Roster moves: Eagles officially announce 53 man roster after trade, several cuts

Roster moves: Eagles announce 53 man roster

After weeks of training camp practices and four days of roster cuts, the Philadelphia Eagles just announced their initial 53-man roster for the 2021 NFL season.

Everything is fluid in the NFL, meaning some of the names could change by as early as Wednesday afternoon.

In a shocking move, the Eagles are only keeping three running backs on the roster, while J.J. Arcega-Whiteside was the fifth wide receiver to make the roster. Camp standout Tyree Jackson made the roster, although he’ll likely end up on the injured reserve.

Eagles’ CB Darius Slay on whether he’ll shadow the opposing team’s top WR

Eagles’ CB Darius Slay on whether he’ll travel with the opposing team’s top WR

The Eagles added cornerback Steven Nelson to the roster this summer to compliment Darius Slay, but the veteran cornerback is still approaching this season like he’s on an island.

While talking to the media after open practice with the New York Jets, Slay was asked about potentially shadowing the opposing team’s top wide receiver. The normally confident Eagles star had this to say.

“Of course,” Slay said on Tuesday via NBC Sports Philadelphia. “For me, me being a competitor, that’s what I want to do. [Gannon] knows that too. We’ll see when the season comes up though.”

Last season under former defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Slay’s role changed from week to week, depending on the matchups or schemes. Against the Seahawks and Packers, Slay spent the majority of that matchup shadowing DK Metcalf and Davante Adams.

Under Jonatha Gannon, Philadelphia is likely to play even more zone coverage, coupled with multiple looks upfront.

Potential Bills target Steve Nelson signs with Eagles

Potential #Bills target Steve Nelson signs with #Eagles:

The Bills will not be adding cornerback Steven Nelson to their No. 2 position battle with training camp beginning this week.

In May, a report indicated the Bills were among teams interested in signing the former Steelers defensive back. Last week, Nelson teased that he was close to making a decision on where he’d play in 2021.

That held true, as the free agent did eventually sign with a team. It was not the Bills.

The Eagles announced that Nelson signed a one-year deal with the club. Nelson’s contract is only one year in length, however, he did earn a potential $4 million pay day with incentives.

That price might have put the Bills out of the running for him, although, they could have afforded it. Per Spotrac, the Bills enter training camp with near $9M in cap space.

Regardless, Nelson heads to the NFC East side.

Without Nelson, the Bills head to training camp with incumbent Levi Wallace battling Dane Jackson for playing time at the No. 2 cornerback spot.
