Texas QB Maalik Murphy officially emerges as backup to Quinn Ewers

Maalik Murphy earns the backup role over Arch Manning this season.

In Texas’ battle with Rice in Week 1, there wasn’t really a question about whether or not they’d win but more so about certain position battles.

One of the competitions that has been ongoing and is one of the most talked about battles in the country, is one that typically doesn’t even play. The backup quarterback role for Texas was one that many people were chomping at the bit to know who would be the next guy in after Quinn Ewers.

After the Longhorns put on a beatdown of the Rice Owls, we finally got our answer as to who will be the next man up at quarterback. Shortly after Ewers led Texas to third scoring drive of the third quarter, Steve Sarkisian decided to pull his starter and put in the backup. The incumbent? Redshirt freshman Maalik Murphy, who evidently beat out Arch Manning.

In his brief showing, Murphy showcased his huge arm and accuracy enough to get the crowd to erupt.

Texas Football: Quinn Ewers ends quarterback debate with strong spring showing

“I think it’s pretty clear to say that Quinn’s our starting quarterback and we feel very good about that.”

Quinn Ewers looked like an improved quarterback in Texas’s Orange-White spring game on Saturday. Head coach Steve Sarkisian put any question marks surrounding the starting quarterback battle to rest.

“I thought Quinn was really efficient today, I think it’s pretty clear to say that Quinn’s our starting quarterback and we feel very good about that.”

Ewers completed 16 of 23 passes for 195 yards, one touchdown and no turnovers. He hit Xavier Worthy on a 46-yard deep strike to set up a touchdown early on. Ewers later connected with Georgia transfer AD Micthell for a score.

The second-year quarterback was unhappy with the inconsistency of his freshman campaign. Ewers is taking the extra steps to make strides as both a leader and player.

Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning will continue to push Ewers leading up to the season, but Sark feels confident this is Ewers’ team to lead.

LOOK: Archie Manning visits grandson Arch at Texas

Arch was recently paid a visit by his grandfather Archie Manning.

Arch comes from one of the more high-profile families in football. He was recently paid a visit by his grandfather Archie Manning.

Archie played college ball at Ole Miss before having an accomplished career as the quarterback of the New Orleans Saints. He is the father of NFL hall of fame signal-callers Peyton and Eli Manning, as well as Arch’s dad Cooper, who was forced to medically retire from football prematurely.

Football comes naturally to the Manning family. Arch is hoping to carve out his own path to success as a Texas Longhorn.

Arch shared a photo of him and his grandfather in Texas’ practice bubble on his Instagram.
