Despite not being ranked, he still has offers from some of the best programs in the country, with Texas being his seventh offer. Oklahoma State is the only other Big 12 school to offer Guilbeau, but Arkansas, LSU, and Texas A&M from the SEC have also offered him.

Guilbeau is the fourth cornerback the Longhorns have offered in the 2022 class. Four players are from inside the state of Texas and five-star Domani Jackson out of Mater Dei High School in California is the only out of state cornerback offered.

UT is in another tight game in the Big 12. Early in the game, Jericho Sims threw down a monster dunk, sparking momentum for the entire half.

Currently down at halftime by one point to Iowa State, the Longhorns are in another tight game in the Big 12. Early in the game, Jericho Sims threw down a monster dunk, sparking momentum for the entire first half.

Setting a screen for Matt Coleman, Sims trailed the play and was wide open in the middle of the lane. Starting his jump from the top of the restricted area, Sims extended his arms as far as he can to throw it down.

Two Texas football prospects to watch for on National Signing Day

Texas will be paying close attention to two highly-rated defensive ends on National Signing Day.

Texas could potentially bolster their defensive line on National Signing Day.

New defensive coordinator Chris Ash has been successful in getting two highly-rated defensive ends on campus in Austin recently. Five-star defensive end Alfred Collins and four-star defensive end Princely Umanmielen will be announcing their program of choice on February 5.

The Longhorns currently have the No. 11 recruiting class in the nation for 2020, which would seemingly rise if Texas were to land both of these prospects.

Collins recently earned a five-star rating by 247Sports. The 6-5, 284-pound lineman is undoubtedly Texas’ top remaining target. Currently the No. 32 overall prospect in the nation, the Bastrop Cedar Creek native would be the third-highest graded recruit for the Longhorns in the 2020 class, trailing only running back Bijan Robinson and quarterback Hudson Card.

The three remaining programs in the race to land Collins are Texas, Oklahoma, and Alabama.

Umanmielen originally committed to Texas in August, but reopened his recruitment in October. The 6-4, 249-pound prospect is currently ranked as the No. 241 player nationally and the No. 38 overall prospect in Texas. Umanmielen has completed two visits in Austin over the past two weeks.

Auburn, Florida, Baylor, and Texas are the four finalists that remain in the hunt to land Umanmielen.

Four-star wide receiver Kelvontay Dixon and three-star cornerback Ennis Rakestraw are also considering Texas. Despite replacing both coordinators, the Longhorns have a quality list of solid players in this recruiting class.

Texas is reportedly interested in Michigan’s Tarik Black

According to Brian Dohn of 247, the Texas Longhorns have interest in Michigan grad transfer Tarik Black to help at wide receiver.

For the Texas Longhorns offense in 2020, they are losing plenty of experience at wide receiver with their top two receivers leaving for the NFL. The top names to remain on the roster are Jake Smith and Brennan Eagles who provided six touchdowns a piece and a combined for 796 yards in 2019. There is also Malcolm Epps who could split time at receiver and tight end for the Longhorns in 2020.

So should the Longhorns address their wide receiver issues through the transfer portal? According to Brian Dohn of 247, the Longhorns are interested in Michigan grad transfer Tarik Black. His numbers weren’t exactly eye popping in 2019. He played in 11 games for the first time in his college career with 25 receptions for 323 yards and one score.

The former four-star wide receiver never seemed to put it all together in Ann Arbor but a change of scenery and a new voice in his ear could just be what the doctor ordered. The Longhorns obviously like receivers with size that they can use in matchups against smaller defenders and Black fits that to a “T”, The 6’3″ wide receiver could fit right in and bring experience to a relatively young wide receiver group.

There are obviously concerns with his inability to put everything together at the Big House but Texas should kick the tires on a potential prospect who can lock down the spot as an outside wide receiver.

2020 Texas Longhorns Spring Battles: The Running Backs

As spring football approaches for the Texas Longhorns, Longhorns Wire takes a look at the running back battle for 2020.

Over the history of the Texas Longhorns football program, they have put some of the very best running backs from Earl Campbell to Eric Metcalf to Ricky Williams to Cedric Benson to Jamaal Charles on the field at Darrel K. Royal-Memorial Stadium. There are many more that could be listed but you get the point, playing running back at University of Texas has launched many careers to the NFL.

The 2020 team is no exception. The Longhorns signed the number one running back in the nation with Bijan Robinson. Robinson won’t be in spring camp since he won’t officially enroll at Texas until the fall. He has had quite the winter with his appearance in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio and the Polynesian Bowl in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Balance, speed, vision, hands. Robinson has it all and that is why the Arizona product was ranked as the number one running back in the nation. While Bijan won’t be part of the spring football workouts and spring game, he is still one the backs to watch when he steps foot on the Forty Acres this fall.

Keaontay Ingram

Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

The incumbent starter, Keaontay Ingram finished his second season for the Longhorns. Ingram rushed the ball just two times more in 2019 than he did in 2018 for a total of 145 yards more. His total yards from scrimmage increased from 878 yards to 1,095 as he became more of an option in the passing game.

The former four-star back from Carthage, Texas has the leg up on the starting role given how he has performed for the Longhorns. The soon to be junior running back did split time with Roschon Johnson this season with a Ingram getting more carries by a narrow margin.

Johnson showed that he is the ultimate teammate in 2019. Following the injury to Jordan Whittington, Roschon made the switch to running back. He was listed on the depth chart as the second running back and third quarterback. The dual-threat is living up to the moniker as he is a threat to play two separate positions. It wouldn’t be surprising if Johnson could also help out at the wide receiver spot as well.

Roschon finished his first season at Texas with 146 touches, 807 yards and eight scores. Most of those numbers coming on the ground when asked to spell Ingram. Roschon should get more looks at running back in 2020 and during the spring based on how well he adapted this past season.

Jordan Whittington brought a lot of hype with him to Austin in 2019, unfortunately that was short-lived with his injury that robbed him of his freshman season. After suffering an injury against Louisiana Tech early on in the season, Whittington was shut down after two receptions for 17 yards. In 2020, a lot will be expected of him. He was listed as one of ESPN’s Top 25 breakout players in 2020.

Whittington was a star running back in high school and he could very well find himself in the mix at both running back and wide receiver come the fall. The Longhorns are going to have to find ways to replace the production of Devin Duvernay and Collin Johnson who left for the NFL after graduating.

For Texas the running back room is suddenly chock full of talent and the best part is that new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich will have plenty of options at his disposal for 2020.

Third Quarter Dooms Texas Longhorns Upset Bid

The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team was looking for their second top five win on the year but the 3rd quarter ended all hope.

The Texas Longhorns women’s basketball took the court Friday night in hopes of securing their second top five upset of the season. Earlier this year, the Longhorns took down the number one ranked Stanford Cardinals in Austin. Early on it looked as if the lady horns would be able to keep it relatively close. By halftime the number one ranked Baylor squad led by just five points before the wheels came off the Longhorns upset bid.

In the third quarter the Bears rattle off a 23-5 run to increase their lead to 52-29 and the scoring droughts were too common for Texas. On the night they shot a meager 24.6 percent from the field. For Texas nothing was working as they even shot just 36.8 percent from the free throw line, it just wasn’t working for the Longhorns. Credit the Baylor Bears for putting a lot of pressure on Texas.

Charli Collier showed her presence in the paint with 16 rebounds and four blocks but she shot just 1-10 from the field, with her only basket being from behind the arc. In the second half she missed all three attempts from the field and both free throw attempts. Sug Sutton led the starters with nine points on 4-13 shooting, senior guard Lashann Higgs led all Longhorns with 10 points off the bench and the only one who shot better than 50 percent from the line.

The Lady Bears continued their dominance of the Big 12 with their eighth-straight conference win dropping the Longhorns to 14-7 and 6-3 in the Big 12. For Texas they will travel to Lubbock on February 9th to take on the Lady Raiders. In their previous matchup, the Longhorns throttled Tech to start their five game win streak that Baylor snapped on Friday night.

2020 NFL Draft: Devin Duvernay Ranks No. 1 In Yards After Catch

Texas Longhorns wide receiver Devin Duvernay leads all draft eligible wide receivers in yards after the catch per Pro Football Focus.

Texas Longhorns’ wide receiver Devin Duvernay shows up on top of most metrics in terms of how a wide receiver is graded by Pro Football Focus. According to PFF, Duvernay leads all draft eligible receivers with 719 yards after the catch. Roughly 51.9 percent of his entire yardage total. Just goes to show you that when he gets the ball in his hands, good things happen.

Yards after the catch is just one of the ways that Duvernay can win at the next level, as the numbers indicate that Devin was one of the best in college football. Using his speed, Duvernay is able to get behind defenses which allows him to rack up the yards. It should be on full display in the NFL.

Four Former Longhorns to Participate in the Super Bowl

With the Super Bowl on Sunday, there are a few former Longhorns participating. One for the KC Chiefs and three for the San Fransico 49ers.

With the Super Bowl coming up on Sunday, there are a few former Longhorns that will be participating in the biggest football game in the world. All but Alex Okafor on the side of the San Fransico, the 49ers will have two coaches and a player who all played on the 40 acres.

Kyle Shanahan is the head coach of San Fransico, while Richard Hightower is a special teams coordinator. Okafor and Marquise Goodwin are players for the Chiefs and 49ers respectively, but will both be injured for Sunday’s game.

Both Shannan and Hightower were receivers for Texas, both playing during the 2001 season. Shannan also played in 2002 and recorded 14 receptions and 127 yards throughout the two seasons.

Goodwin was a more prominent player on the team, playing 2009-2012. Having 120 catches in those four years, he had 1,324 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. He was also an effective rusher, averaging 8.8 yards per carry and getting into the end zone three times.

Okafor is the only defensive player, playing on the defensive line. Like Goodwin, he also played for four years, beginning in 2009. He recorded 23 career sacks, with his best season coming his senior year where he recorded 12.5 sacks.

No matter the result of the game, a former Longhorn will be a Super Bowl champion. With the two coaches on the San Fransico side and a player on each team, both the 49ers and Chiefs will have roots from Austin.

Three-star cornerback confirms visit to Texas

Three-star CB Ennis Rakestraw will be visiting UT this weekend. Rakestraw would be the second CB Texas would sign in the 2020 class.

Hosting a few recruits this weekend, it seems another one will be heading down to Austin this weekend for a visit. Ennis Rakestraw tweeted out that he was on his way to the 40 acres this weekend. A three-star cornerback, Rakestraw would be the second cornerback Texas would sign in this year’s recruiting class.

Listed at 6 feet 170 pounds, Rakestraw is from Duncanville, Texas. Attending Duncanville High School, if he were to sign with the Longhorns, he would join high school teammate Ja’Quinden Jackson in the 2020 class.

Only two other Big 12 teams are in on Rakestraw, as Baylor and Kansas have also given him offers. Local Texas schools have done the same, with SMU, North Texas, and Texas Southern being on his offer list.

The main threat to the Longhorns, however, are the Alabama Crimson Tide. 247Sports Crystal Ball currently has him 100% going to Alabama as he visited Tuscaloosa last weekend. With signing day a couple days away, Rakestraw would be a solid addition to a strong 2020 class.
