WATCH: Keondre Coburn, Byron Murphy block for Bijan Robinson’s touchdown

Nothing like some defensive lineman blocking for Bijan Robinson!

Texas is finally having some second-half success, finding the end zone on their opening drive. A 15 play scoring drive, taking 6:11 off the clock is not something we are used to seeing from Steve Sarkisian’s offense.

Just a play after Bijan Robinson came up short on a swing pass, Sarkisian decided to go for it on fourth and goal. Defensive lineman Keondre Coburn and Byron Murphy came into the game as lead blockers, paving the way for Robinson to get his first touchdown of the day.

As a defender, seeing No. 99 and No. 90 charging at me would not be fun. Two of the biggest dudes in the conference are going to win one on one blocks with a running head start.

You can watch the full play here:

Now, we wait and see if Texas can sustain success in the second half. Getting Robinson involved after a rather uneventful first half was a good start. More of the Heisman caliber running back will lead to a win.

After Baylor responded with a touchdown, Texas leads 21-17 in the third quarter. You can watch the rest of the game on ABC.

Halftime recap of Texas’ 14-10 lead over Baylor

Texas once again has a halftime lead.

Well, we find ourselves in another situation where Texas is leading a Big 12 team at halftime. In a game where both teams have left points on the field, Steve Sarkisian’s team somehow leads Baylor 14-10.

In reality, the offense should have two more touchdowns. Casey Thompson missed a wide-open touchdown to Xavier Worthy and then Joshua Moore dropped a score in anticipation of getting hit. Quite the opposite of what we have seen in previous weeks — the brakes have bit hit a bit in the first half.

Texas’ defense has played well, intercepting Gerry Bohanon twice. Running back Abram Smith has not been as effective, only rushing for 42 yards. The defensive line has been the real difference, specifically Keondre Coburn.

Bijan Robinson’s 15 rushing yards is the real story of the game. The Heisman candidate has been kept in check during his seven carries. If the Longhorns want to avoid another second-half blunder, letting No. 5 loose is going to be key. He is due to break one off eventually.

Key stats

Casey Thompson: 12/16 for 151 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception

Bijan Robinson: Seven carries for 15 yards

Xavier Worthy: Two receptions for 86 yards and a touchdown

Gerry Bohanon: 10/20 for 115 yards and two interceptions

Abram Smith: 10 carries for 42 yards

B.J. Foster/Luke Brockermeyer: One interception each

WATCH: Texas releases Trailer Thursday hype video for Baylor game

Check out Texas’ hype video for the Baylor matchup!

Although Texas has already played past half of their games on the schedule, Saturday feels like the beginning of the second half. Back-to-back losses to the Oklahoma schools have swung the program to a low spot but there is still an opportunity to end on a high note.

To even have a sniff of success this season, winning in Waco against Baylor is the first step. A win is almost a must at this point, looking to steer clear of living at .500. As simple as it may sound, there is a huge difference between a 4-4 record and a 5-3 record.

Baylor is fresh off a bye as well. Wins against West Virginia and BYU preceded, earning them the No. 16 spot in the latest AP poll.

To prepare for the matchup, the Texas football Twitter account put out their weekly Trailer Thursday. Clips of some of the Longhorns’ best players, with some run through a brick wall type music, and a mini pump-up speech all feature.

Check it out here:

Immediately after the Red River Shootout loss, Steve Sarkisian said the goal was to get to Arlington for a rematch. We have not seen it yet, but it’s time to show a conference championship-caliber team on the field.

Losing would put Texas’ Big 12 hopes to a near mathematical close. Being behind Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Baylor in the standings would be impossible to overcome. Winning puts them in a position to be in position.

Expect healthy doses of the two running backs from both head coaches. Bijan Robinson and Abram Smith are both tied for second in the conference with 10 rushing touchdowns. Whoever’s defense can stop the run better, will have the best chance of winning.

You can catch Texas’ matchup against No. 16 Baylor on Saturday at 11 a.m. CST on ABC.

Comparing Texas and Baylor’s statistical leaders

Texas’ statistical leaders line up similar to Baylor’s.

For the first time since Halloween last season, Texas will be facing off against a ranked team on the road. No. 16 Baylor plays host in Waco, hoping to keep pushing their successful second year under Dave Aranda forward.

Both teams are coming off a bye week. In their last matchup, the Bears got a 14 point win over BYU, while Texas collapsed against Oklahoma State. The vibe around each program could not be more different.

When comparing the two from a stat perspective, the numbers a similar. Of the six categories selected (passing, rushing, receiving, tackling, sacks, and return yards), Bijan Robinson’s numbers are the only ones that show a significant difference.

Baylor quarterback Gerry Bohanon has some room on Casey Thompson, but the first two starts of the year went to Hudson Card. The former has played in and started every game for Baylor.

Here is a comparison of Texas and Baylor’s stat leaders. Of note, both teams have played seven games to this point.

Texas slight underdogs on the road against No. 16 Baylor

For just the second time this season, Texas has opened as an underdog.

After taking a week off with a bye, Texas is set to face off against their third consecutive ranked opponent in No. 16 Baylor. Traveling just north to Waco, Saturday’s result is a huge one for Steve Sarkisian.

Win and everything from the previous three weeks somewhat goes away. The best way to fix problems is by winning. As crazy as it may sound, a Big 12 championship game appearance is still possible.

Lose and things could get pretty ugly, pretty quickly. An 8-4 season was not out of the equation coming into the year but was seen as the worst possible scenario. Baylor winning would present that as the best-case scenario.

Unluckily, Tipico Sportsbook sees Baylor as the favorite. Texas has opened as an underdog for just the second time this season at 2.5 points.

Just like their record on the field, Texas is 4-3 against the spread so far this season.

Five Texas players who need to step up against Baylor

These five need to perform against Baylor on Saturday.

After two grueling losses to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, Texas has a full week to reflect and attempt to recharge for the final five games of the regular season. First on the schedule is a tough road game against No. 16 Baylor.

This could be the make-or-break game for Steve Sarkisian. 5-3 with a 3-2 Big 12 record could still push on toward a conference championship. Sitting at .500 overall could lead to even worse fates down the road.

Everybody within the program needs to step up heading into Baylor. Sarkisian, assistant coaches, and especially the players.

Talent is on this Texas roster. Within the next couple of years, more players will have been drafted from Tom Herman’s recruiting classes than the latter stages of Mack Brown or Charlie Strong. Coaching has been iffy at times but with NFL caliber level players sprinkled throughout, results have been poor.

Things need to change. Here are five players who need to step up for Texas during the Baylor game.

Steve Sarkisian confirms Casey Thompson will remain Texas’ starting QB

No quarterback switch for Texas heading into the bye week.

When Hudson Card struggled against Arkansas, Steve Sarkisian decided it was time to make a move at quarterback after just two games. Texas only found the end zone one time in Fayetteville with No. 1 under center with the 8/15 for 61 passing stat line being a big reason.

Five games later and Casey Thompson finds himself coming off a poor performance. Oklahoma State’s defense dominated in the second half, forcing four three and outs, a turnover on downs, and an interception to complete their comeback. Thompson’s second-quarter pick-six hurt as well, swinging the momentum of the entire game.

Sarkisian will not be making a similar move going into the bye week, saying Thompson will remain the starter during his press conference on Monday. According to the head coach, Thompson has “earned that opportunity to work his way out of this.”

“I think Casey has earned a little bit more of that right to work through some of those struggles,” Sarkisian said. “The week before he throws five touchdowns against Oklahoma, he had a six-touchdown game against Texas Tech, so he’s played and shown really good football to us.”

Thompson has been putting up solid numbers during his five starts despite the 3-2 record. 65% of his throws are going for completions, while his 6.3 yards per attempt is top of the Big 12.

But losing can rile parts of the fan base up. Especially back-to-back games when significant leads were blown due to offensive inefficiency. Sarkisian countered by saying quarterbacks can catch the shorter end of the stick when results are not favorable.

“When you win, sometimes you get a little bit more credit than maybe you deserve and when you lose, maybe you get a little bit more of the blame than maybe you deserve.”

Something that could force Sarkisian’s hand could be an injury to Thompson’s thumb. Being on his throwing hand, the quarterback looked to be in serious discomfort at times. The training staff was tending to it all afternoon.

Making sure Card is ready for the moment if called upon is something Sarkisian says is still happening. Of course, there is nothing the head coach is known for more than developing quarterbacks.

“Now, we’re still developing Hudson and if that time comes, where we need to make a change, we’ll be prepared to do so.”

However, before finishing up his full thought, he made sure it was known Thompson is still the guy and thinks he will rebound.

“We have all the confidence in the world in Casey to do that,” Sarkisian said.

Texas has a bye week before heading to Waco to face off against a what should be ranked Baylor team. Barring injury, there will be no switch at quarterback within the next two weeks.

Sarkisian made the decision to switch to Thompson after Arkansas and will stick to his guns.

Texas Longhorns Basketball: BetMGM odds, how to watch the Baylor game

Texas will return to action on Tuesday night against No. 2 Baylor. The two will be playing each other for the first time this season.

Texas will return to action on Tuesday night against Baylor, the undefeated No. 2 team in the country. The two will be playing against each other for the first time this season after the matchup in January was postponed due to COVID-19 problems.

The Bears are one of the deepest teams in the country with four players who average double figures. Jared Butler and MaCio Teague are the real stars, averaging a combined 31.7 points per game. Baylor ranks as the top Big 12 team in scoring, field goal percentage, three-point percentage, assists, steals, opponent’s field goal percentage, and opponents scoring. They can do nearly everything.

Shaka Smart confirmed the Longhorns should have everyone back who was out from COVID-19, including himself. Knocking off the Bears at home would not only get them back on the right track but bolster Texas’ NCAA Tournament seeding come March.

Texas Longhorns Basketball: Baylor game postponed due to COVID-19

Baylor’s basketball program has shut down due to COVID-19. The Big 12 season opener between the Bears and Texas has been postponed.

Baylor’s basketball program has shut down all team activities due to COVID-19 complications head coach Scott Drew announced on Saturday.  Because of this, the Big 12 season opener between the Bears and Texas has been postponed.

Tarleton State was supposed to travel to Waco on Tuesday but that game has been canceled as well. Baylor has not announced if they will be able to play against Kansas State on Dec. 19.

Here the statement Drew made via BaylorBears.com:

“This is a disappointing time for everyone involved with our program, but we will always prioritize the health and safety of our student-athletes,” Drew said. “The Big 12 Conference prepared for this possibility by leaving the final week of the regular season open, and we look forward to hosting Texas at a later date. Our program will return to competition as soon as we can do so safely.”

Neither school nor the Big 12 conference has announced a makeup date.

Texas’ next scheduled game is Wednesday, Dec. 16 against Sam Houston State. When they take the court, it will have been a full week since the Longhorns played a game.

Big 12 play will begin on Sunday, Dec. 20 at home against Oklahoma State.

Three takeaways from Texas’ win against Baylor

After two consecutive defeats to TCU and Oklahoma, Texas finally got back to winning against Baylor. Here are three takeaways from the win.

After two consecutive defeats to TCU at home and Oklahoma in the Red River Shootout, Texas finally got back to their winning ways against Baylor.

Head coach Tom Herman said he was “extremely proud of the response to those challenges by not only myself and our coaches, but the leaders on the team stepping up and challenging their teammates.” With a bye mixed in, it had been a difficult three weeks for the Longhorns program.

It may not have been the most inspiring win but on paper, the Longhorns are now 2-2 in Big 12 play and still have a shot to make an appearance in the Big 12 Championship. The win over the Bears did not fix every on the field issue but was the correct step.

Here is three takeaway’s from Texas’ Saturday afternoon victory over Baylor:
