Former New York Giants defensive end Romeo Okwara officially announced his retirement from football on Tuesday.

In an emotional post shared on Instagram, Okwara reflected on his eight seasons in the NFL and what the game has meant to him.

“After some introspection and meditation I have decided to step away from the NFL,” Okwara wrote. “The game of football has been the largest part of my life for the greater of 18 years, 8 of which I have been fortunate enough to play at the professional level. 4 of those with my brother.

“The experiences, friendships, and camaraderie I have been lucky enough to share with my teammates, coaches, and peers is something I will forever be grateful for. You all mean the world to me and I will continue to cheer you on for the rest of our lives!”

The Giants originally signed Okwara as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Notre Dame in 2016. He spent two seasons in East Rutherford before being waived in September of 2018.

Okwara was immediately claimed by the Detroit Lions, where he spent the past six seasons.

“(To the) Detroit Lions organization – THANK YOU for giving this young kid a chance 6 years ago after coming into the league as a Free Agent. My heart is forever with you and the city of Detroit,” he wrote. “I am excited for what’s next as I navigate this crazy transition away from the game.”

In 92 career games (32 starts), Okwara recorded 162 tackles (96 solo, 26 for a loss), six forced fumbles, six passes defensed, 58 QB hits and 25.0 sacks.

He finished the post by stating “I am excited for what’s next as I navigate this crazy transition from the game.”

The former Notre Dame defensive end came into the NFL in 2016 after being undrafted by signing with the New York Giants. After being on the roster for two seasons the Lions claimed him off waivers and he would spend the next six years with the team.

Okwara was not just talented enough to earn a seven-year career in the NFL but he survived roster changes and coaching staff overhauls. He would overcome two torn Achilles tendon injuries to play 16 games for the Lions in 2023 in which he would earn two sacks.

Ex-Lions OLB Julian Okwara signs with the Eagles

OLB Julian Okwara signs with the Philadelphia Eagles, ending his four seasons in Detroit

The days of the Detroit Lions featuring the Okwara brothers along the defensive line are officially over. Julian Okwara has signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Okwara was a third-round pick by the Lions in 2020 and has spent hte first four years of his career in Detroit. He joined older brother Romeo with the Lions but never established himself as more than a part-time player. His most productive season was his second one, with five sacks in 13 games and playing 40 percent of the snaps in 2021. He missed games due to various injuries in all four of his seasons.

Okwara was waived late in the 2023 season but returned to the Lions’ practice squad. Because he was not on an active roster at the end of the season, Okwara was free to sign anywhere.

With Julian now gone, the question for the Lions shifts to whether they will have either Okwara brother back in 2024. Romeo’s contract for 2024 officially voids on Friday.

Detroit Lions unrestricted free agents now that the 2023 season is completed

With the 2024 offseason looming, here is the master list of the Detroit Lions unrestricted free agents

The Detroit Lions had an impressive season, coming within one game of a Super Bowl berth despite their loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Looking ahead, the future seems promising for the Lions.

GM Brad Holmes and Coach Dan Campbell are likely already diligently evaluating the roster, identifying areas for improvement to overcome the challenges. From a personal perspective, they should have the trust of the fanbase to execute the necessary moves. As they enter the offseason, the Lions possess $58.6 million in cap space, ranking sixth in the NFL according to Over the Cap. This substantial amount will likely be essential to bolster the roster, especially with only 38 players currently under contract for the upcoming season.

Certain players demonstrated their value this season, earning a return to the roster, while others failed to meet expectations. The decisions on who to retain and who to release will be intriguing. Here’s the comprehensive list of the Lions’ unrestricted free agents.

Detroit Lions best and worst PFF grades from the playoff win over the Bucs

Let’s take a look at the best and worst PFF graded players for the Detroit Lions in their victorious encounter with the Buccaneers.

Following their triumph over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Detroit Lions are now on the cusp of glory, eyeing the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The victory was the result of a collective effort from all three phases, reflecting the Lions’ characteristic resilience in close matches. This team is built to adapt, with each phase compensating when one aspect takes a moment to find its rhythm. While key players delivered outstanding performances that propelled the Lions to victory, there were also areas where improvement is needed as they prepare to face San Francisco.

Let’s take a look at the best and worst PFF graded players for the Lions in their victorious encounter with the Buccaneers.

Notre Dame Football: 12 Former Golden Domers Remain in NFL Divisional Playoffs

Who do you like to advance to the NFL conference championships?

The NFL Divisional Playoffs are set and 12 former Notre Dame players are moving on to the second round.

Wild Card weekend saw one great game between the Lions and Rams and five other ones that left quite a bit to be desired.

As the NFL playoff field gets cut nearly in half, so do the amount of former Notre Dame players participating in the postseason.  The Irish saw 10 of their 22 former players on playoff teams eliminated this weekend.

So who is left and how did they fare on Wild Card weekend?

Three running backs the Detroit Lions could sign after cut day

Three running backs the Detroit Lions could sign after cut day from Lions Wire’s Russell Brown

One of the more surprising developments from the Detroit Lions roster after cut-day in the NFL is how lopsided their roster is. There’s a plethora of names on the defense but the offense doesn’t have enough players for a second team.

Something to note for Lions fans is that it’s not uncommon for a team to do this. Most of the time, it’s because an organization has their eyes on one or two offensive players that could contribute. For Detroit, that could be the case.

When you look at how their defensive line depth chart takes shape, they could still look to move a player or two and that would open up those roster spots on offense. On the defensive line, they could still be looking to trade either one of the Okwara brothers or they could look to move a player such as Benito Jones. Having seven edge rushers and five defensive tackles is surprising for an offense that could use another playmaker out of the backfield or at wide receiver.

After the Lions announced their 53-man roster, it was surprising to see that they only had two running backs (David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs) and a fullback (Jason Cabinda) listed on the depth chart. Last year, the Lions had four running backs on the roster and that didn’t include Cabinda.

However, two of the running backs on last years roster (Craig Reynolds and Jermar Jefferson) could make it to the practice squad and if they move a defensive player, one of them could make it back to the roster.

That said, could the Lions look to add one of the running backs that were cut this week as teams across the NFL trimmed their roster from 90 players to 53 players?

That’s what I envision the Detroit Lions doing. Now the question is who could they be prepared to add at the running back position? Here’s three running back the Lions could consider adding for their 53-man roster:

Zonovan “Bam” Knight

This will be a player that will be at the top of the list for plenty of teams in the NFL. That’s why it was surprising to see the New York Jets move on from Knight without trading him but maybe their asking price was too high. Either way, the Lions could very well be interested in the talented back who went undrafted out of N.C. State in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Last season as a rookie, Knight ran for 300 yards with a touchdown and he added 13 receptions for 100 yards. At 5’10” and 209 pounds, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds and he had a 3-cone drill time of 6.95 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The Lions are familiar with Knight as they limited him to only 23 yards on 13 carries last season during their week 15 battle. Prior to that game, Knight had averaged 77 rushing yards per game for the Jets. Regardless of his stat line versus the Lions, Knight showed his ability to be an effective pass-catcher while being able to run efficiently in a zone running scheme.

The most impressive stat for Knight is that he forced a broken tackle on 34% of his rushes last year and that was number one in the NFL. During training camp, reports came out of New York that Knight excels running behind a fullback and that he looked “like the best running back in camp.”

For Detroit, this would be a home run addition for what they do offensively and how it feels like they need to add a player to their backfield.

Tyler Badie

Badie is another one-year running back from the 2022 NFL Draft that has some potential. Now that’s simply based on the type of player he was for Missouri. One concern with Badie is that he’s searching for his third team in his second year and he’s only gotten one reception for 24 yards in his career.

The hope for a team like Detroit is that they’ve shown that they can tap into a player and pull some good from them. They’ve found ways to create competition and make the players on the roster better. Maybe they can tap into his 4.45 speed and find ways to get him the football. In his four years at Missouri, he averaged 5.3 yards per carry and he had 126 receptions.

We’ll see if the Lions spin the tires on this one but adding another player to their backfield seems likely. If they miss out on Knight and potentially other running backs, they could turn towards a player such as Badie.

John Kelly

On and off the Cleveland Browns practice squad the last two years, it’s hard to pinpoint what type of player John Kelly can be. One positive when looking at him is that Brad Holmes was with the Rams when Kelly got drafted in the 6th Round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

For Kelly, he’s been a part of some rosters that already have established running backs. With the Rams, he was behind Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown. With the Browns, he was behind Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. Coming to Detroit to back up David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs is probably less than ideal for a player that’s searching for an opportunity.

However, Detroit presents an opportunity for a third running back. Especially if that running back comes in and works hard. While Kelly isn’t a speedster with his 40-yard dash time of 4.62 seconds, he was a physical runner in college at Tennessee. He shook off tacklers on just about every run, and he showed good lateral ability when cutting in the open field.

While signing John Kelly might not be splashy, it could still be a good move for both parties. After all, Kelly is an Oak Park, Michigan native who could look for one last hurrah in his hometown.

Detroit Lions salary cap update after aggressive free agency moves

The Detroit Lions continue to make one impactful move after another, and with a couple of restructures, the Lions salary cap is looking good.

It has been one busy offseason for the Detroit Lions. More than most of us are accustomed to, especially in recent memory. General Manager Brad Holmes took talent acquisition to a whole level bringing one playmaker after another. What makes these moves so shrewd is, from the naked eye, they did not overpay for any of these acquisitions.

There is a lot to catch up on after our breakdown from the initial free agency wave, so we will go ahead and look at the latest moves the Lions made the past few days.

Holmes came in with a plan to take the Lions biggest weakness this past season, flipped it on its heels, and made it a force to be reckoned with the signing of Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. The exact cap details haven’t been released, but the Lions were able to sign him to a reasonable one-year, $8,500,000 deal.

Emmanuel Mosley, C.J. Moore, and Michael Badgley’s contract details were released, with Mosley counting $4,294,118 against the cap, Moore’s cap hit at $1,800,000, and Badgley sitting at $1,092,500 cap hit.

With no position to little, Holmes is bringing competition at long snapper signing veteran Jake McQuaide, who has a cap hit of $1,092,500.

To give the Lions extra wiggle room in the salary cap department, they worked out contract restructures with Romeo Okwara and Jack Fox. Okwara’s was a renegotiation versus a restructure, which freed up nearly $9 million in salary cap space, with a cap hit only at $5,647,059 showing how much he wants to be in Detroit. Fox’s restructure freed up $1.6 million and now only counts $1,965,000 towards the salary cap.

Before all the moves were made, the Lions sat at $18.4 million in cap space, but now they have increased it to nearly $22.4 million, according to Over the Cap. Also, they have increased their effective cap spending from $8.3 million to $14 million, giving them the extra breathing room to make depth signings and sign their rookie class.

The Lions have been very busy this offseason making one impactful move after another. They have brought in players who can contribute immediately while keeping players who played a vital role in the last year’s success while keeping the salary cap very manageable with effective contract negotiations. The Lions have put the league on notice that they are ready to compete with anyone and take the next leap forward to great and continued success.
