Jaguars release S Tashaun Gipson Sr. from commissioner’s exempt list

The Jaguars released Tashaun Gipson Sr. from the NFL commissioner’s exempt list on Monday, opting against giving the formerly suspended safety a spot on their active roster.

Gipson, who reunited with Jacksonville in August, was suspended for the first six games of the campaign for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug protocols in July.

However, the NFL did not lift Gipson from its suspended list in Week 7 as originally anticipated, despite the league allowing Gipson to travel with the Jaguars to London in Week 6 for their two-week international series, per Jacksonville head coach Doug Pederson.

“Unfortunately I kicked it back in the hotel room and I watched it there, and I had to shuttle to the airport,” Gipson described his experience n London, when the Jaguars faced the Chicago Bears in Week 6 and New England Patriots in Week 7, on Thursday.

“But I don’t miss a game. I’m dialed in every Sunday. And unfortunately, I can’t be on the sideline. That would have been a lot more nice to be able to rub elbows with these guys and tell them what I see. But you know, just being supportive in the best way I can.”

Gipson was moved to the NFL commissioner’s exempt list last Thursday, allowing him to practice with the team for the first time since the preseason. Jacksonville had until 4 p.m. ET Monday to move Gipson off the list, either onto its active roster or to release him.

A 13th-year pro, Gipson has recorded 684 total tackles with 18 for loss, 2.5 sacks, 33 interceptions, 68 defended passes and one forced fumble since signing with Cleveland as an undrafted free agent out of Wyoming in 2012 and making the Browns’ 53-man roster.

Gipson logged 159 tackles including five for loss, six interceptions and 16 pass breakups during his first stint with the Jaguars, from 2016-18. He has since played for the Houston Texans, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.

Suspended Jaguars safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. was moved to the NFL commissioner’s exempt list Thursday, opening his path toward a return to play after missing at least the first eight games of the 2024 season.

Gipson is allowed to practice with the Jaguars beginning Thursday, but not play until he is moved to Jacksonville’s active roster. His time on the commissioner’s exempt list expires Monday at 4 p.m. ET.

Gipson received a six-game suspension from the NFL in July for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. He signed with Jacksonville in August, reuniting with the Jaguars after playing for the club from 2016-18.

The 13th-year NFL safety traveled with the Jaguars to London for the final week of his suspension but was not cleared to return by the NFL as expected for Week 7 against the New England Patriots. He remained ineligible for Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers.

“It’s a league decision right now,” Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson explained Oct. 21. “It’s in their hands as far as the being released from the suspension. So, honestly, until we hear further, that’s where it’s at right now.”

Gipson has recorded 684 total tackles including 18 for loss, 2.5 sacks, 33 interceptions, 68 defended passes, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over 173 career appearances, including 165 starts, with Cleveland, Jacksonville, Houston, Chicago and San Francisco.

He previously tallied 159 tackles including five for loss, six interceptions, 16 defended passes and one fumble recovery in 48 games with the Jaguars.

Jaguars safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. was scheduled for activation from a six-game suspension, handed down by the NFL in July for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy, on Monday.

Monday came and went, though, and Gipson remains on the league’s suspended list.

Gipson traveled with the Jaguars to London for Weeks 6-7 — with permission from the NFL, head coach Doug Pederson shared last week — as Jacksonville anticipated he would be available for the team’s second game abroad, against the New England Patriots this Sunday.

On Wednesday, Pederson placed the ball in the league’s court to clear Gipson.

“It’s a league thing, honestly. He’s still on the commissioner’s suspended list, so we’re waiting on the league,” Pederson said.

Jacksonville signed Gipson in August, after his suspension was filed.

The 13th-year NFL safety, who previously played for the Jaguars from 2016-18, has logged 684 total tackles including 18 for loss, 2.5 sacks, 33 interceptions, 68 defended passes, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery over 173 career appearances, including 165 starts.

Pederson did not rule out the NFL making Gipson available for the Jaguars before they face the Patriots at Wembley Stadium in Week 7. However, he did not express confidence that the situation would be resolved by kickoff, either.

“Maybe. I really don’t know where that is right now,” Pederson admitted. “I just know that’s the last correspondence I was given.”

Suspended Jacksonville safety Tashaun Gipson Sr. will travel with the team to London for Weeks 6-7, Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson revealed Wednesday.

Gipson, who reunited with the Jaguars during their August training camp, signed with Jacksonville after the NFL handed him a six-game suspension in July for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

Tashaun Gipson on Jaguars reunion: ‘Things are turning around here’

Pederson noted the Jaguars received permission from the NFL to allow Gipson to travel a week before his suspension is scheduled to be lifted.

“Yes, even though this week is his sixth week,” Pederson said.

Gipson, a 13th-year pro who previously played for the Jaguars from 2016-18, has logged 684 total tackles including 18 for loss, 2.5 sacks, 33 interceptions, 68 defended passes, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in 173 career appearances, including 165 starts.

Thirty-three of Gipson’s starts came with San Franciso over the last two seasons, in which he recorded six interceptions and 11 defended passes.

Gipson tallied 159 tackles with five for loss, six interceptions and 16 defended passes in his previous stint with Jacksonville, a 48-game span.

Gipson’s coverage presence could benefit the Jaguars, who rank last in the NFL for allowing 287.8 passing yards per game and tied for last in interceptions generated with zero.

“That’s something we’ve got to take a look at,” Pederson suggested regarding the potential for Gipson and other defenders currently on the injured reserve to help the Jaguars upon their return to play.

“We’re [in] Week 6 now. You’re looking at [cornerback] Tyson [Campbell] potentially Week 7, you’re looking at [linebacker] Foye [Oluokun], you’re looking at [safety Andrew Wingard], you’re looking at some of these guys that are injured — Tashaun Gipson.

“You look at these guys now, and you know, we’ve got to start the conversation obviously and see where we’re at. Because you never know. I mean, week-to-week, injuries are gonna happen and different things are going to change periodically. But yeah, we’re in the process of trying to figure some of that out now.”

The Jaguars facilitated a situation similar to Gipson’s in 2023, allowing starting left tackle Cam Robinson to travel with the team on its annual London trip amid a four-game suspension. He sat out Jacksonville’s Week 4 game against Atlanta at Wembley Stadium and played Week 5 versus Buffalo at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

6 former Browns participating in Super Bowl LVIII with Chiefs and 49ers

Which former Browns players and coaches will be participating today?

The Cleveland Browns fell short of Super Bowl LVIII this season, but they have some former players and coaches like Kyle Shanahan and Tashaun Gipson Sr. who will be participating in the festivities as the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers take the field.

Shanahan was the offensive coordinator for the Browns in 2014, when quarterback Brian Hoyer and company jumped out to 7-3 record that year before plummeting back down to earth. Gipson Sr. was on that team as well, suiting up for the Browns at free safety from 2012 through 2015. He picked off a total of 14 passes, including 11 from 2013-2014 (making the Pro Bowl in 2014) while wearing the brown and orange.

Who else participating in today’s game has ties to the Browns?

There is not a single player or coach on the Chiefs that has any ties to the Browns. Here are six coaches and players who have spent time in Cleveland at some point throughout their careers in the NFL.

The NFL’s 11 best safeties

From Minkah Fitzpatrick to Quandre Diggs to Vonn Bell, here are Doug Farrar’s 11 best safeties in the NFL today.

Safety might be the NFL’s most volatile position.

When you look at what makes the best safeties in the league from year to year, not only do the requirements change in certain ways, but the players at the top tend to vary quite a bit. This was reinforced to me when I put together last year’s list of the NFL’s best safeties, and there were just five safeties who made the list in both 2021 and 2022.

There’s similar turnover as we move to 2023. Minkah Fitzpatrick, Tyrann Mathieu, Quandre Diggs, Kevin Byard, Justin Simmons, and Jordan Poyer made the cut last year and this year. That’s six of the 13 top safeties from last season, so here’s to the new blood.

Derwin James, Micah Hyde, Marcus Williams, Xavier McKinney, Antione Winfield Jr., Jimmie Ward, Devin McCourty (retired) didn’t make the list from last year. Not that any of them had horrible seasons or anything; there’s just a run of guys who were better last season who I think deserved more merit.

My criteria for the positions this year were…

  • Ability at post safety is a must. And if you don’t need another safety in the deep third to patrol it correctly, all the better.
  • A majority of snaps at safety. A lot of players who are classified as safeties are basically slot defenders, and those guys will have their own list.
  • A minimum of explosive plays allowed. You’re always going to give up completions, of course, but the fewer explosives you give up, the better. Safety is as much or more a position of preventing explosive plays as it is about doing stuff that shows up on highlight reels.
  • Run support is important, but in today’s NFL, that’s probably not going to get you close to the top if it’s your primary thing.
  • The ability to create pressure with blitzes is also a factor, but not a primary one. We’re looking as much or more here for safeties who allow other defenders to create pressure with their own coverage.

With all that out of the way, here are my 11 best safeties in the NFL as we all prepare for the 2023 season — and next month’s list of the top 101 players in the game today.
