Texas’ run defense stepped up

Coming out of the bye week, Tom Herman discussed how Texas’ run defense needed to improve to win conference games. Oklahoma ran rampant in the Red River Shootout, rushing for 208 yards. Against Baylor, the push from the front seven improved and held the Bears to 64 yards.

Quarterback Charlie Brewer was Baylor’s leading rusher, having 16 yards on 10 carries. Senior running back John Lovett was only given four carries and gained 21 yards. It helped that Texas was ahead for most of the game, forcing the Bears to throw the ball but when the Bears ran the ball, they had minimal success.

Juwan Mitchell, Moro Ojomo, and Ta’Quon Graham all ended with at least 1.0 tackle for loss in the win. Getting into the backfield and finishing plays has been a struggle all season and Saturday’s performance showed promise. Now, showing that progress on a week in and week out basis will be the next goal for Herman.
