How did SEC West teams perform when compared to preseason expectations?

The LSU Tigers won the SEC West and will face the Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC championship game. LSU won the SEC West despite not having a single media voter project them to win the division.

Kirk Herbstreit releases his college football top six rankings: Florida Gators out, but how is Iowa State ranked over Georgia?

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit released his latest rankings of the top six teams with hopes of making the College Football Playoff. There’s only one week left to go in college football, but this upcoming week will feature the SEC and ACC Championships, which both have CFP implications.

There weren’t  many top teams playing in Week 15’s action. LSU upset Florida behind a boot from kicker Cade York and a show throw from Florida defensive back Marco Wilson in the biggest game of the week.

Clemson, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Iowa State, Cincinnati, and Ohio State all either had the week off or had their games postponed. The Cincinnati Bearcats haven’t played in nearly a month. Alabama cruised past Arkansas in another dominant victory. The Crimson Tide look like college football’s top team this season.

In the ACC, Notre Dame and Clemson are going to have a rematch in the ACC Championship. The winner of that game certainly makes the CFP, but if Notre Dame loses, then they are still going to make it.

Here’s who Kirk Herbstreit puts in his top six schools:

Notably, Herbstreit now ranks Iowa State over Georgia and Florida. Iowa State is one of the hottest teams in college football, but they opened the season with an embarrassing 31-14 loss to Louisiana. Yes, Louisiana is ranked, but they still blew out Iowa State.

Georgia has only lost to Florida and Alabama, which are much superior competition than Louisiana. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter because there’s essentially no path to the College Football Playoff for Georgia.

Kirk Herbstreit updates his College Football Playoff rankings. Where is Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and more?

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit named his latest rankings of the top six teams with hopes of making the College Football Playoff. There weren’t many upsets in Week 14’s action. Coastal Carolina knocked off BYU in the biggest game of the week. Coastal Carolina now has a chance to make a New Year’s Six bowl.

Clemson and Ohio State won in convincing conference wins. The Florida Gators slipped by Tennessee and Texas A&M won against Auburn. Indiana defeated Wisconsin cementing one of their better seasons in recent memory. Alabama dominated LSU and the Georgia Bulldog game against Vanderbilt was postponed.

In the SEC, Alabama and Florida are now set to play each other in the SEC Championship. The SEC Championship winner will make the College Football Playoff and either Florida quarterback Kyle Trask or Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is expected to win the Heisman.

In the ACC, Notre Dame and Clemson are going to have a rematch in the ACC Championship. Ohio State looks like the only other serious College Football Playoff contender. Texas A&M could get in if Florida loses in the SEC Championship Game, but the Aggies will need more help than that.

Notably, Herbstreit now ranks Texas A&M over Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Bearcats didn’t play on Dec. 5. They’ll face Tulsa in one of their last games to impress the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.

Cincinnati would need lot help going forward. They still could make the College Football Playoff if Florida and Clemson lose in their conference championships. Still, the Bearcats would need Texas A&M to lose to either Mississippi or Tennessee.

SEC Week 5 Conference Power Rankings

The Alabama Crimson Tide top the week 5 SEC Power Rankings following their win over Georgia.

The Georgia Bulldogs got outscored 21-0 in the second half against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Stetson Bennett threw three interceptions for the University of Georgia. The Dawgs fell 41-24 to Alabama, who showed off their superior offense and quarterback play.

Mac Jones, Jaylen Waddle, and DeVonta Smith had their way with Georgia’s defense. The Alabama offensive line won the battle in the trenches and their defense got a pair of deflections that led to interceptions.

Additionally, in week five SEC action, the Arkansas Razorbacks beat the Ole Miss Rebels. Jimbo Fisher, Kellen Mond, and the Texas A&M Aggies defeated Mike Leach and the reeling Mississippi State Bulldogs.

South Carolina got a huge win over Auburn and Kentucky blew out Tennessee. Here’s SEC Mike’s week five power rankings:

What do you think of the rankings. It is hard to disagree with the top. Texas A&M should probably be over Arkansas and Ole Miss seems too high, but they did beat Kentucky.

4-star DE Elijah Jeudy decommits from Georgia football

The Georgia Bulldogs have lost a commitment from defensive end Elijah Jeudy, a four-star member of the class of 2021.

The Georgia Bulldogs have lost a commitment in the class of 2021. Four-star defensive end Elijah Jeudy has decided to decommit from the University of Georgia. Jeudy originally committed to UGA on his birthday.

He plays football for Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He was joined D’Andre Swift and Mark Webb as the latest Georgia players from Philly. Jeudy chose UGA over Texas A&M, Tennessee, Oregon and LSU back in the spring. Those will be among the teams competing to land Jeudy now that he has made his decommitment.

Elijah Jeudy announced his decision to decommit from the University of Georgia via his Twitter account:

Jeudy did give fans a date to pay attention to in the future. He plans to announce his commitment on signing day. It sounds like Jeudy is still considering the Georgia Bulldogs and we will update fans whenever he decides to make his final commitment.

College Football News ranks SEC head coaches: Where’s Kirby Smart?

College Football News ranked the top SEC head coaches. Where is Georgia football’s Kirby Smart?

Pete Fiutak of College Football News recently released a list ranking the SEC head coaches heading into the 2020 season.

Checking in at No. 3 on the list is Georgia’s Kirby Smart, who trails only Nick Saban (1) and Ed Orgeron (2).

At No. 4 is Dan Mullen and at No. 5 is Gus Malzahn.

As much as I’d love for Smart to be in that No. 2 spot, I do not disagree with Fiutak here.

Smart’s time will come, and within the next five years he may very well occupy that No. 1 spot.

For now, he’s sitting at No. 3 on Fiutak’s list, likely right on the verge of taking over that No. 2 ranking. As long as he keeps winning the SEC East, beating rivals and putting his team in striking distance for the College Football Playoff…he’ll be considered a top-five coach in America.

Orgeron or Smart at No. 2 was likely a somewhat difficult decision. Fiutak went with Coach O since he accomplished something Kirby hasn’t yet, a national championship.

I’ve heard it all – “Anyone could win with that roster.”

Sure, Smart probably would have won it with that roster LSU had last year. But, at the end of the day, he didn’t have that roster. No other way around it.

Also, how can you not love Coach O?

As for Saban, there’s no arguing that one.

Ranking SEC head coaches heading into 2020 CFB season

We ranked all the SEC head coaches, from Georgia football’s Kirby Smart, to Arkansas’ Sam Pittman, to Florida’s Dan Mullen.

The SEC is loaded with head coaching talent as we head into the 2020 college football season.

You have your usuals – Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Gus Malzahn, Ed Orgeron, etc.

But then you have your familiar, or in some cases not-so-familiar, yet new faces: Lane Kiffin, Mike Leach, Sam Pittman, Eli Drinkwitz.

Ranking the SEC head coaches heading into the 2020 season is as hard as it’s ever been, and that’s because of all these new hirings. But it’s also because Jeremy Pruitt waited until October to start winning games in Tennessee last year. It’s because Ed Orgeron took a loaded roster and won a national title. Because Gus Malzahn and Auburn always have the talent but can’t seem to win the big ones. Or because, despite a 4-8 season, Will Muschamp was able to knock off Kirby Smart and Georgia.

With all of this taken into consideration, here’s our SEC head coaching power rankings for the 2020 college football season:

14. Sam Pittman, Arkansas

I would have loved to get Pittman into a higher spot on this list, but what is there to go off of? His last head coaching job came in 1992 and 1993 when he led Hutchinson Community College to an 11–9–1 record over two seasons.

I am 100% rooting for Pittman to succeed in his first season as head coach of the Arkansas Razorbacks. It won’t be easy, and this is a team that will likely finish with at least five losses for the first few years, but that’s not necessarily a terrible thing as long as they play hard.

Arkansas may not field the most talented teams in the SEC, but if there’s one thing I’m certain of it’s that the former UGA O-Line coach will make sure his guys fight harder than anybody.

13. Eli Drinkwitz, Missouri

Drinkwitz gets the No. 13 spot because of what he was able to do at App State last year. In his first season as a head coach, he led the Mountaineers to a 12-1 record and a Sun Belt championship.

But that’s not the SEC. It’s going to be a rocky road ahead for Drinkwitz, as Mizzou will definitely not be one of the more talented teams in the league for a few years.

12. Derek Mason, Vanderbilt

I often find myself rooting for Vanderbilt and Mason.

He took over at Vandy when James Franklin left for Penn State, and though it’s been tough at times, you get the feeling that Commodore fans actually look forward to their seasons.

11. Will Muschamp, South Carolina

If Muschamp had not beaten Georgia last year, he maybe would not even be on this list at all.

But he won and that probably saved his job. He coaches up a good defense, but South Carolina will need to crank up its recruiting efforts if it wants to start contending in the SEC East. Another season with no bowl game may put an end to Muschamp’s head coaching career with the Gamecocks.

10. Lane Kiffin, Ole Miss

Kiffin is a good football coach, there’s no denying that. No. 10 is pretty low for an offensive genius like him. But this conference is simply loaded.

Kiffin did a great job at Florida Atlantic, but I still need to see him win consistently at a Power 5 school.

The Athletic ranked the best coaches in college football, but did they rank Georgia football’s Kirby Smart too low?

This week, Stewart Mandel and Bruce Feldman of The Athletic ranked college football’s top coaches.

Kirby Smart checked in relatively high on both lists, but is he high enough?

The Georgia Bulldogs will face off against the LSU Tigers in the 2019 SEC Championship Game next week. LSU has been one of the most impressive teams in the country this season. Joe Burrow and the Tigers have been impossible to stop.

Georgia will have it’s hands full, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Can Jake Fromm and company score enough to keep up with LSU’s high scoring attack?

Georgia’s biggest weakness on defense is their passing defense. Georgia will hope to make the Tigers one-dimensional. LSU has looked far more impressive against Texas A&M than Georgia did. LSU dominated in the first half and went up 31-0.

Georgia will also be without some key players against LSU. Jake Fromm will miss George Pickens in the first half and Lawrence Cager, but LSU’s defense may be softer than most defenses in the SEC.

The path to the playoff is simple for UGA: beat LSU. It’s easier said than done. The undefeated Tigers will be Georgia’s biggest test of the season. Georgia will need big performances from the secondary and pass rush. Kirby Smart and company must disrupt Joe Burrow, who is on pace to win the Heisman and set the FBS completion percentage record.

Georgia football TBT: Herschel Walker’s 76 yard TD run vs TAMU

The Georgia Bulldogs are hosting the Texas A&M Aggies for the first time since 1980. UGA’s Herschel Walker scored three touchdowns that day.

The Georgia Bulldogs are hosting the Texas A&M Aggies for the first time since 1980, the last season the Bulldogs won a national championship. Freshman sensation Herschel Walker lead the Dawgs to a 42-0 shutout on the day. Walker had 21 carries for 145 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Georgia fans can hope the Bulldogs will host the Aggies 39 years later in another championship-winning season. D’Andre Swift will try to impersonate Herschel Walker in what may be Swift’s final game in Athens.

Texas A&M comes into the game at 7-3 with their losses coming to: Clemson, Alabama, and Auburn. The Aggies are certainly battled-tested. Kellen Mond and company are playing their best football of the season. Georgia’s defense will look to shutdown Jimbo Fisher’s offense in what’s expected to be a rainy game.
