90 days until Vikings season opener: Every player to wear No. 90

We take a look at every player to wear No. 90 for the Minnesota Vikings as we reach 90 days until the season opener.

It’s the final countdown…

Well, sort of.

The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2023 regular season in 90 days at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10.

From now until then, we will take a trip down memory lane and count each day by revisiting the players that have worn that specific jersey number.

Esezi Otomewo currently wears No. 90 for the Vikings and has worn the number since last season. However, Derrick Alexander likely saw the most success in the number, totaling 17.5 sacks in four seasons.

With 90 days until kickoff, here’s a look at every player to wear No. 90 with the Vikings (via Pro Football Reference):

Every player drafted 13th overall in the last 20 years, including Jets’ Sheldon Richardson

A look at the No. 13 overall picks over the past 20 drafts.

The Jets have the No. 13 pick in the upcoming NFL draft and they are hoping that 13 will be very lucky for them, as it has been for a few teams over the years. One of those picks turned out to be a certain defensive tackle for the Los Angeles Rams that was deemed too small.

The Jets have had the 13th pick in recent memory when they selected Sheldon Richardson in 2013.

Will the Jets find success with their first-round pick this year? That remains to be seen. For now, let’s look back at the players selected 13th overall in the last 20 years.

5 defensive tackles Chargers could consider signing

A look at five defensive tackles the Chargers should consider amid season-ending injuries to Christian Covington and Otito Ogbonnia.

The Chargers are down to three defensive tackles on the active roster following the season-ending injuries to Austin Johnson and, most recently, Christian Covington and Otito Ogbonnia.

Head coach Brandon Staley confirmed Monday that the team will promote Joe Gaziano from the practice squad and add two more players to fill the position group.

Tyeler Davison was signed off the Browns’ practice squad on Tuesday morning, which means they could look to sign one more.

Who else could Los Angeles add to the room?

Let’s take a look at five interior defenders that would make sense.

The NFL’s best remaining free agents, from Odell Beckham Jr. on down

NFL free agents can still make a difference, even this close to the regular season. Here are the best players still on the open market, for whatever reason.

On Thursday, September 8, the NFL’s 2022 regular season officially begins when the Los Angeles Rams host the Buffalo Bills. Teams have already been busy between wrapping up their training camps, prepping for Week 1, and both waiving and claiming players based on the league’s mandated roster cuts last Tuesday.

There is one more aspect of team-building that every franchise will pay some level of attention to at this point: Are there available free agents who can help our team for the right price? There are still valuable free agents on the open market. Some are recovering from injuries, or bad seasons, or they’ve already fielded multiple offers, and they’re either weighing the best opportunity, or just waiting for training camp to end so they don’t have to deal with that.

Here are our best remaining free agents with one calendar week left to go before the regular season; don’t be surprised if the majority of these guys get snapped up somewhere before the Rams and Bills kick things off.

Updated list of Vikings free agents still left unsigned

Here’s a list of Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned.

The Minnesota Vikings are preparing for their first padded practice in their second week of training camp, while former players for the team are still looking for a job.

There are multiple key veteran players, including four-time Pro Bowler Anthony Barr, waiting around for the right offer from another team. Granted, it was recently reported that the Dallas Cowboys should be one of the teams to watch out for as a potential suitor for Barr.

And perhaps that’ll be the case for some of the other names on this list with interest eventually coming from other teams.

As we get deeper into training camp and eventually the preseason, more opportunities will arise with players getting injured or even cut from teams. That could open the door for players on this list to get back on the field. But until that happens, the waiting game will continue.

Former Vikings offensive tackle Rashod Hill was recently picked up by the Washington Commanders. So opportunity can clearly come knocking at any moment.

4 defensive linemen the Rams could sign to provide depth in 2022

With Bobby Brown suspended, the Rams need some additional depth on the defensive line. They should consider signing one of these four free agents.

The Los Angeles Rams boast a formidable starting defensive line unit that features Aaron Donald, Greg Gaines, and A’Shawn Robinson. But behind Donald, Gaines, and Robinson, the Rams are lacking depth along the defensive front.

The lack of depth stems from Sebastian Joseph-Day departing in free agency, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. The recent news of Bobby Brown being suspended for the first six games of the upcoming campaign due to a PED violation hurts the depth even more, leaving the defensive line thin.

With the Rams needing some help on the defensive line, here are four players they should consider signing ahead of the 2022 season.

Is Panthers’ next addition coming to its defensive line?

It may finally be time for the Panthers to fulfill the defensive part of GM Scott Fitterer’s offseason promise, and it couldn’t come at a better time.

When Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer appeared virtually before the media for the first time since making what Pro Football Focus called the team’s best offseason move, he understandably spent a lot of time talking about it. From Baker Mayfield’s placement on the quarterback depth chart to his impact on Sam Darnold’s future in Carolina, Fitterer fielded countless questions about the new leader of the offense.

Still, there was a little time left over for some non-Mayfield related inquiries. The most intriguing of those was a semi-transparent plan to address the roster’s most important remaining offseason need.

“I think we’d look at defensive line—maybe a big body in the middle, maybe another pass rusher,” Fitterer said when asked by Chris Jenkins of Charlotte Vibe about his updated list of priorities.

That sentiment echoes a continual commitment by Fitterer to beef up the lines on both sides of the ball. Immediately after Carolina’s 2020 season concluded, Fitterer promised to focus on offensive quarterback protection and defensive quarterback pressure above all else.

“We have to get stout up front on both lines: offensive and defensive,” Fitterer said back in January. “That’s how you build a team.”

The Panthers started with the offense in January, naming James Campen the new offensive line coach. From there, they added guard Austin Corbett, center Bradley Bozeman and tackle Ikem Ekwonu. Using everything from free agency steals to a draft day steal, Carolina impressively fulfilled half of Fitterer’s promise by overhauling its offensive line.

Now, it may finally be time for Carolina to fulfill the other half of that promise—and it couldn’t come at a better time.

Last month, PFF ranked the Panthers’ defensive line as the No. 24 unit in the league after a few critical offseason subtractions. After losing DaQuan Jones in the middle and Haason Reddick and Morgan Fox on the outside, Carolina is relying on its young players to carry the bunch. For Fitterer, though, that doesn’t sound like it’s enough.

In the presser, Fitterer alluded to further work on the defensive line in the near future. Putting his money where his mouth is, the Panthers have already begun doing their homework on at least one of the best free agents available at the position.

Last month, veteran defensive end Carlos Dunlap met with Carolina for a couple of days. Although he didn’t immediately leave with a deal, the 33-year-old South Carolina product could be an impactful addition to the Panthers’ defense.

Dunlap has racked up at least 6.0 sacks in all but one of his 12 seasons, and has career totals of 225 quarterback hits, 117 tackles for a loss, 96.0 sacks and 21 forced fumbles. With a sack total ranking as the eighth-most of all active NFL players, he could help fill the hole left by Reddick’s departure.

Another veteran defensive lineman Carolina could consider is 31-year-old defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson. Richardson has never finished a season with a PFF grade below 62.0 and would bring consistency and experience to a young interior line led by Derrick Brown.

No matter which options the team explores, though, it’s clear that Fitterer isn’t done this offseason. Maybe with a new quarterback, offensive line and defensive line, the Panthers can finally become contenders after a painful process of rebuilding.

Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned

Heading into the month of July, these are the Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned.

Training camp is right around the corner, and there are still impactful Minnesota Vikings free agents that have yet to be picked up by a team.

There have been some updates since we last checked in a month ago, most notably with wide receiver Chad Beebe finding a home with the Houston Texans, and Dede Westbrook receiving a contract offer to return to Minnesota.

Beebe fell through the cracks when he was still with the Vikings due to the rapidly growing talent at the receiver position. The arrival of players like K.J. Osborn and Ihmir Smith-Marsette pretty much ensured that he’d never see the field.

He’s hopeful that’ll change as a veteran for a Texans team seeking new direction.

Meanwhile, Westbrook still remains a free agent, despite receiving a contract offer from the Vikings after a spring workout. However, he turned down that offer, and the team signed Albert Wilson to a one-year deal instead.

Keep in mind, more opportunities will obviously open up when teams get into camp, and rosters are impacted by performance and injuries. Here’s the list of Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned in July.

List of remaining unsigned Vikings free agents

There are some surprising names on this list

With OTAs wrapping up and veteran mandatory minicamp right around the corner, there are still some noteworthy names on the list of Minnesota Vikings free agents that remain unsigned.

The biggest name on that list is obviously former four-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro outside linebacker Anthony Barr.

After spending eight seasons with the Vikings, Barr’s contract was allowed to expire in the offseason ahead of the regime shift in Minnesota.

Not only did the team replace him with Za’Darius Smith, but they also gave away the No. 55 jersey he wore during his time with the franchise.

It’s a bit shocking that he’s still one of the players on this list considering he’s more than capable of helping a team in need at the linebacker position. The same could be said about other names on this list as well, assuming they end up in the right situation.

Here are the Vikings free agents that still remain unsigned to this point.
