Oklahoma set to receive a visit from nation’s top linebacker, Sammy Brown

Oklahoma will receive an April visit from the top linebacker in the class of 2024, Sammy Brown.

Brent Venables’ reputation is still revered amongst recruits despite the 6-7 season Oklahoma experienced in 2022.

There’s no better proof than by looking at the two recruiting classes Oklahoma has brought in with Venables. In 2022, he finished with the No. 8 recruiting class in the cycle after just two months on the job. In 2023, the Sooners landed the No. 4 class in his first year on the recruiting trail for the Sooners.

Enter Sammy Brown, the nation’s No. 1 linebacker in the 2024 class and No. 2 player in the state of Georgia.

Brown spoke with 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong regarding his recruitment. He doesn’t know where else he’ll visit this spring and summer, but there’s one place he’s sure of; The University of Oklahoma.

“We’re definitely going to take that trip,” Brown’s father, Mike, tells 247Sports.

With Oklahoma slated to get an unofficial visit in April during his spring break, it solidifies the Sooners still have a puncher’s chance for the top 10 ten prospect.

Venables and Brown have had a long-standing relationship. Brown went to football camp with Clemson when he was coming up as a younger player. The Tigers’ defensive staff, then led by Brent Venables, extended an offer. Brown received an offer from Oklahoma, and Venables and Ted Roof have been on top of this recruitment.

Sammy’s father Mike believes that the younger Brown knows who his top five are and could see that list coming out in the near future. Along with Oklahoma’s recruiting efforts, the other contenders look to be Clemson, Georgia, and Ohio State.

Oklahoma will have to turn up the pressure, especially with the back-to-back national champions in the race. They have the recent national success and the development pipeline working in tandem. Being the hometown team certainly works in the Bulldogs favor as well.  It’s an enticing sell, and one Oklahoma will have to overcome in order to land one of the nation’s best defenders.

Will the move to the SEC and the relationship with Venables be enough to sway Brown away from Georgia and Clemson to don Crimson and Cream? Receiving that unofficial visit will give Oklahoma significant momentum to stay in the hunt.

247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong offers high praise for LSU signees at All-American Bowl

The four Tigers who attended the week’s festivities in San Antonio impressed, according to Wiltfong.

The All-American Bowl was played on Saturday in San Antonio, and the quartet of LSU players on hand made some buzz.

All of them received superlatives from the week, per multiple publications, and now there’s even more excitement surrounding a 2023 recruiting class for the Tigers that already ranked squarely in the national top 10.

LSU had receiver [autotag]Jalen Brown[/autotag], tight end [autotag]Ka’Morreun Pimpton[/autotag], offensive tackle [autotag]DJ Chester[/autotag] and linebacker [autotag]Whit Weeks[/autotag] on hand this week, and 247Sports national director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong offered high praise for all four.

Here’s what Wiltfong said about the group after the conclusion of the week.

I love how potent LSU’s offense could be with guys like receiver Jalen Brown and tight end Ka’Morreun Pimpton. If Brown has daylight, he’s a blur that can light up the scoreboard on any touch and could also be a fun return guy. Pimpton is going to stretch the field and create mismatches. Offensive lineman DJ Chester could play anywhere across the front for the Tigers as well. Future LSU linebacker Whit Weeks validated his stock as much as anyone. An every-down player that was around the football a lot during practice and in the game.

After a successful Year 1 under [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] that saw the team win 10 games and reach the SEC Championship, expectations will be understandably high in 2023 after landing such a strong signing class with potential immediate impact players like these.

Carver five-star duo receive crystal balls in favor of the Crimson Tide

Good news for the Crimson Tide for some of the top in-state talent.

Early signing day is just a week away and [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama Crimson Tide are expected to have an impressive haul.

Two players that are not yet committed but are garnering massive attention are the pair of five-star defensive prospects from Montgomery’s Carver High School, outside linebacker Qua Russaw and defensive lineman James Smith.

Russaw and Smith are expected to be a package deal and Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports recently dropped a crystal ball for each prospect, both in favor of the Crimson Tide.

Smith and Russaw are the top two players in the state of Alabama for the class of 2023 according to 247’s Composite Rankings.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor both Smith and Russaw leading up to signing day.

New projections have Sooners as favorites for 2023 4-star edge Tausili Akana

Oklahoma has surged into the lead for four-star LB/edge Tausili Akana. From @thatmanbryant

We are eight days away from the opening of the early signing period for the 2023 football recruits across the country. Teams are making last-minute pushes to secure commitments those early signatures next week.

Along with the transfer portal, December is a crazy month. Especially if you factor in bowl prep for the teams fortunate enough to play in one.

Recruiting never stops, however. As Oklahoma looks to finish strongly, it is trending in a positive direction for another top-flight defensive prospect.

One of their remaining targets, four-star edge Tausili Akana is trending in favor of the Oklahoma Sooners.

Akana plays his high school ball in Utah but is a native of Hawaii. He’s been on the Sooners’ radar for months, and Brent Venables took the lead in his recruitment. It seems the head coach’s efforts have been rewarded. Three predictions in favor of Oklahoma hit the internet Tuesday afternoon

Not only are there three predictions, but one of them came from national recruiting director for 247Sports Steve Wiltfong. Wiltfong’s ears are everywhere, and if he’s confident enough to drop a crystal ball, that’s great news for the Sooners.

In addition to Wiltfong’s prediction, Brandon Drumm of OUInsider at 247Sports, Josh McCuistion of Sooner Scoop and Rivals and Tyler Bannerman also of Rivals issued predictions in favor of the Sooners.

Oklahoma on Monday secured the services of four-star safety Daeh McCullough as it continues to round out its 2023 class. It two big fish (Peyton Bowen and David Hicks) remain committed to other schools, but Oklahoma will fight to the end.

A commitment by Akana would help push Oklahoma closer to a top five finish in the team recruiting rankings.

Report: Ohio State recruiting top transfer portal defensive back

Would love to see him in Scarlet and Grey. #GoBucks

If there was one glaring issue this year for the Buckeyes, it was the cornerbacks. It was a trying season for this group, as none of them registered an interception, costly penalties were called on them in high pressure moments and they got burned, either not making the tackle or getting “mossed.”

It makes plenty of sense that [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] would look to the portal for immediate help and after yesterday’s madness, [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] has emerged as a contender for former [autotag]Virginia[/autotag] cornerback [autotag]Fentrell Cypress II[/autotag] according to a report by 247Sports Steve Wiltfong. According to Wiltfong’s source, the Buckeyes “are on him hard” and after reaching out on Monday afternoon.

Cypress II was at the top of my list for targets as the easiest way for this group to have instant improvement is through the portal. Even though he wouldn’t be able to help during the College Football Playoff run, Cypress II would be a welcome addition to the cornerback room.

Elite 2024 running back has Notre Dame in his top group

Looks like the Irish lead his recruitment

The 2023 class has yet to even had the opportunity to sign but with the early period coming up next month, it’s getting close to looking forward to the 2024 cycle. The Irish have already gotten a head start on that class, already with seven early commits in the class.

Today, [autotag]Aneyas Williams[/autotag] of Missouri dropped his top 10 schools and Notre Dame was included along with Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Ohio State, Florida, Penn State, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ole Miss. Williams is one of the best in the country and already is trending to the Irish. 247Sports national recruiting lead, Steve Wiltfong, has crystal balled the five-foot-eleven and 195-pound back to Notre Dame.

This would be a massive recruiting win for [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag], beating out some very good programs for Williams signature. It is still early but it does look like at this point in his recruitment, the Irish are in the drivers seat.

Notre Dame trending to flip current Texas Tech wide receiver commit

Could a flip be coming soon?

It is undoubtably a huge game for the Irish, not just one the field but off it as well. This game is one of the biggest during this weekends slate of games, with two teams that are perennially involved in the College Football Playoff conversation.

Even though Notre Dame has struggled during year one of the Marcus Freeman era, they have still rattled off more than a few solid wins, which include Syracuse, North Carolina and BYU. Another opportunity is in front of them to win against another ranked opponent, but the chance for them to win on the recruiting trail is gaining steam as well.

Current 2023 Texas Tech commit, wide receiver Kaleb Smith, will visit South Bend this weekend and two of 247Sports recruiting analysts (Steve Wiltfong and Tom Loy) have logged crystal balls for Smith to flip to the Irish.

Smith has been committed to Tech since February, but the Irish have come on hard recently. It is unknown if Smith will make an announcement for Notre Dame, but like the saying goes, if there’s smoke, there’s a fire. In this case the fire is a good thing.

Oklahoma receives several predictions from 247Sports to land 5-star DL David Hicks

With several more 247Sports crystal ball predictions in favor of OU, the Sooners looks to be leading the race for 5-star DL David Hicks.

The coaching staff for the Oklahoma Sooners is fishing for the big one. The big one in this case? Five-star defensive line prospect David Hicks. Hicks has offers from every major program in the country. He’s being courted heavy hitters like Texas A&M, Alabama, and Oklahoma.

However, something has tipped the scales in a big way for the Sooners.

In the spring, it looked as if the Aggies were the frontrunners for Hicks in the wake of their top rated class in the 2022 cycle. The summer rolled around and Oklahoma gained ground on the recruiting trail while making up ground in the race for Hicks. We are now days away from kickoff for the 2022 season and Oklahoma looks like the favorite to land the elite 2023 prospect.

That type of declaration can only be made when multiple insiders across multiple recruiting sites put in predictions for Oklahoma. As it stands, Oklahoma currently leads in predictions on Rivals, On3, and after today’s predictions: 247Sports.

OUInsider recruiting analysts Brandon Drumm and Parker ThuneBrandon Drumm and Parker Thune each issued a crystal ball projection in favor of Oklahoma.

As if two crystal balls from those two weren’t enough, 247Sports college football Director of College Football Recruiting Steve Wiltfong also dropped a prediction in Oklahoma’s favor.

The pendulum has officially swung in favor of the crimson and cream.

Oklahoma’s momentum on the recruiting trail, the rave reviews from so many families about the culture they are creating, and the caliber of defense Brent Venables is capable of orchestrating are winning families and recruits over.

Todd Bates is a master recruiter of defensive line talent and even more so he’s a developmental guru sending multiple players to the NFL.

Hicks wouldn’t be wrong for wanting to be one of the faces of this 2023 recruiting class and being at the forefront of an OU defensive resurgence. At his current trajectory and based on what folks in the recruiting industry have said about him, he’s on a crash course for the NFL.

Oklahoma will have to keep their foot on the gas to stave off Alabama and Texas A&M but an official visit to Norman for Bedlam is already secured. Hicks also has an official visit scheduled with Alabama this fall. This race is far from over but Oklahoma is officially a threat and maybe, just maybe, the leader to land David Hicks.

Oklahoma Sooners land commitment from lightning fast WR Anthony Evans

Oklahoma continues its insane recruiting summer as it lands yet another talented four-star player, wide receiver Anthony Evans.

Speed kills. It’s something that simply can’t be taught and some guys are simply difference makers with it no matter their size.

That’s the perfect way to introduce Oklahoma’s newest offensive commit, 2023 wide receiver Anthony Evans.

Evans sent a ripple across the college football recruiting landscape when he picked Oklahoma over the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday evening.

Evans had been widely presumed to be leaning heavily toward Georgia for at least the past month. But mere hours before his commitment predictions from Joey Helmer of 247Sports and the king of college football recruiting news, Steve Wiltfong, raised eyebrows. Helmer put in a prediction for Oklahoma while Wiltfong, who had initially predicted Georgia flipped his pick to Oklahoma.

Evans is a small player but he’s plenty explosive. He stands under six feet and is 167 pounds. The four-star prospect from Converse, Texas, is ranked as the No. 45 wide receiver in the country and the 350th-best player overall by the 247Sports composite.

Evans was offered by Oklahoma on April 15. He visited OU on June 3 and made his official visit to Athens the following weekend before sitting and weighing his options. With his commitment, the Sooners add some electricity to their receiving corps next year. The speedy Evans will pair with another fast wideout, Jaquaize Pettaway.

Offensively, this may be it for Oklahoma barring a commitment from 2023 TE/WR Malachi Coleman or a surprise commit not currently on OU’s radar.

247Sports’ Director of Recruiting predictions MSU football lands 2023 4-star DL Jalen Thompson

Michigan State could be close to adding another four-star prospect to their 2023 class

Michigan State could be close to adding another four-star prospect to their 2023 class.

Steve Wiltfong — director of recruiting for 247Sports — submitted a crystal ball prediction in favor of Michigan State for four-star defensive lineman Jalen Thompson on Saturday. Thompson hails from Detroit, and is slated to announce his college decision on Aug. 22.

Thompson ranks as the No. 30 defensive lineman and No. 195 overall prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings. He ranks as the No. 3 player in Michigan in the 2023 class.

Thompson holds offers from 30 programs, according to 247Sports. He is reportedly considering Cincinnati, Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt and Michigan State at this time.

Thompson has long been projected to end up at Michigan State from other reliable recruiting insiders, such as Justin Thind, Corey Robinson, Stephen Brooks and Allen Trieu. So it isn’t surprising to see Wiltfong also enter a crystal ball for the Spartans to get Thompson, but with it being a more recent submission it at least shows Michigan State is considered to still be the favorite in this race. We will see soon enough if that is actually the case.
