Michigan basketball loses prized 2024 commit

Expected, but still not great. #GoBlue

Michigan basketball is about to experience some unprecedented turnover after firing head coach Juwan Howard following a program-worst 8-24 season.

The Wolverines have already lost two players on the current roster in point guard Dug McDaniel and freshman guard George Washington III to the transfer portal. Though he had intended to wait and see where the maize and blue turn in terms of a new head coach, the only commit who hadn’t signed is apparently reopening his recruitment.

Rated No. 31 according to the 247Sports Composite, 2024 Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy forward Khani Rooths — who has been pledged to Michigan basketball since November 2023 — has decided to decommit from the program, though he intends to still consider the maize and blue, depending on  where the program goes in terms of head coach.

Rooths was one of three commits in the 2024 class with longtime pledge Christian Anderson and in-state star Durral Brooks both having signed, whereas Rooths had remained unsigned.

The roster dwindling, whoever Warde Manuel hires as the new head coach will have his work cut out for him when it comes to replenishing the player personnel on the team.

Michigan basketball starting PG Dug McDaniel to enter transfer portal

This one stings. #GoBlue

The University of Michigan parted ways with head coach and favored son Juwan Howard and now we’re starting to see some of the immediate repercussions.

The Wolverines lost freshman guard George Washington III to the transfer portal on Sunday but a bigger domino fell on Monday afternoon.

The team leader in points and assists, point guard Dug McDaniel was (mostly) a bright spot on a bad team that set the program record in losses, having gone 8-24 in 2023-24. Before even waiting to see who his new head coach may be, McDaniel decided it’s time for a change of scenery, as it was revealed he’s entering the transfer portal.

McDaniel, as noted, led the team in scoring with 16.3 points per game, and in assists with 4.7 points per game. He did, however, find himself in some hot water this year as he got into some academic trouble, which led to him being suspended for road games for the bulk of the latter half of the season. While he climbed out of it and ended up starting on the road in the final two games away from Crisler Center, certainly that could have played a role in his departure.

McDaniel has two years of eligibility remaining after being thrown to the wolves in his freshman year. With incumbent starter Frankie Collins transferring to Arizona State following his own freshman campaign, the presumed starter at point guard was Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn, who ended up having an early-season-ending injury which thrust McDaniel into the starting role. He thrived in spots, but also struggled mightily with turning the ball over.

As of yet, Michigan has no head coaches lined up for interviews and will likely see more attrition before things get settled.

Warde Manuel announces firing of Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard

And now the basketball team needs a new coach, too.

Michigan basketball fans thought this day wouldn’t come, given all of the rumors and speculation out there that athletic director Warde Manuel was leaning towards retaining head coach Juwan Howard.

But Howard — who missed the early season after recuperating from offseason heart surgery — didn’t seem to have a handle on his team. The Wolverines finished the 2023-24 season with a program worst 8-24 record, and the team finished out the season looking terribly uncompetitive — even against bad teams in the Big Ten.

However, the University of Michigan announced that Juwan Howard will not be retained and that he has been relieved of his duties.

Full release

Warde Manuel, the University of Michigan’s Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics, announced Friday (March 15) that a leadership change would be made in men’s basketball with the David and Meredith Kaplan head coach Juwan Howard not returning next season.

“After a comprehensive review of the program, I have decided that Juwan will not return as our men’s basketball coach,” said Manuel. “Juwan is among the greatest Wolverines to ever be associated with our basketball program. I know how much it meant, to not only Juwan, but to all of us for him to return here to lead this program. Despite his love of his alma mater and the positive experience that our student-athletes had under his leadership, it was clear to me that the program was not living up to our expectations and not trending in the right direction. I am thankful for Juwan’s dedication, passion and commitment to U-M and for all that he, and his legacy, will continue to mean to Michigan.”

During his five seasons in Ann Arbor, Howard has compiled an 82-67 record, with two NCAA Tournament (2021 & 2022) selections as well as a postseason NIT appearance (2023). Capturing the 2021 Big Ten regular-season title (14-3) under Howard, the Wolverines had four straight 10-plus Big Ten win seasons as he tallied a 48-47 mark in conference play. In 2021, he was named the Associated Press National Coach of the Year as well as the Big Ten’s Coach of the Year. He also coached six Wolverines who went on to be selected in the NBA Draft, including three top-15 picks.

Howard returned to his alma mater for his first head coaching position after spending six years on the staff with the NBA’s Miami Heat. After spending one season in player development following his retirement, Howard was elevated to an assistant coach in 2014-15, working under Erik Spoelstra for the next five seasons. Prior to getting into coaching, Howard had an accomplished 19-year NBA career, which was capped off with back-to-back NBA titles (2012 & 2013) while playing with the Miami Heat.

As a member of the famed “Fab Five,” Howard spent three seasons (1991-94) in Ann Arbor playing for head coach Steve Fisher. A two-time All-American (1993, ’94), Howard closed his U-M career with 1,526 points (15.3 ppg) and 745 rebounds (7.5 rpg).

A national search will begin immediately.

Wolverines signee wins Michigan Mr. Basketball

Very good news for #Michigan. #GoBlue

It has not been a good news year for Michigan basketball, with the current team managing to field the worst in program history over the course of the 2023-24 season. But perhaps the future is much brighter.

The Wolverines have struggled in many regards, but they will be getting some help next year. The maize and blue have two signees in 2024 — longtime commitment Christian Anderson and Grand Rapids (Mich.) Christian Central point guard Durral Brooks. Brooks is a three-star who’s flown somewhat under the radar, but he earned some in-state accolades on Monday as ‘Phat Phat’ was named Mr. Basketball in the state of Michigan.

Brooks, a 6-foot-2 guard, has signed to play basketball at the University of Michigan. He is averaging 27.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 5 assists per game for the Cougars (20-5). His team is still alive in the playoffs. Catholic Central plays Grand Rapids Christian on Tuesday in a Division 2 state quarterfinal game.

He will be the 12th Mr. Basketball winner to attend the University of Michigan and the first since Isaiah Livers in 2017.

Brooks got 512 of the 1,150 first-place votes. Tyler Ode of Saginaw Heritage finished second in the voting, Onsted’s Ayden Davis was third and Zeeland West’s Merritt Alderink was fourth.

If Brooks can follow in Livers’ path, that would bode well for the maize and blue. He is listed as a point guard, as is fellow signee Christian Anderson. Coupled with shooting guard George Washington III, who will be entering his second year, there’s a chance that a the Wolverines can find some momentum in the backcourt.

Michigan basketball Big Ten Tournament seeding, opponent revealed

One last hurrah? #GoBlue

Michigan basketball ended the 2023-24 season not just on a whimper, but with a full-on cry for help, having lost the last eight games of the season and only winning two games (Ohio State and Wisconsin) in the 2024 calendar year.

There’s only once chance for the Wolverines to make the NCAA Tournament, and that would mean winning the entire Big Ten Tournament. That will be beyond an uphill battle considering the maize and blue have the No. 14 seed — dead last in the conference.

The Wolverines will open Big Ten Tournament play at Target Center in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening, taking on 11-seed Penn State 25 minutes after the conclusion of No. 12 Maryland vs. No. 13 Rutgers, which tips off at 6:30 p.m. EDT. Both games will be broadcast on Peacock.

If Michigan loses that game, the season is over. There will be no postseason chance for the Wolverines without winning the Big Ten Tournament. Win that game and Michigan would face No. 6 Indiana on Thursday night. The winner of that game would face No. 3 Nebraska, which Michigan was just blown out by at home on Sunday afternoon.

Nonetheless, the worst season in Michigan basketball history is likely about to come to a quick close within the week.

Longtime Michigan basketball strength coach resigns, paints chilling picture of Juwan Howard

This is really not a good look.

Though considered the heart and soul of the Michigan basketball program, strength and conditioning coach Jon Sanderson is no longer with the program.

Hired by John Beilein in his third year, 2009, the former Ohio State player transformed Wolverines through what had been affectionately called ‘Camp Sanderson.’ But after a Dec. 7 altercation between him and head coach Juwan Howard — who retained Sanderson when he was hired in 2019 — Sanderson went on a leave of absence and then continued working with the Olympic sports on campus. But as of Friday, he’s no longer with the program according to The Athletic. (subscription required)

Jon Sanderson, the longtime Michigan basketball strength and conditioning coach and key figure on the staff of two Final Four teams, has officially parted ways with the university after 15 years with the program.

The university confirmed Sanderson’s departure in a statement to The Athletic, saying: “Jon Sanderson has resigned his position with the University of Michigan Athletic Department, effective March 1. We appreciate Jon’s contributions over the years and wish him the best going forward.”

Sanderson’s exit comes after reaching a settlement with the university, two sources briefed on the agreement said. That agreement includes a non-disclosure clause, those sources said.

The altercation stemmed from Sanderson criticizing team captain Jace Howard, Juwan’s son, who had been out for the season with a stress fracture. The Athletic obtained an e-mail that Sanderson sent to Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel.

While it’s Sanderson’s official record of events and the other side is not accounted for, it is a chilling tale of the Michigan basketball head coach’s actions.

Sanderson wrote that Jace Howard “was berating” the trainer and caused a “scene” that prompted several players to stop and watch. Sanderson described the scene as “totally out of control,” and said the trainer was trying to calm Jace Howard down and get him to discuss the matter privately. Noticing the trainer looking increasingly desperate and “panicked,” Sanderson intervened, yelling at Howard from roughly 30 feet away “you’re a student athlete and he is a professional. You don’t talk to a professional like that. That is disrespectful and entitled.” He said he repeated that the tirade was “disrespectful.”

Sanderson wrote in the email to Manuel that he tried to de-escalate the situation, turning his back and walking away. When Sanderson looked back, he said Juwan Howard came at him, “angry and ready to fight,” repeatedly yelling as players and staff held him back.

“He kept aggressively pursuing me to fight, as the players and staff were doing their best to restrain him. He was out of control, it was an ugly scene. I had no choice but to stand my ground, I didn’t back down. A few of the players and staff got in front of me as well in an effort to keep us separated,” Sanderson wrote.

Howard was ‘cleared’ of wrongdoing by the athletic department a week after the reported incident. The Wolverines head coach is also reportedly on a ‘zero-tolerance’ policy following an on-court altercation with the Wisconsin bench in 2022 where he open-palm hit Badgers assistant Joe Krabbenhoft. It wasn’t the first incident that Howard had in controlling his temper, as a late-game verbal altercation took place with former Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon the previous year.

How to watch, listen or stream Michigan basketball vs. Purdue

Don’t miss the game! #GoBlue

Michigan basketball will have a tougher than usual challenge on Sunday afternoon with No. 3 Purdue coming to Ann Arbor.

The Wolverines are 8-19 on the season and 3-13 in Big Ten play while the Boilermakers are 24-3 and 13-3 by the same metrics. Needless to say, it’s a pretty lopsided matchup. The last time these two teams faced each other, Michigan lost, 99-67, in West Lafayette.

Still, Purdue is a 12.5-point favorite and though the maize and blue are shorthanded with Olivier Nkamhoua out for the season, you never know what can happen when the ball tips off.

DJ Khaled shows off new custom gear gifted to Michigan basketball team

Wish these were available to the public! 🔥#GoBlue

Michigan basketball may not be doing well when it comes to its play on the court, but at least the team will be in fashion.

It’s been some time since prolific pop music producer DJ Khaled came to Ann Arbor to help the Wolverines unveil the basketball team’s brand new Jordan brand jerseys in 2016. That evening at Crisler Center, he DJed a set while donning maize and blue, but now he’s the one giving back to those with the program.

Now that former Miami Heat player and assistant Juwan Howard is the head coach of the program, he’s someone who has a relationship with the Miami-based DJ, and that perhaps prompted the producer to gift some new jackets to the team.

https://www.instagram.com/reel/C3vk_d4PAfO/?igsh=YTFzYTd4cm1mM3Jl

’We The Best’ is DJ Khaled’s company and seeming battle cry he often shouts throughout songs he produces. He appears to have taken a liking to the program given that he’s custom made these jackets emblazoned with not only the traditional Block M, but using an inverted M for the logo on the back of the jacket.

Checking in with former Michigan basketball players in the NBA

#ProBlue in the NBA has been fantastic.

The NBA is now returning from the all-star break which means that it is time for teams to make a postseason run on the hardwood. Of course, any Michigan basketball fans have likely turned their eyes to the draft at this point as both the Wolverines and Pistons sit at just 8 wins and dead last in the standings… but oh well.

The Wolverines do have some exciting NBA prospects, however. There are 12 total Wolverines on NBA rosters this season with most of them playing meaningful minutes for their respective teams. Also, take note that the Orlando Magic currently have four former Wolverines on their 18-man roster. They are in the thick of the playoff race and could be leaning on the Wagner brothers for a push late.
