Rams projected to receive 4 compensatory picks in 2024 NFL draft

The Rams are projected to receive an extra four picks in the 2024 NFL draft for their free-agent losses last offseason

The Los Angeles Rams suffered significant losses in free agency last offseason, watching several starters leave last March. That list of players included Greg Gaines, David Edwards, A’Shawn Robinson, Matt Gay, Taylor Rapp, Nick Scott and David Long Jr. Baker Mayfield also left after a brief stint in Los Angeles, signing a one-year deal with the Bucs where he earned the starting job.

The Rams knew that if they let these players leave in free agency, they’d recoup draft picks for many of them in the form of compensatory picks. The NFL awards extra draft picks to compensate teams for their free-agent losses, and the Rams are projected to earn four extra picks in 2024 for their departures last offseason.

According to Over The Cap, the Rams are expected to receive a fifth-round pick for Mayfield, as well as sixth-rounders for Gay, Robinson and Scott. That puts the Rams at the maximum of four compensatory picks, which is how many they received in each of the last two years, as well.

The compensatory pick formula is complex, but it’s mostly determined by a player’s contract value, as well as any postseason accolades and the number of snaps played. Over The Cap notes that because Mayfield earned incentives for his snaps played, touchdown passes, passing yards and the Bucs’ playoff win, it increased his APY into the range of a fifth-round pick instead of a sixth-rounder.

That’s great news for the Rams, of course, so they can thank Mayfield for that.

The NFL will announce the finalized compensatory picks closer to the draft, but as of now, it looks like the Rams will receive four extra picks in addition to the selections they already have – including a first-rounder at No. 19 overall.

Rams have 2nd-most dead money in NFL this year: Here’s how it breaks down

The Rams currently have $74.2 million in dead money this year, which is the second-most in the NFL.

It’s no secret that the Los Angeles Rams are looking toward the future with how they’ve conducted business since the conclusion of the 2022 season. After acquiring them via trade or in free agency in recent years, the Rams have parted ways with Jalen Ramsey, Leonard Floyd, Bobby Wagner, and Allen Robinson — among others — this offseason.

By moving on from these players, the Rams have freed up cap space for future years, but they’ll be eating quite a bit of dead cap in 2023, as a result. Dead cap, or dead money, is defined as money that a team still owes when a player is released, traded, or if they have void years included in their contracts.

According to Over The Cap, following the Robinson trade, the Rams currently have $74.2 million in dead money this season. That is the second-most dead cap in the NFL right now, only behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who currently possess $75.3 million in dead money.

With a large amount of dead money sitting on their books, the Rams are limited in cap space, having only $1.5 million to spend (fifth-fewest in the NFL) right now. Guys like Ramsey, Floyd, Wagner, and Robinson make up a big chunk of the dead money, but we’ll be taking a look at all of the players contributing to the dead cap number below.

A’Shawn Robinson departure not projected to improve Rams’ compensatory picks in 2024

A’Shawn Robinson is signing with the Giants, but his contract isn’t worth enough to improve the Rams’ compensatory picks in 2024

A month after meeting with the New York Giants, A’Shawn Robinson finally agreed to a deal with Big Blue. He’s signing a one-year deal worth up to $8 million, a nice payday for the veteran defensive lineman.

Unfortunately, the words “up to” are important to note because that’s not the base value of the contract. Rather, it’s worth about $4 million with incentives that can drive the value up to $8 million.

As a result, Robinson’s departure isn’t expected to improve the Rams’ compensatory pick situation in 2024. According to Nick Korte of Over The Cap, his contract is on the fringe of a sixth- and seventh-round value for the Rams.

Over The Cap has updated the Rams’ projected comp picks and they’re giving L.A. a seventh-rounder for Robinson leaving. They’re also projected to get two sixth-rounders and two other seventh-rounders, but the maximum is four per team.

So if Robinson nets the Rams a seventh like Nick Scott and Greg Gaines, it won’t matter or improve their projected comp picks next year. Robinson will need to be worth at least a sixth-rounder in order to upgrade one of the Rams’ picks.

A’Shawn Robinson, Giants agree to 1-year deal worth up to $8M

A’Shawn Robinson’s time with the Rams is over after three seasons. He’s agreed to a deal with the Giants in free agency.

Another key member of the Los Angeles Rams defense has found a new home. According to NFL Network, the New York Giants and A’Shawn Robinson have agreed to terms on a one-year deal. It has a max value of $8 million, which is a good payday for the veteran defensive lineman.

Robinson signed with the Rams back in 2020 and spent the last three years with them, helping them win a Super Bowl in his second season. Robinson missed time due to a medical condition in 2020 and suffered a torn meniscus last November, causing him to miss the rest of the season.

In three seasons, he played 35 games with the Rams and started 24 of those, making 121 tackles with two sacks and four tackles for a loss.

He joins Greg Gaines as the second defensive lineman to leave Los Angeles this offseason; Gaines signed a one-year deal with the Buccaneers. The Rams are suddenly thin up front, lacking talent around Aaron Donald on the interior.

A’Shawn Robinson’s visit with Giants went well, signing still possible

A’Shawn Robinson’s visit with the Giants went well and though he didn’t sign a contract, a deal is still possible

A’Shawn Robinson spent the last three years with the Los Angeles Rams but there are no indications right now that he’ll be back for a fourth season. Robinson is a free agent and currently exploring the market, taking a visit with the New York Giants on Monday.

No deal came to fruition, but that doesn’t mean Robinson won’t still sign with the Giants. According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, the visit between Robinson and the Giants went well and a “signing is still possible.”

Robinson has not taken another reported visit yet and there has been no movement on a potential deal with the Rams.

Robinson was limited to eight games in 2020 due to a medical condition and he also missed seven games last season with a torn meniscus. Still a great run defender on the interior, Robinson will provide value on first and second down for whichever team he lands with.

Rams DL A’Shawn Robinson out for season with torn meniscus

A’Shawn Robinson will be sidelined for the rest of the season after tearing his meniscus

The Los Angeles Rams will be without veteran defensive lineman A’Shawn Robinson for the foreseeable future. Sean McVay said on Wednesday that Robinson tore his meniscus and needs surgery, so he’ll be out for the rest of the season.

Robinson has started all 10 games for the Rams this season, making 42 tackles and landing three hits on the quarterback, the most in three seasons with Los Angeles. It’s possible he’s played his last game with the Rams because he’ll be a free agent in March.

Since his first season with the Rams in 2020, he’s played 35 games, made 24 starts and has 121 total tackles with two sacks.

With Robinson out, Marquise Copeland and Bobby Brown III should both see more opportunities on the defensive line.

Sean McVay shares injury updates on A’Shawn Robinson and Ty Nsekhe

Sean McVay said A’Shawn Robinson’s knee injury “doesn’t look good,” but Ty Nsekhe’s ankle injury seems to be minor

A’Shawn Robinson and Ty Nsekhe both went down with injuries during Sunday’s game against the Saints and were unable to return. Robinson injured his knee and Nsekhe hurt his ankle, leaving the Rams without two starters on each line.

On Monday, Sean McVay shared updates on Robinson and Nsekhe. Robinson’s knee injury seems like the more severe of the two, with McVay saying it “doesn’t look good.” He didn’t say how long he could be out, however.

Nsekhe has a sprained ankle and McVay said there’s a chance he could play this weekend against the Chiefs. Bobby Evans replaced Nsekhe on Sunday and struggled mightily in pass protection, allowing five pressures.

If Nsekhe can’t play, the Rams would likely be looking at their 11th different starting offensive line combination in 11 games.

Marquise Copeland, Michael Hoecht and Bobby Brown would be first in line to replace Robinson if he’s out awhile.

A’Shawn Robinson questionable to return with knee injury

A’Shawn Robinson suffered a knee injury in the second quarter and is questionable to return

A’Shawn Robinson was questionable to play against the Saints after missing practice last week with an illness. He wound up suiting up but in the first half, he suffered a knee injury.

The team announced Robinson is questionable to return, which is a blow to the defensive line against the Saints. Bobby Brown and Marquise Copeland will help replace him up front until he’s able to return.

4 defensive linemen the Rams could sign to provide depth in 2022

With Bobby Brown suspended, the Rams need some additional depth on the defensive line. They should consider signing one of these four free agents.

The Los Angeles Rams boast a formidable starting defensive line unit that features Aaron Donald, Greg Gaines, and A’Shawn Robinson. But behind Donald, Gaines, and Robinson, the Rams are lacking depth along the defensive front.

The lack of depth stems from Sebastian Joseph-Day departing in free agency, signing with the Los Angeles Chargers. The recent news of Bobby Brown being suspended for the first six games of the upcoming campaign due to a PED violation hurts the depth even more, leaving the defensive line thin.

With the Rams needing some help on the defensive line, here are four players they should consider signing ahead of the 2022 season.

Raheem Morris: A’Shawn Robinson may have been best player in Super Bowl LVI

Raheem Morris gave A’Shawn Robinson some much-deserved praise, saying he might’ve been the best player in the Super Bowl

There were a lot of great performances from Rams players in Super Bowl LVI. Cooper Kupp was deservingly named MVP, Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes, Aaron Donald sealed the win with a pressure on the last play and two sacks in the game, and Von Miller brought down Joe Burrow twice himself.

But one player who didn’t necessarily get as much credit as he should have was A’Shawn Robinson. The Rams’ defensive end had six tackles, one sack, a QB hit and a tackle for a loss, dominating up front for Los Angeles. He also had three total pressures and the third-best grade of any Rams player in the Super Bowl, according to PFF.

Raheem Morris recognized the play of Robinson recently while on “The Pivot” podcast, saying calling him maybe the best player in the Super Bowl.

“A’Shawn Robinson, in that game, may have been the best player in the Super Bowl,” Morris said. “Go watch him. Throwin’ hands.”

He brought up Robinson when Ryan Clark and Channing Crowder brought up the talent the Rams had on defense in that game. There was obviously Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey and Von Miller, but Greg Gaines and Robinson did a ton for the defensive line, too, and Morris gave them credit.

They both helped limit the Bengals to just 79 yards rushing, making plays like this one from Robinson.

With Sebastian Joseph-Day leaving in free agency, Gaines and Robinson’s roles will still be huge for Los Angeles alongside Donald and Leonard Floyd. If they play the way they did in the Super Bowl and throughout the postseason, the Rams’ front seven should remain a strength of the team.
