Ohio State is trying to flip 2023 Notre Dame commit after scholarship offer

Not great

There is blood in the water and there is a feeling that plenty of schools will be looking to flip current Notre Dame commits. There have already been four decommits for the 2023 cycle for the Irish ([autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag], [autotag]Justyn Rhett[/autotag], [autotag]Elijah Paige[/autotag] and [autotag]Sedrick Irvin Jr.[/autotag]) and there is potential for more.

There are rumors that multiple teams are looking to flip the current highest rated Irish commit, safety [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag]. Now it looks like [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] is going to have to keep Ohio State away from one of Notre Dame’s other commits. Today, the Buckeyes offered a scholarship to [autotag]Adon Shuler[/autotag], the New Jersey safety.

If you look through his recent activity on Twitter, most of it has ben pro Notre Dame, including visiting with former Irish star safety [autotag]Kyle Hamilton[/autotag]. There was however a retweet of fellow New Jersey star Vaboue Toure’s offer from Ohio State. Toure is a 2024 prospect but high school teammates with Shuler.

It’s hard to read into that retweet, Shuler could very well be just being happy for his teammate. Unfortunately, the saying, when there’s smoke, there’s a fire could apply here. Time will tell if Shuler is actually considering flipping to Ohio State, but the Buckeyes officially offering the Irish commit is a bit troubling.

Breaking: Notre Dame loses another 2023 commitment

Not the best recruiting news at all

At one point during this 2023 recruiting cycle, Notre Dame held the top spot in the nation but things have certainly changed since sitting atop the recruiting world earlier this year. First it was [autotag]Sedrick Irvin Jr.[/autotag], then [autotag]Justyn Rhett[/autotag] and the biggest decommit, [autotag]Keon Keeley[/autotag].

Keely obviously hurt the most, as he was the highest rated commit and was on the Ohio State sidelines shortly after formally announcing he was not a part of the Irish class anymore.

Today the fourth decommit of the 2023 cycle happened for the Irish as Arizona offensive lineman [autotag]Elijah Paige[/autotag] has decided to step away from his pledge to Notre Dame.

This one was a bit surprising as there was no smoke to Paige leaving the class. With Paige gone, the Irish have twenty-two verbals with four offensive lineman ([autotag]Charles Jagusah[/autotag], [autotag]Sullivan Absher[/autotag], [autotag]Joe Otting[/autotag], and [autotag]Sam Pendleton[/autotag]).

Notre Dame finds ‘23 running back replacement in West coast star

The Irish upgrade at running back

Just under a week ago, Florida running back [autotag]Sedrick Irvin Jr.[/autotag] decided that Notre Dame was not the place for him, decommitting from the Irish. Maybe Irvin Jr. knew what was to come for the 2023 recruiting class.

Today, Irvin Jr.’s “replacement” was found in Washington running back [autotag]Jayden Limar[/autotag]. The five-foot-eleven-inch and 185-pounder verbally committed to [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and the Irish this evening on CBS Sports HQ. He ultimately chose the Irish over Arizona, Michigan and Oregon. Limar is viewed as a better prospect than Irvin Jr. and with rumors of the Irish making waves for another Floridian, [autotag]Richard Young[/autotag], there probably weren’t enough carries for all of them in South Bend.

Back to the good news, as the Irish are getting someone who many view as a high-level running back. Limar’s offer list shows that as he held verbal offers from USC, Texas A&M, and others.

The commitment from Limar is the thirteenth verbal in the 2023 recruiting class. Many view the class that [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] has assembled as one of the best, if not the best, at this current moment of the cycle.

Four-star running back to announce commitment Thursday

Does he end up Irish?

One of the nation’s top running backs in the 2023 recruiting cycle is set to make his college decision Thursday night on CBS Sports Live.

[autotag]Jayden Limar [/autotag]of Lake Stevens (Wash.) High School has Notre Dame among his four finalists and the Irish seem to be the favorite.  Limar checks in as the nation’s 11th overall running back on 247Sports and has offers from some true powerhouses such as Alabama, Georgia, USC, Texas A&M, Texas, Auburn, and several others.

His finalists however are only Notre Dame, Michigan, Oregon, and in a bit of a surprise, Arizona.

Limar was recently on Notre Dame’s campus for the annual Blue-Gold game.  Notre Dame will be hoping to land the commitment, especially after running back [autotag]Sedrick Irvin, Jr.[/autotag]’s decommitment from the class last week.

Notre Dame loses commitment from running back Sedrick Irvin Jr.

Tough break for the Irish.

It never is easy to lose a commit from a skill position, but it happens. If you’re Notre Dame, it especially hurts to know that you’ve lost a running back at a time when [autotag]Kyren Williams[/autotag] just turned pro. That running back is Sedrick Irvin Jr., who tweeted that the time has come to explore his options once again:

Irvin committed to the Irish in September, though it isn’t clear if Brian Kelly’s presence at the time had anything to do with it. On the flip side, [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] and [autotag]Deland McCullough[/autotag] haven’t left South Bend, so it’s doubtful they had anything to do with this new decision unless they and Irvin had some sort of falling out. Maybe he feels threatened by the possible addition of Jayden Limar in the same recruiting class?

Whatever the reason, it’s regrettable that the relationship between Irvin and the Irish didn’t work out, and we wish him well as he ponders where to go now.

Top 10 running back commits to Notre Dame

Notre Dame continues to strengthen the running back position with this big-time commitment

Notre Dame fans of a certain age are plenty familiar with the name Sedrick Irvin. Irvin played for Michigan State in the late 1990s and ran for over 100 yards in the two games he played and against the Irish (1997, 1998).

The good news is that Sedrick Irvin, Jr., a top-10 running back in the 2023 recruiting class, won’t be silencing the Notre Dame faithful when he puts up 100-yard performances in college because he has committed to Notre Dame.

Irvin chose Notre Dame over finalists Michigan State, Oregon, and Stanford in an announcement that aired on CBS Sports HQ.

247Sports ranks Irvin as a four-star prospect and the eighth overall running back in the 2023 class. They also rank him as the 177th best overall prospect nationwide.

Irvin will come to Notre Dame from Gulliver Prep in Miami where he averaged 6.8 yards per carry and scored six touchdowns as a sophomore last year. He’s run for a pair more scores and 275 yards in three games this fall (Maxpreps).

Irvin becomes the fifth commitment in Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class, all of which have a four or five star rating on 247Sports.
