Should the Bucs consider signing LB Shaquille Leonard?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could add some experience to their linebacker group with this well-known veteran who’s still available

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers already have one of the NFL’s best linebackers in veteran Lavonte David, but the other starting spot is a sizable question mark heading into the 2024 season.

Devin White left in free agency, and his spot will be the venue for a training camp battle between K.J. Britt and SirVocea Dennis to join David in the starting lineup.

But there’s an intriguing name the Bucs could sign if they’re looking to add more experience to that competition: Former Indianapolis Colts star Shaquille Leonard.

A three-time first-team All-Pro, Leonard is still looking for a new team, recently telling the Indy Star that he’s hopeful for an opportunity to play in 2024.

“I’m more so just sitting back, getting the body healthy, and whenever the opportunity presents itself, we’ll give it a try,” Leonard told the Star’s Kyle Smedley. “I just continue to be me by working hard.”

Leonard acknowledged that while he’d love to continue playing, he’s at peace with his stellar NFL career.

“If it happens, it happens,” Leonard told Smedley. “If it don’t, it don’t. I think throughout my career I’ve had a great career, even if I do step away from it. … I’m enjoying life and just waiting on that opportunity.”

Injuries have been the primary reason for Leonard’s struggles in recent years, but when healthy, he was obviously among the league’s best. He’ll turn 29 in July, and could still have some good football left if he’s able to avoid injury.

Considering he’d likely come in on a cheap one-year deal, likely for the veteran minimum, it’s possible the Bucs could add him to help push the younger contenders for that other starting spot, and perhaps beat them out.

Texas A&M LB Edgerrin Cooper’s NFL comp ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft

Edgerrin Cooper’s current NFL Comparison according to Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar is interesting say the least!

The 2024 NFL Draft is just two days away. Thirty-two players will hear their names called on Thursday night, and 257 players will embark on a new journey by the end of the weekend. For former Texas A&M linebacker Edgerrin Cooper, becoming a first-round selection is still in the cards, but the start of the second round is much more realistic.

Either way, the 21-year-old backer possesses elite traits that have made him a Top 50 player according to several NFL Draft analysts, including Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar, who just released his final player comparisons ahead of this weekend’s festivities.

Standing at 6-2 and 230 pounds, Cooper’s length and notable speed after running a 4.51 40-yard dash during the NFL combine has spawned a popular comparison to current Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd, but according to Farrar, Cooper’s future is much more comparable to current Philadelphia Eagles LB Shaquille (Shaq) Leonard:

“Among all linebackers in this draft class, nobody has Edgerrin Cooper’s speed to the ballcarrier, and his “see guy/hit guy” playing personality is singularily impressive. Cooper reminds me alot of Shaquille (formerly Darius) Leonard, who was selected by the Inidanapolis Colts in the second round of the 2018 draft out of South Carolina State. The two players are similar size-wise, and at his peak, Leonard had an equivialent ability to rocket accross the field to limit all kind of potential opponent exursions.”

During Leonard’s five-year starting career with the Colts, he was a 3X First-team All-Pro selection while leading the league in tackles during his prolific rookie season. Could Cooper emulate Leonard’s historic first three years in the league? It’s possible, especially after his final season in College Station, which included eight sacks and 19 tackles for loss.

Bleacher Report names Shaquille Leonard as remaining free agent who could help the Browns

Are Leonard and the Browns compatible?

While 2024 NFL free agency has hit a lull, plenty of talented players remain on the open market. In a new article released by Bleacher Report, they have identified former Pro Bowl linebacker Shaquille Leonard as a player who could still benefit the Cleveland Browns.

Speaking on the former Indianapolis Colt and Philadelphia Eagles, BR’s Matt Holder had this to say about the fit in Cleveland:

“While Cleveland signed Jordan Hicks and Devin Bush to address its need at linebacker during free agency, it couldn’t hurt to add one more veteran who can compete for snaps in training camp.

Leonard has battled injuries and said he’s contemplating retirement, but a situation where he’s either a rotational player or two-down defender while ring chasing could be a good fit.”

While Leonard is still a free agency, and the Browns may need another linebacker, these two are not all that compatible. Leonard has proven he can only play on early downs over the last few seasons, and if anything, the Browns need an influx of youth at the linebacker position.

Given the current room, there are not snaps to be found for Leonard, who cannot stay on the field in obvious passing situations after a handful of injuries. The Browns would be better off targeting a player like Michigan’s Junior Colson in the 2024 NFL draft.

Where do the Eagles rank in spending at each position after first wave of free agency?

We’re looking at where the Philadelphia Eagles rank in positional spending at each position after the first wave of NFL free agency

The Eagles have retooled their roster on both sides of the football after inking DE Bryce Huff, RB Saquon Barkley, OLB Zach Baun, OL Matt Hennessy, WR DeVante Parker, S/CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson, LB Devin White, LB Oren Burks, DT PJ Mustipher, WR Parris Campbell, and CB Tyler Hall to deals during the first wave.

Philadelphia then traded for quarterback Kenny Pickett while extending Landon Dickerson and Jake Elliott.

Philadelphia currently has about  $33,657,986 in cap space per Over The Cap, and they’re spending about $100+ million plus on both sides of the football.  The offensive line and edge rusher positions carry the most significant cap space.

Overall positional spending has changed tremendously since Jalen Hurts signed a massive five-year, $255 million contract extension last spring.

This makes him among the four highest-paid players on average in NFL history.

The Eagles will again be a Super Bowl favorite in the NFC and have one of the most talented rosters despite being 17th in average positional spending.

Thanks to Over The Cap, here’s where Philadelphia sits in positional spending on both sides of the ball ahead of the season opener.

Philadelphia then signed Landon Dickerson to a monster contract extension and C.J. Gardner-Johnson to a three-year deal. The Eagles have been in nonstop action so far, and we’re taking an updated look at the current status of Philadelphia’s initial group of free agents.

Ranking 2024’s top 12 free-agent linebackers

“Uce” leads the way for this year’s free-agent linebackers.

As they do with pass rusher Brian Burns, the Carolina Panthers have another top defender ready to hit the open market in linebacker Frankie Luvu. And also like Burns, “Uce” may be sticking around for 2024.

But until we find that out, here’s Luvu and the very best of his free-agent contemporaries:

Biggest surprises from Colts’ 2023 season

The biggest surprises from the Colts’ 2023 season.

The Indianapolis Colts are preparing for a vital offseason that can help further the development of a young roster, but there were plenty of surprises that hit the organization in 2023.

From the turnaround of the offensive line under Tony Sparano to the release of Shaquille Leonard, here are the biggest surprises from the 2023 season for the Colts.

Colts have drafted 26 Senior Bowl prospects since 2017

Every Senior Bowl prospect the Colts have drafted since 2017.

The Senior Bowl is an offseason mile-marker for every team in the NFL, signifying the official start of draft season. However, the Indianapolis Colts put a large significance on the week in Mobile, Alabama.

General manager Chris Ballard hasn’t been shy about his love affair with the Senior Bowl, often citing it as an event to find some diamonds in the rough. Several key players for the Colts were selected in the draft largely due to the Senior Bowl.

In fact, Ballard selected seven prospects from the Senior Bowl during the 2023 NFL draft, the highest number he’s selected in a single draft class during his tenure.

Since Ballard took over as general manager in 2017, the Colts have drafted 27 players who participated in the Senior Bowl and several more who signed with the team as undrafted free agents. We can and should expect the Colts to highly value the Senior Bowl as long as Ballard is around.

As the Senior Bowl takes place this week, here’s a look at every participant the Colts have drafted since Ballard’s tenure began in 2017:
